Monank Patel has been appointed captain of the USA cricket team for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, set to take place in India and Sri Lanka. Ten key players from the team’s debut 2024 campaign, which featured a notable Super 8 stage finish and a win over Pakistan, will return for this edition.

Alongside Patel, the squad includes Jessy Singh, Andries Gous, Milind Kumar, Shayan Jahangir, Harmeet Singh, Nosthush Kenjige, Shadley Van Schalkwyk, Saurabh Netravalkar, and Ali Khan. The experience of players like Harmeet, Milind, and Saurabh, who have played age-group or state cricket in India, is expected to provide the team with a strategic advantage.

Wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous led the USA in runs during the 2024 edition with 219 runs from six innings at an average of 43.80, including two fifties, while Saurabh Netravalkar topped the team’s wicket-taking chart with six wickets at an average of 20.83.

New faces in the squad may include Shubham Ranjane, who could make his T20I debut, and Mohammad Mohsin and Shehan Jayasuriya, who may earn their first international caps. Shubham, born in Pune, previously played four ODIs for the USA and featured in the SA20 tournament for Johannesburg Super Kings, scoring 101 runs in five innings, including a half-century.

USA will play in Group A alongside India, Pakistan, the Netherlands, and Namibia. Their campaign begins on February 7 against India in Mumbai, followed by matches against Pakistan in Colombo on February 10, the Netherlands in Chennai on February 13, and Namibia in Chennai on February 15.

Not long ago, Indian women’s cricket existed in near anonymity. Matches were played in second-tier venues, press conferences attracted only a handful of reporters, and even international games often went untelevised. In 2018, when India toured South Africa, there was no live broadcast of their ODIs—the only updates came via scorecards on social media. When journalists protested, a live stream was hurriedly arranged, but the message was clear: women’s cricket was still an afterthought.

Back then, Snehal Pradhan, a former cricketer and now ICC manager for women’s cricket, famously tweeted an appeal asking for 22 more followers to help the BCCI Women’s Twitter account reach 1,000 followers. That account now boasts over a million—a reflection of how far the game has come. And nothing symbolizes that transformation more powerfully than what happened on November 2, 2025.

The Final: A Tale of Grit and Grace

The final was more than a cricket match; it was an emotional rollercoaster that kept 39,555 fans at the stadium and millions watching across the globe on the edge of their seats. India’s 298 for 7 against South Africa was the second-highest total ever scored in a Women’s World Cup final. Shafali Verma, just 21 years old, lit up the night with a blistering 87 off 78 balls, while Deepti Sharma delivered an all-round masterclass—a run-a-ball fifty followed by five wickets for 39 runs.

Deepti’s feat was historic: she became the first player, male or female, to score a fifty and take a five-wicket haul in a World Cup knockout match. Her 22 wickets in the tournament placed her among the greatest all-rounders in women’s cricket history.

When South Africa began their chase, led by their prolific captain Laura Wolvaardt, tension filled the air. Wolvaardt’s majestic 101 nearly threatened to rewrite the script, but once she fell to Deepti’s clever variation, India’s destiny seemed written. The roar that followed the final wicket—caught by Harmanpreet herself—was not just for a game won, but for a generation redeemed.

The Captain Who Dreamed Beyond Limits

As the crowd erupted, Harmanpreet Kaur—India’s captain, trailblazer, and emotional anchor—stood motionless for a moment, absorbing the surreal sight. In the post-match press conference, she confessed, “I’m numb. I can’t even express what I’m feeling. There were so many ups and downs, but through everything, we had self-belief.”

Self-belief—that was the word she repeated over and over, because it was this quiet conviction that had carried the team through the storms of the past month. After early losses to Australia, South Africa, and England, India’s campaign seemed doomed. But a turning point came after their defeat to England. The sight of Jemimah Rodrigues and Radha Yadav hugging South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp after the match went viral. “Sabki victory hai—this is everyone’s victory,” smiled Mandhana as she congratulated journalists who had supported the team for years. The victory meant more because of where they started. For years, India’s women cricketers played without media attention, training facilities, or fair pay. Even the 2013 Women’s World Cup in India was held in small club grounds, overshadowed by domestic men’s matches. Players like Mithali and Jhulan often had to buy their own gear and play in front of near-empty stands.

Equal pay was once a distant dream. Until 2022, women cricketers earned only a fraction of what their male counterparts made—both in match fees and annual contracts. Though recent reforms have introduced parity in match fees, a clear gap still remains in contracts. The highest women’s annual contract, valued at around $60,000, is still below the men’s lowest contract grade of $120,000. Yet these remarkable players continued to give their all—not for financial gain, but for the love of the game, their passion, and the pride of representing their nation.

The Role of the Women’s Premier League

The launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023 changed everything. For years, officials dismissed the idea, claiming there wasn’t enough talent or financial viability. Sir Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937. His grandmother raised him after his parents separated when he was young. Despite the privileged upbringing, Tata showed a tremendous sense of responsibility. He studied at the best institutions, where he received a degree in architecture and structural engineering from Cornell University in 1962 and the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1975.

In 1962, Tata joined Tata Steel as a shop floor worker among laborers. He learned at the grassroots level and, therefore, was humble and had a deep understanding of the business’s core mechanics. JRD Tata mentored him, and in 1991 he succeeded the latter as the chairman of Tata Sons. Although his appointment was met with skepticism at first, Tata proved to be an innovative and ethical leader who justified and silenced everyone by streamlining the group through economic liberalization and globalization.

Industrial Leadership

Under Tata’s leadership, the Tata Group achieved milestones in its business journey, thereby establishing itself as one of the largest conglomerates in India. Born into the world of rhythm and excellent music, as the son of a legendary tabla maestro, Alla Rakha, Hussain started his training in tablas when he was very young under his father’s guidance.

As an artist, Hussain received numerous honors. His efforts paid off as he earned global recognition, winning four Grammy Awards and receiving seven nominations—an incredible achievement that cemented his status as a world music icon. In the U.S., he was conferred the National Heritage Fellowship Award, which is the best award bestowed on traditional U.S. artists.

Hussain’s fame was not merely a thing of awards. His reputation as a tabla player was iconic, as The Guardian described him as the most recognizable exponent of the tabla. The New York Times compared the speed of the fingers to the wings of a hummingbird, highlighting that he played with precision fluidity. His performances were not simply concerts but rhythmic journeys in the Indian genre of classical music, blending in with smooth jazz and world music, rendering a universal appeal.

One of the most important chapters in Hussain’s career was with the world music supergroup Tabla Beat Science, which he founded along with Bill Laswell. He infused Indian classical music with diverse global genres, revitalizing the traditional rhythms and extending his influence far beyond India. His musical explorations extended beyond the realm of world music. He has worked as an associate music director for the Merchant Ivory film Heat and Dust, released in 1983, to name but a few.

Beyond performing, Hussain was a devoted teacher and a passionate advocate for the preservation of Indian classical music. He taught at distinguished institutions such as Princeton and Stanford universities, sharing his passion and knowledge with the next generation of musicians. In recognition of his contributions to music education, the University of Mumbai awarded him an honorary Doctor of Law degree in 2022.

Hussain’s personal life was as culturally rich as his work. He married Antonia Minnecola, a Kathak dancer and teacher, who also handled his career. They have two daughters, Anisa and Isabella, who have pursued creative careers. Anisa is a filmmaker, and Isabella is a dancer in Manhattan. His brothers, Taufiq and Fazal Qureshi, are also accomplished percussionists who continue the family legacy of musical excellence.

The quality of his instruments spoke well of Hussain’s dedication to his craft. His tablas were handcrafted by master tabla maker Haridas Vhatkar, whom he had worked with for more than 18 years. He refrained from performing at private gatherings or corporate events, preferring to focus solely on the music.

Hussain collaborated with artists from around the world, cutting across genres and continents. He frequently performed at the International Jazz Day concerts, including the one in 2016 held by President Obama. He collaborated with artists such as Béla Fleck and Edgar Meyer, pushing the limits of what the tabla could do by incorporating traditional rhythms into jazz, bluegrass, and other genres.

In 2024, Hussain won three Grammy Awards for his work with the fusion band Shakti for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. This was just one of the many triumphs in a career spanning decades and influencing musicians across genres.

Hussain’s legacy also lies not just in the various awards he received but also in the fact that he took Indian classical music out into the world arena, so much so that John McLaughlin called him “the King, whose hands rhythm became magic,” while Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed him as “the true genius who changed and transformed the world of Indian classical music.”

Zakir Hussain died on December 15, 2024, at the age of 73, but still, his legacy inspires music makers all over the globe. His influence persists, ensuring that his mastery of the tabla and significant contributions to music worldwide will endure.

I get asked this question a lot.  I’ll be honest. Neither candidate in my opinion did a great job of addressing immigration so far.  It is obviously a very challenging issue to discuss.  If I were to guess, more of the U.S. likely feels that the Biden-Harris Administration has done a poor job at securing the Southern Border.   At the same time, most of the U.S. likely feels that former President Trump has not been particularly welcome to immigrants in his rhetoric.  One side is accused of being “anti-immigrant” and the other side is accused of “letting everyone in”.   The answer depends on who you ask.

As an immigration attorney who focuses on employment-based immigration (EB Immigration), this is where I think both candidates have lost an opportunity to make a difference and sway voters.   Talk more about employment-based immigration and investment-based immigration.  The largest group of voters who are interested in work visas and employment green cards are South and East Asians.  The party who can make inroads into this demographic will benefit.  Again, talk is cheap.   President Biden has had lots of Presidential Proclamations that talk about STEM and these STEM initiatives.  However, the USCIS, an agency of the Executive Branch, has not shown that they pay very little attention to these proclamations.

If I was either candidate, I would discuss how beneficial employment-based immigration is to the United States.   1) When we have critical labor shortages we often need both skilled and unskilled foreign workers to come into the U.S. and work in under-filled jobs.  2)  On the more exceptional side, they should discuss how scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, inventors, and other innovators can make a huge difference to our economy and country’s growth.

Trump or Harris should talk about “unicorns”.  What are unicorns?   A unicorn is a privately-held startup company valued at a billion dollars or more.  That is a billion with a B!   According to Forbes, immigrants have founded more than half (55%) of our nation’s unicorns. Almost 80% have an immigrant founder or an immigrant in a key leadership role.  When there is a pilot shortage, a nursing shortage, a trucking shortage, a mechanics shortage, or a teaching shortage is where employment-based immigration should be in the forefront of political discussions.

U.S. Universities (at least for now) attract the best and the brightest international students from all over the world.   Many of these bright young minds want to eventually settle here, get jobs, and start companies after studying in the States.  We need more H-1B visas to be available and other new or expanded work visas categories to be created to keep these students employed here after graduation.   OPT, CPT, and STEM OPT are wonderful programs.  However, they only last 1-3 years.  What will a graduate do to remain living and working in the U.S. if they can’t get one of the available visas?

International students are often forced to get additional expensive degrees, often ones they don’t even need, just to remain in the U.S. and get additional work authorization.   Some students even pay to attend marginal programs or ones that aren’t even accredited just for the chance at Day 1 CPT.   Many of these mostly private schools are benefiting from the lack of available work visas and green card opportunities for international students.  So the schools are perfectly satisfied with the current system.   However, are the students really benefiting?  Is our country really benefiting?

I represent companies in addition to talented individuals.  Some of my corporate clients wish they had better options to keep their valuable international students graduates for more than just a year or 2.   Yes some can win the H-1B lottery but most won’t.  Many would sponsor the students directly for green cards but the PERM process (labor certification) takes many years and is often unpredictable.  Additionally, Indian nationals, some of the best and brightest international students we have, face incredibly long visa-bulletin waits just to get a green card once the rest of the USCIS obstacles are overcome. If I were a politician, I would promote a quicker and more streamlined process for work visas and eventual green cards for these valuable employees.

What could be done?

1.  Make more H-1B visas available
2.  Create other types of work-visa categories
3.  Speed up USCIS processing times outside of Premium Processing (which often creates other roadblocks such as increased Requests for Evidence)
4. Speed up the PERM process for labor certification in sponsorship
5. Create more immigrant visas available on the employment-side so that the visa backlog for EB-2 and EB-3 cases are more acceptable.

While I am not trying to be political or show any support to a particular candidate, I do feel that it would be in everyone’s best interest to cover immigration on the employment side.    Interestingly, when I discuss my line of work to people of all political persuasions, the vast majority not only don’t object but actually support what I do.  It is refreshing to hear the support.  Now we just need more of it from our politicians.

People widely celebrate Rabindranath Tagore, a towering figure in literature and the arts, especially on his birth anniversary on May 7. Born on May 7, 1861, Tagore was not only a seminal figure in Indian culture but also a beacon of intellectual and artistic achievement globally.
