When most people hear “yoga,” “breathwork,” or “meditation,” they think of stretching, relaxing, or calming the mind. But yoga is far more than a physical workout.

Yoga is a spiritual science. Spiritual because it connects us with ourselves and something greater — whether that’s nature, the universe, or God. Science because, like any disciplined study, it involves observation, experimentation, repetition, and recording results. That’s exactly how yoga developed: its knowledge was memorized and passed from teacher to student for generations before it was finally written down 2,000 years ago in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
Yoga, breathing, and meditation are focusing strategies that help us understand our limits, expand our capabilities, and gain greater control over our responses. These tools are incredibly versatile — they can be used to deepen spiritual connection, sharpen mental clarity, or simply navigate life’s daily challenges. Because the truth is, none of us can control everything. Life will surprise us. People will surprise us. And in those moments, our ability to remain steady makes all the difference.

For example, I could put you in a state of panic right now. You’re probably thinking, Cute little you? Really? Well, let me show you. Up to the challenge? You have to follow my directions though. And as always, consult your physician before practicing and listen to your body!

Bring your head down and relax your gaze or close your eyes. Now, lower your chin and slowly exhale all the air out of your body, then hold it for as long as possible. The point of this exercise is to notice: where does the mind go? Does it panic and want to breathe immediately, or can you calmly tell yourself, I’m fine, I can breathe whenever I want to, and push a little further? When stress arises unexpectedly, the mind often fluctuates even more.

This is just one example of how pranayama — the yogic art of controlling the life force energy (the breath) — can train us to remain calm even in uncomfortable situations.

In the world we live in today, we can’t control what other people do or say — we can only control our response and do our best to be non-reactive. It’s like defensive driving versus aggressive driving, but with the mind.

Our mind is controlling everything. We don’t even have to focus on breathing most of the time, and that’s a parallel for how many of us move through life — going through the motions and feeling like we have no control. The homework for you — not just for today or next year, but for life — is to incorporate breathing practices that make you comfortable in a state of discomfort. Practice elongating the pauses between each breath. When you find comfort in the pause, you gain the ability to control the mind, rather than letting the mind — or a situation — control you.

Whenever I think about “back in the day,” I picture our ancestors working together to keep their communities alive — gathering fruit and crops, building fires, meditating, learning the land, caring for each other. Life was simpler (minus the occasional wild animal attack). Even medicine was simpler. People used their environment and lifestyle to heal themselves — now, everything is a quick fix.

Even just a few decades ago, life had less stress and distraction. Fast forward to now: I’m juggling home responsibilities, two businesses pulling me in a million directions, a social life, a fitness schedule, petting my cats, keeping up with a skincare routine… and probably more that I can’t even remember. It’s a lot. And stress like this makes you want the quick fix — the pill, the coffee, the shortcut — just to keep going. It has become a habit.

Years ago, I read that people with high-stress jobs who never slow down are more likely to have heart attacks on vacation. Their bodies are so used to operating under stress that they don’t know what to do when it’s gone. I haven’t been able to forget about it. I was recently reminded of it when I came across the word: okasātmyam.

Okasātmyam is a Sanskrit term from Ayurvedic texts, often used to describe how the body and mind gradually adapt to a place or environment — even if it’s not ideal.

“Okaḥ” (ओकः) = home, place, habitat
“Ātmyam” (आत्म्यम्) = assimilation, familiarity

Together, okasātmyam means: “the process by which we become used to our surroundings — physically, mentally, emotionally — even when they may not serve us.”

“When I reflected on my own life, I realized how many things I’ve gotten used to that probably aren’t great.” Maybe you’ll find the same in yours.

Take food, for example. Ayurveda teaches that certain food combinations — called viruddha ahara (विरुद्ध आहार) — are improper and disrupt digestion. A few examples:

Fruit + dairy (like yogurt parfaits)

Honey + heat (honey in hot tea)

Meat + dairy

Eggs + milk

Tomatoes + dairy (hello, tikka masala)

Ice-cold drinks with meals

As a vegan, a lot of these combinations don’t apply to me anymore — but giving up my daily Nespresso espresso with coconut water and ice? That one still feels like a dagger to the heart. And if you love a morning fruit yogurt bowl or scrambled eggs with a splash of milk, this might sting a little for you too.

Here’s the twist: okasātmyam says that with repetition, your body may adapt. Something technically harmful might not affect you — because you’ve grown used to it.

Acharya Charaka said:

“Satmyaṁ hi nāti vyāpatkaram” —
“That which is adapted to the body does not harm it severely.”

So… does that mean we should just keep living in survival mode? Eating combinations that aren’t good for us? Staying in environments that slowly chip away at us?

Honestly? I’m not sure there’s a perfect answer to this — because life is a lot more nuanced now.

The “right” answer probably lies somewhere in between. Yes, we should make changes — but flipping everything overnight isn’t sustainable. What we can do, though, is notice what we’ve adapted to. We can strengthen our digestion. Introduce more meaningful rest. Swap one harmful thing for something more nourishing. Not perfectly. Just more often.

This world is intense. But we’re not powerless in it.
It’s not about chasing perfection — just choosing with a little more intention.

And maybe that’s the new okasātmyam:
Learning to get used to what’s good for us again.

In Ayurveda, relationships are seen as more than just emotional or physical connections—they are energetic bonds influenced by the unique constitutions of both individuals. Ayurveda categorizes human nature into three primary doshas (biological energies): Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These doshas not only determine our physical traits but also shape our personalities, communication styles, and emotional needs in relationships.

Understanding your dosha and that of your partner can offer profound insights into compatibility, conflict resolution, and building a harmonious bond. Whether you are dating, engaged, or married, Ayurveda provides timeless wisdom on how to nurture a balanced and fulfilling partnership.

Each dosha brings unique strengths and challenges to relationships. Here’s how different dosha types behave in love, and how they can create balance together.

Every relationship faces challenges, but Ayurveda provides holistic remedies to bring harmony and balance.

For Emotional Imbalances:
Pitta anger → Cooling herbs (rose, fennel, chamomile tea).
Vata anxiety → Grounding oils (sesame oil massage).
Kapha lethargy → Movement & warming spices (ginger, cinnamon).

For Communication Issues:
Vata should slow down and express thoughts clearly.
Pitta should soften their tone and listen patiently.
Kapha should voice their needs instead of bottling emotions.

For Rekindling Romance:
Vata: Surprise dates, spontaneous getaways.
Pitta: Deep conversations, intellectual bonding.
Kapha: Affectionate gestures, cooking a meal together.

Ayurveda teaches that relationships are about balance—understanding our natural tendencies and how they interact with our partner’s energy. Instead of forcing change, we can nurture growth and harmony by honoring our doshas and supporting each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

By applying Ayurvedic wisdom to relationships, couples can cultivate lasting love, deep emotional connection, and a relationship that aligns with their higher purpose.

The Spiritual Journey of Marriage by Chahna Gupta Marriage is often celebrated as the union of two individuals, but in the Vedic tradition, it goes far beyond companionship and shared responsibilities. It is seen as a sacred journey—a partnership designed to foster self-discovery and fulfill one’s dharma (life purpose). Embracing this perspective elevates a relationship into one of growth, harmony, and deeper spiritual
connection.

In Vedic philosophy, marriage is not just a social contract but a union of two souls committed to supporting each other’s spiritual evolution. As co-pilgrims on life’s journey, couples help one another navigate challenges while striving toward higher goals. This partnership is grounded in three (technically four) key principles:

● Karma: Marriage often involves karmic ties from past lives, bringing lessons in forgiveness, compassion, and unconditional love.
● Artha and Kama: While marriage fulfills material and emotional needs, these pursuits are balanced with spiritual aspirations.
● Moksha: Partners can support each other’s path to liberation, aligning their actions with their highest selves.

Dharma, or life’s purpose, becomes a collective mission in marriage. Together, couples can:
● Support Growth: Encourage each other to overcome weaknesses and cultivate virtues.
● Serve the World: Combine strengths to contribute to family, community, and beyond.
● Raise Consciousness: Create a home rooted in mindfulness, spirituality, and love, uplifting everyone around them.

Vedic wedding rituals beautifully symbolize the spiritual foundation of marriage. The Saptapadi (Seven Steps), where couples take vows around a sacred fire, represents lifelong commitments to respect, prosperity, and spiritual alignment. Depending on the culture, many brides have a Mangalsutra, a necklace imbued with mantras, symbolizes unity and protection, serving as a reminder of their shared spiritual path.

Every journey has bumps, and marriage is no exception. According to Vedic teachings, challenges are opportunities for growth:
● Self-Reflection: Conflicts often reveal unresolved inner struggles, offering chances to heal.
● Communication as Sadhana: Mindful, open communication fosters understanding and deepens the bond.
● Resilience through Rituals: Practices like daily meditation, gratitude journaling, or prayers keep couples connected and grounded.

Even in today’s fast-paced world, Vedic principles can provide balance and purpose. Couples can:
● Begin their day with shared meditation to align energies.
● Practice mindful breathing, like Anulom Vilom, for calmness and harmony.
● End each day by expressing gratitude, strengthening their connection.
● Create a sacred space at home for prayer, reflection, or yoga, anchoring their shared spiritual journey.

Marriage, in the Vedic sense, is a profound collaboration that invites couples to grow together in love, self-awareness, and harmony. By fulfilling their dharma as a team, they transform their union into a sacred journey that not only enriches their lives but also uplifts the world around them.

This December, I spent a magical month in India, surrounded by family, traditions, and of course, food. One snack seemed to appear in every household I visited: makhana, or fox nuts. Gently roasted with a touch of salt and black pepper, this humble snack was presented with a detailed list of its benefits. “It’s great for weight loss,” one relative said. “It’s full of calcium for strong bones,” another added. For someone preparing for a wedding, I wondered—could this simple food be the secret weapon for brides and grooms?

Understanding Makhana’s Nutritional Appeal

Makhana has a reputation as a superfood, and its nutrient profile backs that up. These popped lotus seeds are low in calories, high in protein, and a rich source of fiber. This combination makes them ideal for managing hunger and maintaining energy levels—something every soon-to-be-married couple needs. Whether you’re squeezing in last-minute wedding errands or managing the stress of planning, makhana can help you stay fueled without reaching for unhealthy snacks.

It’s also a good source of calcium, which is essential for strong bones and teeth—critical for standing tall through those long ceremonies and smiling endlessly for photos. Makhana is also packed with antioxidants, which may help reduce inflammation and promote glowing skin. Its low glycemic index makes it a stable energy source, helping you avoid the sugar highs and lows that can derail your day.

Are the Benefits Real?

While traditional wisdom sings makhana’s praises, research supports many of these claims. Studies highlight its role in weight management, its antioxidant content, and its ability to provide sustained energy. However, experts also suggest moderation, as no single food can replace a balanced diet.

A Perfect Pre-Wedding Snack?

For brides and grooms, makhana is a light, guilt-free option that can fit into any diet. It’s portable, versatile, and nutrient-dense—perfect for those busy days leading up to your big moment. Whether it’s for a quick energy boost or a mindful snack, makhana is worth adding to your pre-wedding routine.

Happy New Year! May 2025 bring you blessings!

Taking place on January 11th, 2025 from 10 am to 3 pm, Life Market isn’t just an event—it’s an experience designed to bring balance, vitality, and joy, inspired by Ayurveda’s philosophy that true health and happiness come from harmony with oneself and one’s surroundings.

Inspired by Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, life—or “Ayur”—is a gift, an intricate balance of the mind, body, and spirit with the natural world. Ayurveda is about finding what balances you, and for every person, there is something unique they can find at Life Market. Life Market captures this spirit, offering activities and experiences that help nurture this balance. Through yoga, meditation, sound healing, and wellness practices, we invite everyone to take part in a journey of self-care, connection, and renewal under the warmth of the beautiful January sky.

Life Market is an opportunity to enjoy delicious food prepared by South Florida Hindu Temple, where each dish is crafted with care, tradition, and skill. By purchasing these wholesome meals, you’re supporting the temple and the continued success of this community-centered event.

Celebrate January’s Warmth with Wellness and Connection

Embrace South Florida’s mild January weather by immersing yourself in wellness activities outdoors. Yoga, meditation, and sound healing will be offered throughout the day, providing space to breathe, stretch, and center yourself in alignment with Ayurveda’s principles of holistic health. These practices, much like the market itself, foster an environment where we can collectively recharge and find balance.

Help Us Grow Life Market into a Regular Community Celebration

This gathering is just the beginning. Together, we can make Life Market a regular event that continues to celebrate Ayurveda, holistic wellness, and our vibrant community.
Happy October! If you’ve read my previous articles, then you know that I enjoy writing about Ayurveda. Ayurveda is such a deep science—it feels like you could study it for a lifetime and there would still be more to discover.

However, when I talk to others, one thing I hear often is that Ayurveda needs to be updated or that it’s no longer relevant. I respectfully disagree. While it’s true that our world has changed drastically since Ayurveda’s origins, the fundamental principles of this ancient science remain just as relevant today.

Ayurveda is rooted in balance—balance of the mind, body, and environment. Considering the global health challenges we face, such as stress, anxiety, and lifestyle-related diseases like diabetes and heart conditions, many of these issues stem from imbalance. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach to address these modern problems. It’s not about outdated methods or rigid rules; it’s about understanding your unique body type, or dosha, and living in harmony with nature. The wisdom of Ayurveda allows us to adapt its principles to our modern lifestyles while honoring the deep science behind it.

In fact, Ayurveda is much more than just herbal remedies or dietary advice. Did you know there are actually eight distinct branches of Ayurveda? These branches demonstrate the breadth and depth of the system, making it as comprehensive as any modern medical science. Here’s a brief overview:

Kaya Chikitsa (Internal Medicine): Treating diseases by balancing the body’s energies (doshas) through diet, herbs, and detoxification.

Shalya Tantra (Surgery): Ancient surgical techniques that also include modern aspects of invasive treatments.

Shalakya Tantra (ENT and Ophthalmology): Focusing on ailments of the head and neck, including eyes, ears, nose, and throat.

Bala Chikitsa/Kaumarabhritya (Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynecology): Caring for infants, children, and mothers during pregnancy.

Agada Tantra (Toxicology): Addressing poisons, toxins, and antidotes, including environmental and internal toxins.

Bhuta Vidya (Psychiatry and Spiritual Healing): Treating mental health and spiritual afflictions.

Rasayana (Rejuvenation and Geriatrics): Promoting longevity, vitality, and overall wellness through lifestyle, diet, and herbs.

Vajikarana (Aphrodisiac Therapy and Reproductive Health): Addressing fertility, vitality, and sexual health.

Just from this breakdown, it’s clear that Ayurveda is versatile and can address a wide range of issues. It remains relevant, not just in ancient times, but also in modern healthcare—whether through alternative, complementary, or integrative approaches. Ayurveda is timeless, and its principles still hold the key to addressing many of the issues we face today.

If you find this interesting and want to explore more, there’s an upcoming Ayurveda conference titled Ancient Wisdom, Modern Wellness, hosted by the Ayurveda Association of Florida and International Hindu University in Lauderhill, FL, on Sunday, October 27th. We’d love for you to join! For more information, visit flayurveda.com.

Vrikshayurveda, which translates to “the science of plant life,” is a traditional Indian approach to agriculture and horticulture that dates back thousands of years. Rooted in the same holistic principles as Ayurveda, Vrikshayurveda encompasses the care, growth, and preservation of plants and trees. It provides guidelines for soil preparation, planting, irrigation, pest control, and overall plant health using natural and sustainable methods.

In a world increasingly aware of sustainability and natural practices, the ancient Indian science of Vrikshayurveda offers valuable insights into the care and nurturing of plants and trees. While Ayurveda is widely recognized for its contributions to human health and wellness, Vrikshayurveda remains a lesser-known yet equally profound branch of this ancient wisdom.

Core Principles of Vrikshayurveda

Harmony with Nature:
Emphasizes working with natural cycles, including seasonal changes and species interdependence.

Soil Health:
Advocates using organic matter like compost, green manure, and natural fertilizers to enrich soil.

Natural Pest Management:
Utilizes natural methods such as neem oil and herbal concoctions to deter pests instead of synthetic pesticides.

Water Management:
Focuses on efficient water use, including rainwater harvesting and optimal watering times.

Plant Care and Healing:
Involves applying herbal pastes to tree wounds and using plant extracts to boost immunity and resilience.

Practices in Vrikshayurveda

Preparation of Panchagavya:

Panchagavya is a traditional bio-enhancer made from five products of the cow: milk, curd, ghee, urine, and dung. This mixture is fermented and used to enrich the soil, promote plant growth, and enhance resistance to pests and diseases.

Use of Herbal Decoctions:

Various herbal decoctions are used to strengthen plants and protect them from infections. For example, a mixture of neem leaves, turmeric, and garlic can be sprayed on plants to prevent fungal infections.

Mulching:

Applying a layer of organic material around the base of plants helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Common mulching materials include straw, leaves, and compost.

Sacred Groves:

In many Indian traditions, certain patches of forest are preserved as sacred groves. These groves are biodiversity hotspots and serve as reservoirs of medicinal plants. The protection of these areas is an integral part of Vrikshayurveda, ensuring the conservation of plant species and genetic diversity.

The timeless principles and wisdom of Vrikshayurveda are gaining renewed interest as people seek sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to modern agricultural practices. By embracing these ancient techniques, we can enhance soil fertility, promote biodiversity, reduce environmental impact, and ensure food security.

When we regulate our breathing patterns through pranayama, we can influence our emotional state and gain control over the mind instead of allowing our mind to control our feelings, mood, and actions and makes us less reactive and more reflective and purposeful with our moves. Here’s how incorporating simple breathing exercises can help alleviate stress as you approach your big day.

Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

This technique is excellent for restoring balance and calming the mind. Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight. Place your right thumb over your right nostril and inhale deeply through the left nostril. At the peak of your inhalation, close off the left nostril with your ring finger, then exhale through the right nostril. Continue this pattern, alternating nostrils after each inhalation. Nadi Shodhana helps harmonize the two hemispheres of the brain, promoting clarity and peace.

Bhramari (Bee Breathing)

Bhramari is known for its immediate soothing effects on the mind, perfect for relieving pre-wedding jitters. Close your eyes and deep breathe in. As you exhale, gently press your fingers onto your ears and make a loud humming sound like a bee. The vibration of the humming can help calm your thoughts and ease anxiety.

Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath)

This energizing breath can be used to clear the mind and invigorate the body when wedding fatigue sets in. Sit with your spine erect and take a few deep breaths. Then, forcefully expel the breath from your lungs using quick contractions of your lower belly. Focus on the exhalation; the inhalation should happen passively. Kapalabhati is great for refreshing your mind and awakening your senses.

By spending just a few minutes each day practicing these pranayama techniques, you can significantly reduce stress levels, enhance your focus, and maintain your calm. Embrace these breaths of peace as you prepare for a memorable day ahead, ensuring you stay present and joyful throughout the celebration and also allow you to help guide others that may be stressed and anxious during this time. Wishing you a beautiful wedding season filled with love, good vibes, and ease!
