IMA, AAPI Collaborate To Empower Indian Medical Students

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) is set to formalize a collaboration with the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) this Saturday. The partnership, announced during IMA’s 100th All-India Medical Conference (NATCON), will enable more than 900 Indian medical students to engage with US-based medical institutions and collaborate with American peers.

The MoU will be signed by Dr Amit Chakrabarty, president of AAPI, and Dr Anil Nayak, president-elect of IMA, amid an event expected to host 5,000 doctors and health professionals. Initially launched in 2019, the initiative aims to streamline the process of sending Indian medical professionals to the US for mentorship, residency guidance, USMLE support, visas, and joint research opportunities.

The programme will leverage AAPI’s extensive network to provide students with letters of recommendation, internships, and guidance in career development, research, and journal publications. Gujarat is expected to be a major beneficiary, with around 200 students participating. Awareness campaigns by IMA and its partners will ensure smooth engagement and maximize opportunities for Indian medical students across the country.
