SUNY Professor Renu Balyan Named AI Public Good Fellow

Dr. Renu Balyan, Assistant Professor at SUNY Old Westbury, has been selected for the State University of New York’s inaugural AI for the Public Good Fellows program. She joins 19 other faculty members recognized for their expertise in artificial intelligence research and its ethical applications. The fellowship supports SUNY’s mission to integrate AI literacy and ethics into undergraduate education by Fall 2026. 

Dr. Balyan’s research focuses on natural language processing, machine learning, and deep learning, developing computational tools for education and healthcare. She aims to design learning experiences that encourage students to explore AI responsibly and equitably. Announcing the fellows, SUNY Chancellor John King highlighted the importance of AI proficiency across all disciplines. Since 2020, Dr. Balyan has led multiple NSF-funded projects on AI and data privacy. President Timothy E. Sams praised her appointment, noting it strengthens SUNY’s statewide leadership in ethical AI innovation and education.
