Weekly devotion for the week of Aug 25, 2008

SOUTH ASIAN OUTREACH MINISTRY OF THE PRESBYTERY OF TROPICAL FLORIDA

Anger is one of the human emotions but we as civilized people should be able tocontrol our anger. The level of violence in our society shows that a lot of people are angry and they are not dealing with it. The Bible takes a realistic view of human anger. Anger is purely destructive, hurting not only to the angry person but others as well. Anger can make you physically sick and unhappy. The book of Proverbs has much to say about the foolishness of the hotheaded. Jesus taught us a prayer and in that prayer it says “ Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.                                            Matthew 6: 12

Wrath kills the foolish man, and envy slays the simpleminded one.                  Job 5: 2

A fool’s anger is quickly known, but a prudent man ignores insults.                  Proverbs 12:16

The discretion of a man defers his anger, and it is his glory to ignore a transgression.
                                                                                                                  Proverbs 19: 11

Make a friendship with an angry man, and with a furious man you shall not go, lest you learn his ways, and get a snare to your soul.                                                                         Proverbs 22: 24-25

Scornful men bring a city into a snare, but wise men turn away anger.              Proverbs 29: 8.

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and brawling and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you.                                                                                          Ephesians 4: 31-32

Jesus said, “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly father will also forgive you.
                                                                                                                  Matthew 6: 14

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
A soft answer turns away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger.
                                                                                                                  Proverbs 15: 1
                                                                                                                  Blessings

Weekly devotion of the week of Aug 18, 2008

SOUTH ASIAN OUTREACH MINISTRY OF THE PRESBYTERY OF TROPICAL FLORIDA

Christian fellowship is very important in today’s world. There is so much loneliness in the society. Everyone is busy doing their own things. We praise God that in the midst of the chaos in our world there is a powerful core of believers whose first, last and only love is the risen Christ. They might feel isolated because of cultural differences, but in every heart the same love for the Lord Jesus Christ burns brightly. This true love forms the basis of the triumphant church of Christ on earth. Those who really love Christ rise above all differences and are free from all forms of pettiness and narrow-mindedness. They no longer judge fellow Christians and Non Christians and enjoy the fellowship with other people.

Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching.                                                                  Hebrews 10: 24-25

If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well.                                                                                                      James 2: 8

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Share with God’s people who are in need. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another.   Romans: 10, 13, 15,16.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
Therefore, putting away lying,“ let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,” For we are members of one another.
                                                                                                                 Ephesians 4: 25
                                                                                                                 Blessings,

Weekly devotion for the week of August 11, 2008

SOUTH ASIAN OUTREACH MINISTRY OF THE PRESBYTERY OF TROPICAL FLORIDA

Hospitality, is an instruction from God. Hospitality is disappearing from our modern society. When we hear that somebody wants to visit us, we first think about the time, effort and expense it will require. True hospitality means to open your heart to the visitors and make them feel truly welcome. Being a warmhearted and generous host was highly valued in the times past. These days it is so different, we are afraid to talk to strangers, visitors, immigrants and anyone who looks different then us. This kind of attitude is also in our churches and then we complain about the membership. The new Testament shows that the first Christians placed high value on hospitality, even it is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The warmth of the early Christian Fellowship was one of the reasons that the new faith spread so rapidly. A kind word, a smile, and a handshake can do wonders to a stranger.

If a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not abuse him. But the stranger that dwells among you shall be to you like one born among you, and shall love him as yourself; for you were stranger in the land of Egypt.                                                                        Leviticus 19: 33

Jesus said, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame,  the blind. And you will be blessed, because they can not repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”                                       Luke 14: 12-14

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kind affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another, Distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.                                                                            Romans 12: 9, 10, 13

Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being  saved.                                                                                        Acts 2: 47

Jesus said, Truly I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to Me.”                                                                                                      Matthew 25: 40

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.                                                                                                                                     Romans 12: 13
                                                                                                                  Blessings,

Weekly devotion for the week of August 04, 2008

SOUTH ASIAN OUTREACH MINISTRY OF THE PRESBYTERY OF TROPICAL FLORIDA

When we have relationship with a person, we like to have fellowship with that person. Fellowship is a richer word than relationship because fellowship involves deep sharing, intimacy, a common purpose and a joy in one another’s company. The Bible says that Almighty God desires fellowship with what he has created. Each individual human being is called to fellowship with the One who made us all. When we have fellowship with God we enjoy talking to him in prayer, reading His Word and singing his praises. By having fellowship with Him we know that God dwells among us.

I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you shall be my people.          Leviticus 26: 12

Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call his name “Emmanuel” which means God with us.”                                                                           Matthew 1: 23

Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
                                                                                                                  Matthew 18: 20

Jesus said “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without me you can do nothing. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”                                                                                                          John 15: 4, 5, 10, 12

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
                                                                                                                1 John 1: 5, 6
                                                                                                                Blessings,
                                                                                                                Musarrat Nasir
