More than 600,000 knee replacements are performed the United States yearly. These include patients that have spent years skiing, running marathons, walking golf courses or just suffering from chronic arthritis. Many of these surgeries can be avoided by alternatively undergoing a minimally invasive state-of-the-art stem cell procedure.

Stem cells are the master cells of your body that have the ability to morph or configure themselves into any healthy, specialized cell type to regenerate and reproduce healthy cells that actually heal. As we age, the number of stem cells our body produces decreases. As a result, the body is unable to keep up with the repair demand.

These stem cells are an injury’s “first responders.” Under normal conditions, they release a variety of healing factors that stimulate bone, skin and cartilage regeneration. Umbilical cord stem cell therapy simply provides your body with a targeted, non-invasive solution increasing regeneration capacity for a variety of debilitating conditions.

How Does Stem Cell Therapy Work?

Our bodies have naturally occurring growth chemicals that program stem cells to integrate with the body’s existing cells to produce specialized tissue, ligament, tendon or cartilage as they repair damage in the targeted joint. This healing process begins when stem cells are transplanted and arrive (either through migration or direct injection) at the injured part of the body being targeted for tissue regeneration. Because stem cell healing is a natural process, a non-invasive procedure to inject a sufficient number of stem cells is done to focus on the damaged area.

Patients are typically able to return to normal activity after the procedure. Common side effects may include minor pain at the injection site, mild fever, mild headache or a low-grade fever. Some patients experience slight swelling or a feeling of fullness in the area around the transplant site, but this subsides within a few hours as the body moves fluids in its normal ways.

Researchers believe that stem cell therapy for the knee works by:

Developing into essential cartilage cells

Reducing the inflammation that can worsen arthritis

Releasing proteins called cytokines that slow degeneration of cartilage and reduce pain

What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine is the amazing process of replacing damaged or injured cells with healthy, life- renewing cells and tissues that restore function and vitality. The key component to regenerative medicine is umbilical cord sourced stem cell therapy.

Over a million joint replacement surgeries are performed each year in the United States. These are often performed at the end of a long chain of painkillers, physical therapy, lubricating injections … and finally surgery. While these treatments can mask the symptoms or slow the degenerative progression, they are not able to actually heal or correct the underlying problem.

Stem cells can be easily administered to problematic areas via injection. This procedure involves injecting the stem cells and a supporting fluid directly into an affected joint.

Side Effects

You will have little to no downtime and will be able to walk out of the office the same day on your own. Stem cell treatment for knees is noninvasive and rarely painful. Side effects are minimal. The most frequent experiences after the procedure include mild pain at the injection site, swelling, and some joint stiffness.

So if your doctor recommends a knee replacement, choose a different path. Avoid surgery, the long recovery, limited activity, and get back to living your life well!

Drink Water : Water is part of every metabolic process in the body, and adequate water intake also helps keep the balance of body salts normal. I recommend drinking ½ of your body weight in ounces. The best way to tell if your water intake is adequate is to check the color of your urine. Pale yellow is the goal. If it’s any darker than that, drink a glass of water or two.

Juicing Cleanse : Try a two-day juice cleanse to cleanse your kidney and liver. I recommend freshly juiced 1 part lemon, 2 parts grapefruit, 2 parts orange, and distilled water. Drink 1 gallon of this daily for 2 days along with 1 gallon of distilled water per day. You can purchase this already made at some juiceries for about $20 per gallon. Typically, patients will lose 5-7 pounds in those two days and will be able to keep this off if you continue with a healthy diet.

Exercise: Skin is the body’s largest organ, and sweating helps you eliminate excess body salts and other metabolites of body processes. Breaking a sweat every day is a good way to support your body’s healthy elimination of metabolic breakdown products. I recommend 30 minutes of exercise per day with a mix of Interval cardio and weights.

Sleep: Sleep is the time our body gets to repair, rebuild, and restore in every way. Create a bedtime ritual of seven hours on average of sleep per night. Avoid using your cell phone or computer for two hours before your bedtime. Recent studies continue to support the connection between amount of sleep and cognitive function.

Limit Caffeine: Caffeine can be a boost for mental focus and energy, if limited to less than 300 milligrams per day. A large mug of coffee has about 150 milligrams of caffeine, so that’s about two servings a day. A mug of tea is around 50 milligrams, so that’s about six servings. When it comes to caffeine, the less often it is consumed, the more of a positive biological effect you can expect.

Stop Eating Sugar: Cut out sugary drinks, snacks, and treats, and you’ll be surprised how fruit will satisfy your sweet tooth. Cutting down the sugar is important for detox. Your body is tired and consuming sugar will force your body to work to produce more insulin. So, give your body some rest by lowering the amount of sugar you eat. Good Alternatives for sugar are Monk Fruit and Coconut Sugar, as they are lower in the glycemic index.

Eliminate processed and prepared foods:
As a general rule, don’t consume things that come in cans, boxes, bags or jars. Cutting out processed foods is the quickest and easiest way to limit excess (and often hidden) sugars, fats, and calories.

Try a NAD Nutritional IV: NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a metabolic co-enzyme which is responsible for the structure, repair, and restoration of every cell. These enzymes are in constant demand by the body due to their demand by every cell and need to be replenished. The continuous need for replenishment of metabolic enzymes requires energy. NAD offers nutritionally based and medically supervised support for people suffering from chronic fatigue, immune deficiency, mood disorders, chronic stress, chronic illness, depression, anxiety and addiction. NAD helps make more energy adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and to minimize withdrawals from addictive substances and restore the brain function so one can focus on recovery and reaching optimal health. NAD IV Infusions take about 1 hour and are an excellent start to New Year goals.

Try the Ketogenic Diet: The Ketogenic diet is a very low carb, moderate protein, high healthy fat plan that puts your body into a metabolic state referred to as ketosis. In lieu of a high amount of carbohydrates in your diet, the body becomes very efficient at burning fat by breaking it down into ketones.

Avoid alcohol: Alcohol is not a health food, although some health benefits have been associated with moderate intake (that’s a maximum of one serving for women and two for men daily). Alcohol is also a diuretic, which can be dehydrating. And it’s a double diet whammy, bringing both the extra calories and the lowering of mental focus to say no to higher-calorie foods.

How we look, how much energy we have, even how we smell. So, what does the food you eat have to do with how your brain functions? It matters a lot! Especially for teenagers. Teen brains need real food!

When we’re stressed out, our bodies release inflammatory cytokines. These little chemicals prompt the immune system to kick in and fight back against the stress through inflammation, as though stress is an infection. It’s been linked to issues like thyroid issues, anxiety, weight gain, allergies, high blood pressure and more.

But what does this all have to do with food? Our gut helps keep our body’s immune responses and inflammation under control. Additionally, gut hormones that enter the brain or are produced in the brain influence cognitive ability, like understanding and processing new information, staying focused on the task at hand and recognizing when we’re full.

The mind begins to experience itself without being overshadowed by anxious thoughts. Clear your head of worries. Start focusing on the in-and-out cycle of breathing, for just a few minutes a day or when you’re lying in bed at night. It will help slow your heart rate and relax your muscles, too.

What are the Top 3 Allergies in Georgia and what can I do to prepare myself for Allergy Season?

The top 3 fall allergies in Georgia are Ragweed, Outdoor Molds, and Goldenrod. Ragweed grows abundantly throughout the South, North, and Midwest, and its lightweight pollen grains can travel up to 400 miles in the wind. Outdoor molds are another cause of fall allergies. They first appear in early spring, but thrive until the first frost. They are common in soil, compost piles, and in the leaves that cover the ground during the fall. Goldenrod blooms at the same time that ragweed does and does bring on many allergy symptoms: itchy eyes, joint pain, stuffiness, etc.

Some allergy precautions you can take are:

Use a face mask when you are outside, especially between 5 and 10 a.m. and on windy days.

Remove pollen from your skin and hair by showering frequently.

Keep your windows closed and turn on the air conditioner.

Eat a diet high in green vegetables.

Take an Antioxidant vitamin and 1,000 iu of Vitamin C daily.

Build up your immune system with a monthly Nutritional IV Infusion.

If you rake leaves in the fall, wear a face mask.

When you first turn on your car air conditioner, leave your windows open and avoid breathing the air for several minutes until mold spores can disperse.

Most importantly, get tested for allergies with a simple scratch test. If you have allergies, immunotherapy can be created to rid your allergies. Most insurance plans cover testing and creation of the immunotherapy. Call my office to learn more.

What is the best way to Detox?

I recommend the 2 day Arden’s Garden juice detox. It contains fresh grapefruit, orange, and lemon juices. I recommend to do this detox once monthly. They have a few locations in Georgia and also are sold in most Whole Foods stores.

Can Resistant starches be reheated to be able to digest as a fiber?

Yes, new studies suggest that resistant starches may be reheated after cooled for at least 30 minutes.

What are the biggest signs of a Gluten Intolerance?

The biggest signs of gluten intolerance are: joint pain, auto-immune conditions like Hashimoto, Hypothyroid, Lupus, and Rheumatoid Arthritis, gas/bloating, constipation, and eczema. Intolerances can be tested through blood and is offered in our office. Please call my office if you are interested in scheduling a blood test.

What are substitutes for Sodas and Coffee?

Some substitutes for sodas and coffee are: Le Croix sparkling water, green tea, other flavored herbal teas, matcha powder with coconut milk, fresh squeezed green juices.

Did you know that more than 41 million women in America have heart disease? And the most interesting thing is that more women than men will die from it. In fact, it’s the leading cause of death in women today. But by following these 10 healthy steps, you can avoid a heart attack by 92%.

Step 1: Drink Green Tea
This beverage contains several powerful antioxidants that lowers cholesterol and may even lower blood pressure. I recommend drinking 2-3 cups of Organic Green Tea or 1 cup of hot water with 1 teaspoon of Organic Matcha Green Tea- Ceremonial Powder.

Step 2: Scan Food Labels For Saturated Fat
Limit saturated fat intake to 7% of your total calories (for a 1,600-calorie diet, that’s about 12 g a day). And avoid trans fats whenever possible. They should only comprise of 1% of your daily calories, or less than 2 g a day.

Step 3: Sleep at least 7.5 hours Per Night
When you are sleep deprived, your body releases stress hormones that constrict arteries and cause inflammation. If you routinely wake up feeling tired or need an afternoon nap, then you’re probably sleep deprived. Most adults need 7 to 8 hours a night to function optimally.

Step 4: Eat Raw Nuts
Studies have found that those who eat at least 1 handful of raw unsalted nuts daily are 1/3 less likely to have either heart disease or a heart attack. Just do not overdo it—nuts are high in fat and calories, which can pack on pounds if overeaten.

Step 5: Walk 30 Minutes Per Day
Just 2.5 hours of exercise a week could reduce heart attacks by one-third and prevent 285,000 deaths from heart disease in the United States alone.

Step 6: Reduce Stress Levels by Meditating
Meditate for at least 5 minutes per day. Practicing a form of meditation in which you focus awareness on the present moment can reduce the effects of daily stressors. Ride out a stress storm by simply closing your eyes and quietly focusing on your breathing for 5 to 10 minutes.

Step 7: Take Fish oil and Vitamin D
Many studies suggest Omega-3 fatty acids stabilize the heart’s electrical system, lower blood pressure and triglycerides, slow arterial plaque buildup, and ease systemic inflammation. Also, Fish oil was more successful than statins at preventing death in heart failure patients, according to an Italian study.

Recent studies also show that too-little amounts of Vitamin D can raise the risk of peripheral arterial disease by 80% and increase the odds of developing diabetes (a known heart disease risk factor). I recommend taking 1,000 iu of Vitamin D3 daily.

Step 8: Eat Garlic
One of India’s wonder plants, garlic has a host of medicinal properties that make it a truly miraculous herb. Studies have found that a single clove of garlic consumed every day can help to reduce the production of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol, raise the production of ‘good’ HDL cholesterol and also keep blood pressure within normal limits.

Step 9: Include These Herbs into Your Diet
Cayenne (Lal Mirch)
This spice contains a substance called capsaicin that has been shown to improve the elasticity of the blood vessels, helping them stay healthy. More importantly, it reduces the chances of blood clot formation and also lowers levels of LDL cholesterol. Overall, cayenne improves the functioning of the cardiovascular system and keeps blood pressure within the normal range.

ArjunaBark (Kaugach)
The bark of the Arjuna tree contains several important chemical constituents such as tannins, triterpenoid saponins and flavonoids and these have been found to have a cardio-protective action. According to Ayurveda, Arjuna is said to be a strong cardiotonic drug. Now, researchers have found that the extracts from the Arjuna bark can perform the same function as nitroglycerine during an heart attack. Apart from that it also help to lower LDL cholesterol, raise HDL cholesterol and reduces blood pressure.

Step 10: Laugh at yourself
When researchers tested the “humor quotient” of 300 people, they found that those with heart disease were 40% less likely to laugh at the gaffes, mix-ups, and irritations of everyday life than those without cardiovascular problems.

Laughter is no substitute for eating properly, exercising, and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels with medication if need be, but enjoying a few laughs every day may help your heart health.

Don’t get me wrong, as a Naturopathic Doctor, I was taught that all carbohydrates should be avoided at all costs. However, new studies suggest that Resistant Starches are the New Power Fiber! Although this may be the first time you’ve heard of the phrase resistant starches, it is very likely to have been part of your diet for most of your life.

                                                            What is a Resistant Starch?
A resistant starch is a type of dietary fiber naturally found in many carbohydrate-rich foods such as potatoes, grains, and corn, particularly when cooled. It’s name comes from it being able to “resists” digestion in the body. And, what makes resistant starch so special is the powerful impact it has on weight loss and overall health.
In cooked starchy foods, resistant starch is created during cooling. Cooking triggers starch to absorb water and expand. As these portions of the starch become crystallized, the form it becomes then resists digestion. Cooling either at room temperature or in the refrigerator will raise resistant starch levels. Just remember don’t reheat!

There Are 4 Different Types of Resistant Starch
• Type 1: found in grains, seeds and legumes resists digestion because it is bound within the fibrous cell walls.
• Type 2: found in some starchy foods, including raw potatoes and green (unripe) bananas.
• Type 3: is formed when certain starchy foods, including potatoes and rice, are cooked and then cooled.
• Type 4: is man-made and formed via a chemical process.

Benefits of Adding Resistant Starches into your Diet:
You will burn more calories faster. Unlike some types of fiber, resistant starches get digested when it reaches the large intestine. This process creates beneficial fatty acids, including one called butyrate, which may block the body’s ability to burn carbohydrates. One study found that replacing just 5.4% of total carbohydrate intake with resistant starch created a 20 to 30% increase in fat burning after a meal.

It shuts down hunger hormones. Animal studies have found that resistant starches prompt the body to pump out more satiety-inducing hormones. A meal with resistant starches trigger a hormonal response to shut off hunger, so you eat less.

It can prevent cancer. Research shows that the butyrate created by resistant starch may protect the lining of the colon, making it less vulnerable to the DNA damage that triggers diseases, such as colon cancer.

It may fight diabetes and heart disease. Like other fibers, resistant starch helps control blood sugar levels. Blood sugar control translates into more energy and sustained energy. It also means long-term heart protection, because chronic high levels of blood sugar and insulin cause delicate arteries to become clogged and harden.

It boosts your immune system Resistant starches may boost the growth of probiotics; the same kind of healthy bacteria found in yogurt that keep bad bacteria in check.

How Much Resistant Starches should you add To your Diet:
Adding just 1/2 to 1 cup of cooled resistant starch-rich food per day can do the trick. But remember to Keep it cool and Do not Reheat!

RESISTANT STARCH RECIPES:
TRY: White or Sweet Potatoes
RESISTANT STARCH: 1/2 cup

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when a person’s body doesn’t make enough of the hormone insulin or can’t use insulin properly. There are 2 types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when your body’s pancreas doesn’t produce any insulin. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas either doesn’t produce enough insulin or your body’s cells ignore the insulin. Between 90% and 95% of people who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes in the South Asian Community
Type 2 diabetes is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the South Asian Community. While all ethnic groups are affected, the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes is extremely high and is continuing to rise rapidly. Innate biological factors, coupled with rapid changes in physical activity, diet, and other lifestyle behaviors are contributing factors in the increased burden of disease in this population. Therefore, we must do all that we can do reduce our sugar and processed carbohydrate intake.

Eating right for diabetes comes down to three things:
What you eat.
When you eat.
How much you eat.

• Doctors recommend a diet to lower your blood sugar. The pancreas simply doesn’t create enough insulin to digest all the sugar, and the blood sugar rises when you have diabetes, so a low-sugar diet helps correct this. Opt for Organic Agave Nectar or Natural Stevia as a sugar substitute. Avoid low calorie sweeteners including sweet and low, equal, and anything that consists of aspartame, as these will cause you to overeat and crave sweets.

• Plan Meals and Snacks with a Glycemic Index. You can either count carbohydrates or use a glycemic index that measures the amount of sugar in foods and snacks. Your goal is to maintain the blood-sugar level at a low, so you need to keep the sugar and carbohydrate level down. Focus on a high protein, high vegetable, low carbohydrate diet. Try avoiding white rice and white bread. Instead, substitute these with brown organic rice, gluten free grain bread, or organic corn tortillas.

• Cut your Portion Size. Eating a few meals over several sittings can be a huge benefit to stabilizing the blood-sugar level. The body has a need for a slower, more constant flow of energy that doesn’t explode all at once. Choose a planned time to eat three meals and three snacks and stick to the plan. Create a schedule and prepare meals and snacks ahead of time to make it easy for you to stick to your schedule.

• Add Fiber. Fiber, like that found in green vegetables, is soluble and is excellent for those with diabetes. Everyone benefits from this type of fiber since it actually slows the absorption of the sugar (glucose) in the intestines.
• Take Supplements: Chromium picolinate: 200 mcg of chromium daily, Organic Chia Seed: 2-3 tablespoons per day as a natural source of fiber, Cinnamon: ½ teaspoon per day.

For some brides and grooms to be, getting in shape for the big day is an important part of wedding planning.

Your weight is a balancing act, but the equation is simple. If you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain weight. And if you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight.

3,500 calories equals approximately one pound of fat. If you cut 500 calories from your typical diet each day, you’ll lose approximately one pound per week. Simple, right? Then why is weight loss so hard?

All too often, we make weight loss much more difficult than it needs to be with extreme diets that leave us cranky and starving, unhealthy lifestyle choices that undermine our dieting efforts, and emotional eating habits that stop us before we get started. But there’s a better way! By making smart choices every day, you can develop new eating habits and preferences that will leave you feeling satisfied.

Think lifestyle change, not short-term diet.
Permanent weight loss is not something that a “quick-fix” diet can achieve. Instead, think about weight loss as a permanent lifestyle change, a commitment to your health for life.

Aim to lose one to two pounds a week to ensure healthy weight loss.
Losing weight too fast can take a toll on your mind and body, making you feel sluggish, drained, and sick. When you drop a lot of weight quickly, you’re actually losing mostly water and muscle, rather than fat.

Set goals to keep you motivated.
Short-term goals, like wanting to fit into a bikini for the summer, usually don’t work as well as wanting to feel more confident or become healthier for your children’s sakes.

Keep a food journal to help you track your progress.
Keep a food journal and weigh yourself regularly, keeping track of each pound you lose and inch lost from your waist. By keeping track of your weight loss efforts, you’ll see the results in black and white, which will help you stay motivated.

Avoid common pitfalls.
Diets, especially fad diets or “quick-fix” pills and plans, often set you up for failure.

Pay attention while you’re eating.
Try not to eat while working, watching television, reading, using your computer, or driving. It’s too easy to mindlessly overeat.

Chew your food thoroughly.
Try chewing each bite 30 times before swallowing. You’ll prolong the experience and give yourself more time to enjoy each bite. And most of all stop eating before you are full.

Start the day with breakfast.
People who eat breakfast tend to be thinner than those who don’t. Starting your day with a healthy breakfast will jumps tart your metabolism, plus, it will help keep you from binge eating later in the day.

Serve yourself smaller portions.
One easy way to control portion size is by using small plates, bowls, and cups. This will make your portions appear larger.

Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time.
You will be more inclined to eat in moderation if you have thought out healthy meals and snacks in advance.

Cook your own meals.
Cooking meals at home allows you to control both portion size and what goes in to the food. Restaurant and packaged foods contain a lot more sodium, fat, and calories than food cooked at home and the portion sizes tend to be larger.

Don’t shop for groceries when you’re hungry.
Create a shopping list and stick to it. Be especially careful to avoid foods at the ends of the aisles and along the perimeter, where grocers tend to sell high-calorie snack and convenience foods.

Get plenty of sleep.
Lack of sleep has been shown to have a direct link to hunger, overeating, and weight gain. Exhaustion also impairs your judgment, which can lead to poor food choices. Aim for seven to eight hours of quality sleep per night.

Exercise.
Exercise is a dieter’s best friend. It not only burns calories, but also can actually improve your metabolism. No time for a long workout? Research shows that three 10-minute spurts of exercise per day are just as good as one 30-minute workout. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or park in the back of the parking lot. Every bit helps.

Drink more water.
You can easily reduce your daily calorie intake by replacing soda, alcohol, or coffee with water. Thirst can also be confused with hunger, so by drinking water, you may avoid consuming extra calories, plus it will help you break down food more easily.

Get Tested.
Food / substance sensitivities, adrenal fatigue, thyroid issues, and or vitamin or mineral deficiencies may be the root cause of inability to lose weight. Keep in mind it may take some experimenting to find the right diet for your individual body and lifestyle. It’s important that you feel satisfied so that you can stick with it on a long-term basis. There are many ways to lose weight. The key is to find what works for you.
