Param Sundari Review: Janhvi, Sidharth Shine in Rom-Com
Just like the traditional Onam Sadhya, which brings together a variety of flavors on a banana leaf, Param Sundari is a film that serves a mix of sweet romance, emotional clashes, and playful comedy. Directed by Tushar Jalota, this rom-com revives the charm of old-school Bollywood where love triumphs over hurdles and differences.
The story revolves around Param Sachdev, played by Sidharth Malhotra, an investor from Delhi who lives with his father, portrayed by Sanjay Kapoor. After several failed ventures, Param stumbles upon a dating app called Find My Soulmate. While skeptical about its credibility, he convinces his father to invest $600,000 in the startup. To test its success, he decides to meet his algorithm-selected match, a young woman in Kerala. With little expectation, he travels south with his friend, essayed by Manjot Singh.
Enter Sundari Damodar Pillai, played by Janhvi Kapoor, who runs a homestay in her ancestral mansion after losing her parents. Sundari lives with her younger sister Amu, played by Inayat Verma. Initially, she is annoyed by Param’s stereotypical views about Kerala, but as time passes, they slowly connect. However, when Sundari learns that Param’s visit had an ulterior motive, conflict arises. The question remains: can their love survive cultural gaps and deceit?
The film runs for 136 minutes and offers a straightforward, heartwarming narrative. Tushar Jalota embraces the essence of Bollywood romance—linear storytelling, music, humor, and emotional beats. Scenes like the traditional Kalaripayattu fight sequence and the thrilling Vallam Kali boat race add charm and regional authenticity.
On the flip side, the movie lacks a gripping conflict. Sundari’s character could have benefited from a deeper backstory, and the subplots sometimes feel underdeveloped. Yet, the performances carry the film. Sidharth’s return to romance is refreshing, while Janhvi shines in comedy and captivates with her traditional looks.
Visually, Param Sundari is stunning, with Kerala’s scenic beauty and vibrant music enhancing the viewing experience. The song Pardesiya is already a chartbuster, adding to the film’s appeal. Overall, while it may not break new ground, Param Sundari is a delightful one-time watch for rom-com lovers who enjoy love stories with a cultural twist.
