January 2013

Dear Readers,

First, let me start by wishing all of our readers a Happy and Prosperous New Year. On behalf of the entire Desh-Videsh team, I wish you all wonderful and exciting moments ahead in 2013.

We start this year with a look back at the many legends we lost in 2012. One of the most notable includes Ravi Shankar, whose music reached many hearts and souls around the world. He stayed true to tradition while also helping those not familiar with Indian classical music learn more about the sitar and our musical culture. To read more about Shankar and other notable legends, read this month’s lead article.

Congratulations are also in order for Sachin Tendulkar, who recently announced his retirement from the 50-over cricket
format. His 23-year career embodies the values of hard work and perseverance, and he is loved by cricket fans in India as well as here in the United States.

This year also marks the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, who was and is still known for his positive nature
and teachings. His life and teachings will be celebrated around the world in a series of celebrations throughout the year. To learn more about local celebrations, please check the Community News section.

Finally, as we look ahead to a new year, many of us try to get organized and plan not just for the year ahead, but also for the future. One of our own community member’s, Shahid Barry, discusses the importance of planning adequately for retirement. While we all enjoy living in the moment, there is no time like today to consider what life will be like tomorrow!

Here’s to a joyous 2013!
