When Donald Trump returned to power, much of the world reacted with unease. Allies worried about unpredictability. Multilateral institutions braced for disruption. Economies prepared for volatility driven by tariffs, bilateral deal-making, and a retreat from long-standing global frameworks.
But India did not panic. It did not retreat. Instead, it recalibrated—quickly, quietly, and strategically.

What followed was not merely adaptation. It was an acceleration.

India moved ahead—and began winning.

At the center of this transformation stands Narendra Modi, whose leadership has elevated India from a balancing power to a platform-shaping force across global institutions such as BRICS and the G20.

A compelling discussion on the Grand Tamasha podcast by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace offers a crucial insight: India’s success in this turbulent environment is not accidental. It is strategic, deliberate, and increasingly, it is becoming a model the world is beginning to notice.

From Rules-Based Order to Power-Based Reality

For decades, the so-called “rules-based international order” was presented as neutral and fair. In reality, it reflected Western priorities, applied selectively, and often constrained emerging powers like India.

Trump did not create this reality—he exposed it.

By sidelining institutions such as the World Trade Organization and NATO in favor of bilateral negotiations, Trump accelerated a shift already underway. The global system moved away from predictable frameworks toward a more fluid, transactional order defined by three principles:

Power matters more than process.
Deals matter more than doctrine.
National interest outweighs global consensus.

Many nations found themselves uncomfortable in this environment, struggling to adjust to a system where relationships were conditional and influence had to be negotiated continuously.

India, however, was uniquely prepared.

Why India Is Thriving in a Transactional World

Unlike many countries that became deeply dependent on rigid alliances, India historically maintained strategic flexibility. Even during the height of globalization, it avoided overcommitment to any single power bloc.

This instinct—once seen as cautious or even indecisive—now appears remarkably prescient.

Under Modi’s leadership, this philosophy has evolved into a clear and confident doctrine: engage widely, but depend on no one.

India did not fundamentally reinvent its foreign policy under Trump 2.0. Instead, it refined and scaled an approach already in motion—multi-alignment backed by strategic autonomy.

In practical terms, this means India can simultaneously:

Collaborate with the United States on defense and technology

Engage with Russia on energy and security

Compete and cooperate with China where necessary

Lead coalitions across the Global South

This is not a contradiction. It is a calculated design.

In a world where alliances are fluid and interests shift rapidly, India’s ability to operate across multiple geopolitical spaces has become a decisive advantage.

The Modi Doctrine: Leadership Without Dependence

Under Narendra Modi, India has moved beyond passive participation in global affairs. It has become an active shaper of outcomes.

This transformation rests on three pillars.

1. Assertive Global Presence

India no longer hesitates to articulate its position on critical issues—from trade and technology to climate and conflict. Its voice is clear, confident, and increasingly influential.

2. Platform Leadership

India is not merely present in global forums—it shapes their agenda. Whether through G20 leadership or its active role in BRICS, India has demonstrated its ability to influence outcomes across diverse coalitions.

3. Strategic Confidence

India engages major powers on its own terms. This confidence is rooted not in rhetoric, but in economic growth, demographic strength, and geopolitical relevance.

In a world increasingly driven by strong leaders and direct engagement, Modi’s leadership style has proven not just effective—but aligned with the times.

Jaishankar: Precision Behind the Vision

While Modi provides strategic direction, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar ensures execution with precision.

His diplomacy has been instrumental in:

Translating vision into actionable strategy

Managing complex negotiations across global platforms

Articulating India’s position with clarity and confidence

Building coalitions that support India’s initiatives

Jaishankar’s approach is pragmatic, flexible, and sharply focused on national interest—perfectly aligned with the demands of a transactional world.

Together, Modi and Jaishankar represent a leadership model that combines vision with execution.

BRICS: From Bloc to Strategic Platform

India’s performance within BRICS illustrates how it has turned potential constraints into strategic advantages.

Traditionally viewed as a grouping dominated by China and Russia, BRICS could have limited India’s influence. Instead, India reshaped its role within the bloc.

It asserted its independent voice.
It championed Global South priorities.
It pushed for reform in global financial systems.
It ensured no single country monopolized the narrative.

Rather than treating BRICS as a challenge, India transformed it into a platform—one that amplifies its voice across emerging economies.

Even discussions around BRICS expansion, initially seen as a potential dilution of influence, were approached with calculated pragmatism. India supported a broader, more inclusive framework while safeguarding its strategic interests.

This is diplomacy not as reaction—but as design.

G20 Leadership: Bridging a Divided World

India’s leadership in the G20 further reinforces its growing global stature.

At a time when geopolitical tensions threatened to paralyze global cooperation, India delivered results. It achieved consensus where others saw deadlock.

Under Modi’s leadership, the G20:

Produced a unified declaration despite deep divisions

Elevated the voice of the Global South

Facilitated the inclusion of the African Union

Promoted digital public infrastructure as a global model

Advocated for climate equity and sustainable development

This was more than a diplomatic success. It demonstrated capability.

India showed that it could bridge divides—not by imposing dominance, but by building consensus across competing interests.

That is leadership of a different kind.

Managing the U.S. Relationship—Without Dependence

Trump’s approach to global relations is fundamentally transactional. Partnerships are evaluated based on outcomes, reciprocity, and immediate benefit.

Many traditional allies struggled to adapt to this shift.

India did not.

Instead, it approached the relationship with the United States pragmatically:

Strengthening defense and technology cooperation

Engaging in tough but constructive trade negotiations

Avoiding overdependence on U.S. policy direction

India works with the United States—but it does not rely solely on it.

This distinction is critical. It allows India to benefit from partnership without being constrained by it.

Europe Turns to India—And Washington Takes Notice

As global trade tensions intensified under Trump-era tariff disruptions, Europe made a decisive strategic pivot toward India. Leading this shift was Ursula von der Leyen—the head of the European Union’s executive body responsible for shaping trade policy across all member states. During her high-profile visit to New Delhi in January 2026, she elevated the India–EU relationship to a historic level by describing the proposed Free Trade Agreement as the “mother of all deals.” In her words, this was a “tale of two giants”—India and the European Union—choosing a win-win partnership at a time when global trade systems were under strain.

Von der Leyen’s visit was not an isolated event—it was part of a broader wave of European outreach to India. Leaders such as Emmanuel Macron and Olaf Scholz had also engaged directly with Narendra Modi through state visits and strategic dialogues, reinforcing Europe’s intent to deepen economic and geopolitical ties with India. The India–EU Free Trade Agreement—finalized in principle after nearly two decades of on-and-off negotiations—aims to create one of the largest economic partnerships in the world, connecting nearly two billion people and accounting for approximately 25% of global GDP. Designed to reduce tariffs, remove trade barriers, and strengthen cooperation across sectors such as manufacturing, digital trade, and supply chains, the agreement represents far more than commerce—it is a strategic realignment. That this breakthrough was achieved during von der Leyen’s visit—where she also participated as a chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations—sent a clear message: in a fractured global economy, Europe is not retreating inward. It is turning toward India as a central pillar of its future growth and stability.

What makes this moment particularly significant is what followed. Almost immediately after the momentum around the India–EU deal became evident, the United States under Donald Trump signaled a softening stance toward India on tariffs and trade friction. Whether coincidental or strategic recalibration, the sequence was unmistakable: as Europe moved aggressively to secure deeper economic ties with India, Washington adjusted its posture. This was not just about trade—it was about influence. The message was clear: India is no longer a secondary player reacting to global power shifts. It is now a central actor shaping them. When two major global powers begin recalibrating their economic strategies in response to India’s positioning, it reflects a deeper transformation—India is not waiting to be chosen; it is being competed for.

Modi–Putin Optics goes viral

If there was any doubt that India’s multi-alignment strategy was sending shockwaves across global capitals, it was erased during the high-profile BRICS summit held in China in 2025, where Narendra Modi met with Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping. While the formal meetings focused on BRICS expansion, Global South coordination, and reshaping financial systems outside Western dominance, it was an unscripted moment that captured the world’s attention—and triggered quiet concern in Washington. Modi and Putin were seen riding together in a single car, without visible aides or diplomatic entourages from either side. In the rigid world of high-security diplomacy, this was not just unusual—it was a statement.

The visuals went viral within hours. Analysts across global media interpreted the moment as a powerful signal of personal trust and strategic comfort between India and Russia—despite intense Western pressure to isolate Moscow. But the implications went far beyond optics. This was happening within the broader framework of BRICS and overlapping alignments with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization—platforms increasingly seen as counterweights to Western-led institutions. For policymakers in Washington, including those around Donald Trump, the message was unmistakable: India was not drifting into any camp—it was confidently operating across all of them. At a time when the U.S. was attempting to recalibrate global influence through tariffs and pressure tactics, India was demonstrating that it could engage simultaneously with the West, Russia, and China—on its own terms. The takeaway was clear, and it likely did not go unnoticed: isolating India was not an option. Competing for India had become a necessity.

China: Competition Without Escalation

India’s relationship with China remains complex, but its approach reflects maturity and discipline.

Rather than reacting emotionally, India has adopted a balanced strategy:

Strengthening its security posture

Reducing economic and strategic vulnerabilities

Building partnerships to counterbalance influence

At the same time, it has avoided unnecessary escalation.

This ability to compete without overreacting provides India with flexibility—an essential asset in an unpredictable global environment.

Economic Strategy: Turning Disruption into Opportunity

Trump-era trade policies disrupted global supply chains, forcing companies to reconsider their dependence on China.

India recognized the opportunity.

Under Modi, India has positioned itself as a viable alternative manufacturing hub. Initiatives such as “Make in India,” combined with expanding trade agreements and infrastructure investment, have attracted global capital seeking diversification.

What could have been a global challenge became a national opportunity.

India’s economic strategy reflects a broader pattern: it does not merely respond to change—it leverages it.

Outperforming the World Despite Global Disruptions

India’s economic performance under these turbulent global conditions further reinforces why it is not just surviving—but winning. According to the International Monetary Fund, India is projected to grow at approximately 6.5% in 2026, making it the fastest-growing major economy in the world . This is not a marginal lead—it is a structural advantage. In comparison, the United States is expected to grow at around 2.3%, while the Eurozone struggles near 1.1% growth, weighed down by energy shocks and geopolitical instability . Even more striking, India alone is expected to contribute roughly 17% of global GDP growth, nearly double the U.S. contribution of about 9.9% . In a slowing global economy—where overall growth has been downgraded to around 3.1% due to geopolitical tensions and war disruptions—India stands out as a primary engine of expansion .

What makes this performance remarkable is the context. This growth is happening despite Trump-era tariff disruptions, global supply chain shifts, and the economic shockwaves triggered by the ongoing Iran conflict, which has increased inflation and disrupted energy markets worldwide . While advanced economies are grappling with rising costs, slowing manufacturing, and policy uncertainty, India has maintained relative macroeconomic stability—with inflation projected at a manageable 4–5% range and strong domestic demand supporting growth . Its nominal GDP has already crossed $4.5 trillion, placing it among the world’s top economies . In simple terms, while much of the world is adjusting to disruption, India is converting that disruption into momentum—strengthening its position as one of the few economies driving global growth in an otherwise uncertain era.

Energy Strategy: Turning Crisis into Control

India’s handling of the global oil and energy crisis is perhaps one of the clearest examples of strategic execution under pressure. Despite the Iran war disrupting nearly 20% of global oil and gas flows through the Strait of Hormuz and exposing India’s vulnerability—where 50–55% of its oil and LNG imports typically pass through that route —the country avoided a full-scale energy shock. Instead of depending on a single region, India rapidly diversified its supply chain. Russian crude alone now accounts for roughly 40% of India’s total oil imports, up dramatically from negligible levels just a few years ago . In fact, amid peak disruptions, India increased Russian imports by as much as 90% month-on-month, ensuring continuity of supply even as Middle Eastern shipments faltered . Simultaneously, India expanded sourcing across more than 40 global suppliers, including the U.S., Russia, and Australia, effectively insulating itself from regional shocks .

Even more impressive is how India managed domestic stability despite external chaos. While global markets faced shortages and price spikes, India secured up to 60 days of crude supply and maintained stable fuel availability across the country . It increased domestic LPG production by nearly 40%, offsetting sharp import declines caused by war disruptions . At a time when LPG imports were projected to fall by almost 50% due to the conflict , India proactively sourced alternative shipments and prioritized domestic consumption. The result: while much of the world struggled with energy insecurity, India maintained continuity, controlled inflationary pressure, and ensured that economic momentum was not derailed. This was not luck—it was a calculated strategy built on diversification, flexibility, and decisive policy action.

A Model the World Is Beginning to Follow

The most significant shift is not just what India is doing—but how the world is responding.

Increasingly, global analysts and policymakers are recognizing that India offers an alternative path in a fragmented world.

India has demonstrated that it is possible to:

Maintain strategic autonomy without isolation

Expand influence without overdependence

Lead without dominating

Remain flexible without appearing weak

In a world where many nations feel forced into binary choices, India has shown that a third path exists.

This is why India is not just succeeding—it is becoming a model.

The Road Ahead: A Defining Decade

India now stands at a pivotal moment. The coming decade will determine whether it consolidates its position as a leading global power or falls short of its potential.

Three factors will shape this outcome.

Economic Execution
Growth must translate into manufacturing strength, job creation, and global competitiveness.

Strategic Discipline
Multi-alignment must remain focused and intentional—not drift into inconsistency.

Domestic Reform
Internal reforms are essential to fully leverage external opportunities.

India—Built for the Present Moment

Trump’s world is unpredictable, competitive, and transactional. For many nations, this represents a crisis.

For India, it is an opportunity.

India’s strategy—anchored in multi-alignment, economic pragmatism, and geopolitical maturity—positions it uniquely in this evolving order.

Power today is not defined by geography alone. It is defined by networks, adaptability, and strategic clarity.

India has all three.

This is not just India’s moment.

It is India’s moment—amplified, accelerated, and increasingly acknowledged by the world.

The chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” echoed through the stands as Harmanpreet Kaur and her team lifted the ICC Women’s World Cup trophy—India’s first ever. Tears, laughter, and disbelief filled the air. This was more than a victory; it was the culmination of decades of struggle, resilience, and belief by women who had long played in the shadows.

From the Shadows to the Spotlight

Not long ago, Indian women’s cricket existed in near anonymity. Matches were played in second-tier venues, press conferences attracted only a handful of reporters, and even international games often went untelevised. In 2018, when India toured South Africa, there was no live broadcast of their ODIs—the only updates came via scorecards on social media. When journalists protested, a live stream was hurriedly arranged, but the message was clear: women’s cricket was still an afterthought.

Back then, Snehal Pradhan, a former cricketer and now ICC manager for women’s cricket, famously tweeted an appeal asking for 22 more followers to help the BCCI Women’s Twitter account reach 1,000 followers. That account now boasts over a million—a reflection of how far the game has come. And nothing symbolizes that transformation more powerfully than what happened on November 2, 2025.

The Final: A Tale of Grit and Grace

The final was more than a cricket match; it was an emotional rollercoaster that kept 39,555 fans at the stadium and millions watching across the globe on the edge of their seats. India’s 298 for 7 against South Africa was the second-highest total ever scored in a Women’s World Cup final. Shafali Verma, just 21 years old, lit up the night with a blistering 87 off 78 balls, while Deepti Sharma delivered an all-round masterclass—a run-a-ball fifty followed by five wickets for 39 runs.

Deepti’s feat was historic: she became the first player, male or female, to score a fifty and take a five-wicket haul in a World Cup knockout match. Her 22 wickets in the tournament placed her among the greatest all-rounders in women’s cricket history.

When South Africa began their chase, led by their prolific captain Laura Wolvaardt, tension filled the air. Wolvaardt’s majestic 101 nearly threatened to rewrite the script, but once she fell to Deepti’s clever variation, India’s destiny seemed written. The roar that followed the final wicket—caught by Harmanpreet herself—was not just for a game won, but for a generation redeemed.

The Captain Who Dreamed Beyond Limits

As the crowd erupted, Harmanpreet Kaur—India’s captain, trailblazer, and emotional anchor—stood motionless for a moment, absorbing the surreal sight. In the post-match press conference, she confessed, “I’m numb. I can’t even express what I’m feeling. There were so many ups and downs, but through everything, we had self-belief.”

Self-belief—that was the word she repeated over and over, because it was this quiet conviction that had carried the team through the storms of the past month. After early losses to Australia, South Africa, and England, India’s campaign seemed doomed. But a turning point came after their defeat to England. That night, the team huddled together and decided to change their approach—through visualization, meditation, and unshakable faith in each other. “We started seeing the trophy every day,” Harmanpreet said. “We played this tournament in our minds before we stepped onto the field.”

It showed. The semifinal win against Australia, inspired by Harmanpreet’s calm leadership and the collective fire of her players, was emotional enough to move even the stoic captain to tears. But the final brought pure, unfiltered joy. “I’ve played many World Cups with Smriti [Mandhana],” she said later. “Every time we lost, we went home heartbroken. This time, we said to ourselves, “From ball one, we’ll play like champions.”

Heroes of the Night

If Harmanpreet embodied belief, Shafali Verma represented fearless youth. Barely out of her teens, she became the youngest player ever to win the Player of the Match award in a World Cup final. Her 104-run opening stand with Smriti Mandhana laid the foundation for India’s triumph. Mandhana, India’s vice-captain and emotional heart of the team, described the victory as “bigger than a trophy—it’s a revolution for women in sports.”

Deepti Sharma’s match-defining spell was the stuff of legend. Her accuracy, composure, and control under pressure reminded many of India’s greats. “She’s in a league of her own,” said coach Amol Muzumdar. “Every time we needed something special, Deepti delivered.”

And yet, it was the unity and humility of the team that won hearts. The sight of Jemimah Rodrigues and Radha Yadav hugging South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp after the match went viral. “Sabki victory hai—this is everyone’s victory,” smiled Mandhana as she congratulated journalists who had supported the team for years. It was a rare kind of sportsmanship—one that turned rivals into friends and fans into family.

Celebration with Dignity

As the players danced, laughed, and took selfies with the trophy, they made sure to share their moment with those who had paved the way. Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Anjum Chopra—pioneers of Indian women’s cricket—were invited to the stage to lift the trophy alongside the team. Goswami, tears streaming down her face, hugged Harmanpreet tightly. “Jhulan di was my biggest support,” the captain said. “She was my leader when I was new to the team. To share this with her is beyond words.”

In the stands, fathers, mothers, and young girls waved the tricolor with pride. Outside the stadium, celebrations spilled into the streets. For once, India’s women athletes were not being compared to the men—they were being celebrated for who they were.

Messages from Legends

Congratulatory messages poured in from across the world. Virat Kohli called the team an “inspiration for generations to come.” Sachin Tendulkar drew a poignant parallel to 1983: “That victory inspired an entire generation. Today, our women’s team has done the same. They’ve shown millions of young girls that dreams do come true.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the players the next day, praising their resilience and poise: “You have rewritten India’s cricketing story. You’ve not just won a cup; you’ve won the heart of a nation.”

A Journey Written in Struggle

The victory meant more because of where they started. For years, India’s women cricketers played without media attention, training facilities, or fair pay. Even the 2013 Women’s World Cup in India was held in small club grounds, overshadowed by domestic men’s matches. Players like Mithali and Jhulan often had to buy their own gear and play in front of near-empty stands.

Equal pay was once a distant dream. Until 2022, women cricketers earned only a fraction of what their male counterparts made—both in match fees and annual contracts. Though recent reforms have introduced parity in match fees, a clear gap still remains in contracts. The highest women’s annual contract, valued at around $60,000, is still below the men’s lowest contract grade of $120,000. Yet these remarkable players continued to give their all—not for financial gain, but for the love of the game, their passion, and the pride of representing their nation.

The Role of the Women’s Premier League

The launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023 changed everything. For years, officials dismissed the idea, claiming there wasn’t enough talent or financial viability. But the WPL’s massive success proved them wrong. Young stars like Shafali, Richa Ghosh, and Amanjot Kaur honed their skills in that high-pressure environment, learning how to handle expectations and the spotlight—experience that paid off handsomely in the World Cup.

As Harmanpreet said, “WPL gave us exposure and confidence. We learned to play fearless cricket because we played with and against the best.”

A Victory for Every Indian Woman

The final whistle at Navi Mumbai was more than the end of a match—it was the dawn of a new era. For decades, Indian women had fought stereotypes about what they could or could not do. This team—daughters, sisters, students, and athletes—shattered those ceilings with their bats and smiles.

The image of Harmanpreet dancing bhangra with her father after lifting the trophy, or of Smriti waving to fans shouting her name, captured a larger truth: these women had given the country not just a win, but a vision of equality and joy.

A Shared Celebration

What made the victory even more remarkable was its inclusiveness. From the players to the journalists, from fans to former pioneers—everyone felt part of the journey. “They didn’t just win for themselves,” one reporter wrote. “They made us feel like we were part of their story.”

That generosity—seen when Indian players consoled their South African counterparts—was emblematic of this team’s character. In an age where sporting rivalries often breed toxicity, India’s women showed that greatness can coexist with grace.

Legacy Beyond the Trophy

This win isn’t just about silverware—it’s a movement. With record-breaking performances, rising stars, and the Women’s Premier League shaping fearless cricketers, India’s women have redefined the nation’s sporting legacy.

As fireworks lit the Navi Mumbai sky, one truth stood out: this was not just the night India won the World Cup. It was the night Indian women’s cricket truly came home.

The Final Word

When the celebrations died down in the early hours, Harmanpreet and her teammates gathered on the field for one last photo. The trophy glistened in the floodlights, reflecting the faces of women who had carried the dreams of millions. “We’ve waited all our lives for this,” said Harmanpreet softly. “And it was worth every second.”

From forgotten fixtures to full stadiums, from unequal pay to unbreakable pride—the Indian women’s cricket team’s journey has been one of grit, grace, and glory. As fireworks lit up the Navi Mumbai sky, one truth became clear: this was not just the night India won the World Cup. It was the night Indian women’s cricket truly came home.

On August 15, 2025, as India, a land of ancient civilization and diverse cultures, marks its 78th year of independence, Indians across the world—including the more than 5 million-strong Indian-American community—pause to honor the courage, vision, and resilience of the freedom fighters who broke the chains of colonialism in 1947. But Independence Day is more than a remembrance of struggle. It is a celebration of how far India has come—from a fledgling post-colonial state to a vibrant democracy and a rising global power.

This year’s celebration holds special significance. India is not only the world’s largest democracy but also its fastest-growing major economy. Its influence spans space exploration, digital innovation, global diplomacy, and soft power through culture and values. And the Indian diaspora, particularly Indian-Americans, has played a pivotal role in elevating India’s voice on the global stage.

Let us delve into the rich history of India’s independence struggle, highlight key achievements over nearly eight decades, and examine the significant contributions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014, a period marked by accelerated growth and increased global recognition.

The Dawn of a Nation: India’s Independence Struggle (Pre-1947)

The history of India’s independence struggle is a saga of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering determination. While the formal British rule began in 1858 after the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 (often considered the First War of Indian Independence), the seeds of resistance were sown much earlier. The British East India Company’s exploitative policies and cultural subjugation fueled simmering discontent, leading to numerous local uprisings.

The late 19th century witnessed the emergence of organized nationalism. The Indian National Congress (INC), founded in 1885, initially sought greater representation and administrative reforms but gradually evolved into a powerful mass movement advocating for complete self-rule. Early leaders like Dadabhai Naoroji, Surendranath Banerjee, and Gopal Krishna Gokhale laid the intellectual foundations for India’s political awakening.

The early 20th century saw the rise of more radical voices and movements. The Swadeshi Movement (1905-1908), sparked by the partition of Bengal, emphasized economic self-reliance and boycotts of British goods. Revolutionary nationalists like Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, and Subhas Chandra Bose pursued armed resistance, inspiring a generation with their daring acts and sacrifices.

However, it was the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi on the political scene in 1915 that fundamentally transformed the independence movement. Gandhi introduced the philosophy and practice of ‘Satyagraha’ (truth-force) and non-violent civil disobedience. His mass movements, including the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22), the Salt Satyagraha (1930), and the Quit India Movement (1942), galvanized millions across the country, cutting across social, economic, and regional divides. These movements, characterized by widespread public participation and peaceful resistance, put immense pressure on the British Raj.

Simultaneously, other influential leaders emerged. Jawaharlal Nehru articulated a vision for a modern, socialist, and secular India. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel became a stalwart of unification, instrumental in integrating over 500 princely states into the Indian Union. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar championed the rights of the marginalized and played a pivotal role in drafting the Indian Constitution.

Despite the unified struggle, the demand for a separate Muslim state led to the painful Partition of India in 1947. While independence was achieved on August 15, 1947, it came at the cost of widespread communal violence and mass displacement, leaving an indelible scar on the subcontinent’s history. Yet, amidst the turmoil, India embarked on its journey as an independent, sovereign nation, committed to democracy, secularism, and development.

Building a Sovereign Nation: Achievements in 78 Years of Independence

The seven decades following independence were a period of nation-building, marked by remarkable achievements against daunting odds:

Democratic Resilience and Stability: Despite predictions of its fragmentation, India sustained itself as the world’s largest democracy. Regular elections, peaceful transfers of power, and a vibrant multi-party system became hallmarks of its political landscape. This commitment to democratic values, even through challenging periods, earned global respect.

Green Revolution and Food Security: From a state of chronic food shortages and reliance on foreign aid, India achieved self-sufficiency in food grain production by the 1970s through the Green Revolution. This transformation, driven by high-yielding varieties of seeds, improved irrigation, and modern agricultural practices, was critical in averting widespread famine and ensuring food security for its burgeoning population.

Foundations of Space and Nuclear Prowess: India embarked on ambitious scientific endeavors. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), established in 1969, laid the groundwork for a robust space program. India also developed indigenous nuclear technology, demonstrating its scientific prowess with peaceful nuclear explosions (like Pokhran-I in 1974), establishing a credible minimum deterrence capability.

Economic Liberalization and the Rise of IT: For decades, India followed a socialist-inspired economic model. However, the economic reforms initiated in 1991 liberalized the economy, opened it to global trade and investment, and unleashed its entrepreneurial spirit. This led to significant economic growth, particularly in the information technology and software services sector, which transformed India into a global outsourcing hub.

Expansion of Healthcare and Education: Significant strides were made in expanding access to healthcare and education. Public health initiatives led to the eradication of diseases like smallpox and polio. The establishment of numerous universities, engineering colleges (like IITs), and medical institutions laid the foundation for a skilled workforce.

Leadership in the Non-Aligned Movement: During the Cold War, India, under Jawaharlal Nehru, championed the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), advocating for the newly independent nations to maintain autonomy from the two major power blocs. This stance gave India significant moral authority and a leadership role in the developing world.

A New Chapter: India Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi (2014-Present)

Since assuming office in May 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ushered in a period characterized by ambitious reforms, accelerated development, and a more assertive role for India on the global stage. This era has seen a distinct emphasis on “New India,” “Make in India,” “Digital India,” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India). His tenure has been marked by a focus on “delivery politics,” aiming for visible impact on the ground.

Accelerated Digital Transformation and Financial Inclusion:

The Digital India initiative, launched in 2015, has been a flagship program. It aimed to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. A key success has been the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which has revolutionized digital transactions, making India a global leader in real-time payments. The expansion of the Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM) Trinity has significantly boosted financial inclusion, bringing millions into the formal banking system and enabling direct benefit transfers (DBT) for welfare schemes, drastically reducing corruption and leakages.

Universal Health Coverage through Ayushman Bharat:

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), launched in 2018, is the world’s largest government-funded health insurance scheme. It aims to provide health cover of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to over 500 million vulnerable Indians. This initiative has been crucial in reducing out-of-pocket healthcare expenses for millions.

Enhanced Space Capabilities and Private Sector Participation:

Under PM Modi’s direct oversight and encouragement, ISRO has achieved landmark successes. The Chandrayaan-3 mission’s successful soft landing near the Moon’s South Pole in August 2023 and the Aditya-L1 solar mission in January 2024 have garnered global acclaim. The government has also opened up the space sector to private players, fostering a vibrant ecosystem of space startups and setting ambitious goals like establishing an Indian space station by 2035.

Boost to Indigenous Manufacturing and Defense Indigenization:

The ‘Make in India’ program (launched 2014) and the broader ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’ (Self-Reliant India campaign, launched 2020) have prioritized boosting domestic manufacturing across various sectors, including defense. The Modi government has implemented policy reforms, such as the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020 and Positive Indigenization Lists, to reduce import dependence and promote indigenous development and production of defense equipment. This has led to a significant increase in defense exports.

Global Recognition and Cultural Diplomacy:

PM Modi has actively promoted India’s cultural heritage on the global stage. His proposal at the United Nations in 2014 led to the declaration of June 21 as International Yoga Day, now celebrated worldwide. He has frequently used multilateral platforms, including India’s G20 Presidency in 2023, to advocate for global cooperation on issues like climate change, digital public infrastructure, and sustainable development, positioning India as a bridge between the Global North and South.

Accelerated Infrastructure Development:

Infrastructure development has been a hallmark of the Modi government. Massive investments have been channeled into building expressways, national highways, and freight corridors and modernizing railways and airports. The PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan aims to integrate infrastructure planning and project execution, leading to faster and more efficient development.

Economic Reforms and Ease of Doing Business:

The Modi government has undertaken a series of economic reforms, including the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017, simplifying India’s indirect tax regime. Efforts to improve the Ease of Doing Business have led to India’s significant rise in global rankings, attracting foreign direct investment.

Economic Might: The Engine of a New India

India’s GDP is projected to surpass $4.3 trillion in 2025, placing it firmly among the top five economies in the world. Its cities—from Bengaluru and Hyderabad to Pune and Gurugram—have become global centers for IT services, AI research, fintech, and biotechnology. Home to over 110 unicorn startups, India has become a hotbed of entrepreneurial energy, especially in clean energy, edtech, and digital platforms.

Government programs like Digital India, Make in India, and Startup India have reshaped the economic landscape, encouraging innovation and attracting foreign investment. India’s space program, ISRO, is admired globally, with missions like Chandrayaan-3 and Gaganyaan boosting national pride.

Yet, what makes India’s rise unique is its people-powered growth—a young population, increasingly educated, connected, and ambitious.

India’s Soaring Strength: Space and Defense Achievements

In the last decade, India has made tremendous strides in space exploration and defense, proving its capability as a rising global power—not just in economics and diplomacy, but also in science, technology, and national security.

Following the remarkable success of Operation Sindoor, India’s strategic defense capabilities have entered a new era. This bold military rescue mission not only showcased India’s tactical brilliance but also reinforced its rapid-response capabilities and global reach. The operation was executed using Made-in-India military hardware, including indigenous aircraft, surveillance drones, and communication systems—all developed under the ambitious Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. From the Tejas fighter jet to the Arjun battle tank and Astra missiles, India is now manufacturing advanced defense equipment that rivals global counterparts.

On the space front, India continues to make headlines. After the celebrated Chandrayaan-3 lunar landing, the Gaganyaan mission—India’s first crewed space flight—is set to launch soon, placing Indian astronauts in orbit. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has also ramped up international collaborations, launching satellites for dozens of countries while expanding its own constellation of Earth observation and navigation satellites.

Together, these achievements reflect a confident, capable India, rooted in indigenous innovation and global ambition. For Indian-Americans, watching India emerge as a leader in space and defense isn’t just a matter of national pride—it’s a sign that the motherland is securing its rightful place among the world’s superpowers, with strength in both vision and action.

Digital India and Make in India: Building a Self-Reliant Future

Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has undergone a digital and manufacturing revolution that has transformed the daily lives of over a billion citizens and inspired global admiration. Two flagship initiatives—Digital India and Make in India—have reshaped India’s economic and technological landscape.

At the heart of Digital India lies the success of UPI (Unified Payments Interface), which has revolutionized how Indians transact. From small tea vendors in remote villages to major retail chains in urban cities, UPI has become the de facto digital payment standard. With over 10 billion transactions monthly, UPI is not only used across India but is now being adopted in countries like Nepal, Bhutan, the UAE, Singapore, and France. This seamless, real-time payment system—developed in India—is now a model for financial inclusion worldwide.

Meanwhile, the Make in India movement has boosted domestic production across sectors—defense, electronics, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and more. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when global supply chains collapsed, India surprised the world by producing its own vaccines (Covaxin and Covishield) and becoming the pharmacy of the world, supplying doses to over 100 countries.

From mobile phones to medical equipment, India is now manufacturing goods at scale, creating jobs, reducing imports, and building export strength. For Indian-Americans, these achievements symbolize a resurgent, self-reliant India—an India that doesn’t just dream big but builds, innovates, and leads on the global stage.

Prime Minister Modi’s Unique Leadership Status:

Beyond policy achievements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership itself has garnered notable recognition. He has become the second longest-serving Prime Minister of India as of July 2025 (surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s uninterrupted tenure from 1947 to 1964, with Indira Gandhi holding the longest cumulative tenure). Furthermore, he has consistently maintained one of the highest approval ratings among world leaders, according to surveys by international firms like US-based Morning Consult. This sustained high approval rating, observed over several years, reflects significant domestic popularity and a strong mandate. His diplomatic engagements and presence on the global stage have also contributed to India’s enhanced international profile.

Diplomatic Emergence: From Non-Alignment to Leadership

India has transitioned from a passive player to a strategic influencer in global politics. As a member of the G20, BRICS, the Quad, and the United Nations Security Council (as a rotating member), India’s voice carries increasing weight.

India is also a first responder in humanitarian crises, a leader in pharmaceutical exports, and a pioneer in digital diplomacy. In 2023, India hosted the G20 summit with a focus on “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” echoing the ancient Vedic mantra Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

India’s foreign policy now reflects confidence, cooperation, and cultural pride—a model admired by emerging economies and respected by superpowers.

The Power of the Indian Diaspora:

A significant, though often understated, contributor to India’s growing global stature and economic strength is its vast diaspora. Numbering over 32 million people worldwide, the Indian diaspora maintains strong ties to their homeland.

A remarkable testament to the strength of the Indian diaspora, especially Indian‑Americans, is the record-breaking amount of money sent back home. In fiscal year 2024–25, overseas Indians remitted a staggering $135.46 billion, marking a 14% increase from the previous year and the highest ever recorded. Indian‑Americans—who account for nearly 28% of India’s remittance inflows—have been a key driver of this surge, helping to support families, finance education, launch businesses, and fuel development projects across India. These personal transfers now rival and even exceed India’s foreign direct investment receipts, offering a stable and powerful source of external financing. For Indian‑Americans, sending money home is more than remittance—it’s a bridge of empathy, investment, and shared progress.

The Tricolor Across Oceans

As the Tiranga (tricolor) flutters from the Red Fort in Delhi to city halls and community centers in Atlanta, Chicago, and San Jose, it reminds us that freedom is not a finish line—it is a living flame.

India@78 is more than a milestone. It is a mirror to the past, a celebration of the present, and a launchpad for the future.

Global Indians, Global Citizens

As we celebrate India@78, it’s clear that the story of India is also the story of its people—within the nation and across its vast diaspora. Independence gave India political freedom, but it also launched a spiritual and civilizational journey of self-discovery, reinvention, and global service.

Indian-Americans embody this legacy. They are doctors who heal, engineers who build, artists who inspire, and leaders who elevate. Whether they are donating to a school in Gujarat or leading climate policy discussions in Washington, D.C., they carry India’s soul in every step.

India’s Potential as a Vishva Guru: A Teacher to the World

As India celebrates 78 years of independence, a powerful idea is gaining momentum—India as “Vishva Guru,” or Teacher to the World. This ancient concept, rooted in India’s civilizational wisdom, envisions the nation not merely as a political or economic power, but as a moral and spiritual guide for the modern world.

India has always offered more than material wealth. It has given the world timeless philosophies: Ahimsa (non-violence), Dharma (righteous living), Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family), and Yoga—ideas that address humanity’s deepest needs in an age of conflict, division, and unrest.

In a world seeking inner peace and sustainability, India’s teachings of balance, non-attachment, mindfulness, and universal harmony are more relevant than ever. From the Bhagavad Gita to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, from Ayurveda to Vedic math, India’s contributions span mind, body, and spirit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi often speaks of India as a “force for good,“ promoting peace, diplomacy, and shared prosperity. India’s leadership in the International Solar Alliance, digital public infrastructure (like UPI), climate diplomacy, and vaccine distribution shows that India can lead without domination—through knowledge, compassion, and collaboration.

For Indian-Americans, this is more than rhetoric—it is a call to action. As cultural ambassadors, educators, scientists, and entrepreneurs, they are already helping share India’s light with the world.

India’s path to becoming a Vishva Guru is not about supremacy, but service—uplifting others through wisdom, innovation, and values rooted in eternal truth.

A Call to Celebrate—and Contribute

This August 15, let’s go beyond flag-hoisting and singing the national anthem. Let’s:

Teach our children about the sacrifices of our freedom fighters.

Reflect on how India’s values of peace, diversity, and dialogue can solve modern challenges.

Volunteer or donate to causes that strengthen India’s future—from girls’ education to clean energy.

Support Indian-American voices in media, politics, and education to shape the narrative with pride and purpose.

India’s journey from gaining independence in 1947 to becoming a significant global player in 2025 is a testament to its democratic resilience, economic dynamism, and cultural richness. The independence struggle laid the foundation for a vibrant nation, and the subsequent decades saw steady progress across various sectors. The period since 2014, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, has witnessed an intensified focus on digital transformation, social welfare, strategic autonomy, and a more assertive global role. As India continues its trajectory towards becoming a developed nation, its blend of ancient wisdom, democratic values, and modern aspirations positions it as a crucial voice and contributor to the evolving global order.

To every Indian, whether in Mumbai or Miami, Delhi or Dallas

Happy Independence Day.

Jai Hind.

On May 4, 2025, over 100 Hindu Americans gathered at Bayfront Park in Miami, Florida, to peacefully protest the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir.

Organized by members of the local Hindu community, the demonstration sought justice for the innocent lives lost and called on global leaders to designate Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism. Protesters carried powerful placards with messages like “Silence is not peace; silence is surrender” and “Dharma protects those who protect it,” voicing their collective outrage against the targeted violence.

The rally stood as a strong, united front against terrorism and highlighted the continued persecution of Hindus in the region. Community leaders emphasized the urgent need for global solidarity in defending human rights and holding those responsible accountable. The event concluded with a solemn yet hopeful call for lasting peace, justice for the victims, and an end to terror-driven atrocities.

Raj Shah of Desh-Videsh Media Group spoke with several local leaders during the event. Here’s what they had to say:

A respected Hindu leader, Dr. Vinod Patel, founding trustee of the South Florida Hindu Temple, delivered a powerful message:

“Namaste. I’m Vinod Patel. As a proud and committed Hindu, I believe the time has come for our community to rise, stop remaining in the shadows, and boldly speak out against violence. We must no longer remain silent.”

Dr. Chander Shayker, also a founding trustee of the South Florida Hindu Temple and a native of Kashmir, offered a heartfelt reflection:

“Our suffering spans over 2,500 years, marked by relentless waves of forced conversions. What we are witnessing today is not just a crime against Hindus—it is a crime against humanity. Innocent people were brutally tortured, tormented, and massacred for one simple reason: they were Hindus.”

He further emphasized:

“Terrorism is a global threat. It knows no boundaries—no nationality, no religion. The entire world must unite to reject it completely. There can be no justification for terror—anywhere, anytime, under any circumstance. Humanity must stand together against this evil.”

Dr. Piyush C. Agrawal, National Past President of the Association of Indians in America (AIA), former United Nations expert, and retired Superintendent of Schools, issued a strong condemnation of the horrific terrorist attack:

“This is an unprecedented and deeply troubling event. The Government of India must take decisive action and hold Pakistan accountable for fostering such acts of terror. A peaceful and just society cannot coexist with state-sponsored violence.”

He further added:
“It is deeply concerning when extremist interpretations of religion are used to justify violence against others. Misguided ideologies that promote hatred under the guise of faith are dangerous and must be universally rejected. No religion should be misused to promote terrorism or division. It is time for the global community to recognize and confront this threat to peace and humanity.”

Deepak Ganju, founder of the Kashmir Hindu Foundation, stated:
“This is not merely an act of terrorism — this is a systematic genocide of Hindus that began in 1989 and continues to this day. The government of Pakistan bears direct responsibility, as it continues to support and fuel terrorism in Kashmir.

Another key community leader and one of the organizers of the peace rally was Hemant Patel.

Sharing his thoughts, he said,
“I’m a former Chairman of the Asian American Hotel Owners Association and a longtime resident of Miami. As one of the organizers of this rally, my message is simple and urgent—this violence must stop, and it must

stop now. To the people of Pakistan, I ask: how can you continue to live under a regime that offers only despair, breeds hostility, and brings turmoil to your neighbors?

There is hope among the ordinary people of Pakistan, but that hope will only be realized when they stand up against the radical elements within their military—those responsible for exporting cross-border terrorism into Kashmir. This cycle of violence cannot continue. It’s time for action. The world deserves peace, but we must confront those who live and breathe terror. Kashmir has suffered for far too long.”

He added:
“We stand firmly with Prime Minister Modi in this fight against terrorism. We also thank President Trump for his strong statement of solidarity with India and appreciate all nations and individuals who support us at this crucial time.”

In conversations with other protesters, there was a unified condemnation of Pakistan for sheltering and supporting terrorist networks. Many attendees emphasized that the Pahalgam attack deliberately targeted the victims because of their Hindu identity. They called on the global community to take meaningful steps to dismantle terror infrastructure and confront radical ideologies.

The rally mourned the innocent lives lost and served as a powerful platform demanding justice, accountability, and international action. It concluded with a solemn prayer and a one-minute silence to offer moksha—liberation—for the departed souls.

He is the greatest ever tabla player; indeed, his contributions went far beyond his technical mastery; he was a virtuoso, composer, percussionist, and music producer whose influence resonated globally, crossing cultural boundaries.

Born into the world of rhythm and excellent music, as the son of a legendary tabla maestro, Alla Rakha, Hussain started his training in tablas when he was very young under his father’s guidance.

As an artist, Hussain received numerous honors. His efforts paid off as he earned global recognition, winning four Grammy Awards and receiving seven nominations—an incredible achievement that cemented his status as a world music icon. In the U.S., he was conferred the National Heritage Fellowship Award, which is the best award bestowed on traditional U.S. artists.

Hussain’s fame was not merely a thing of awards. His reputation as a tabla player was iconic, as The Guardian described him as the most recognizable exponent of the tabla. The New York Times compared the speed of the fingers to the wings of a hummingbird, highlighting that he played with precision fluidity. His performances were not simply concerts but rhythmic journeys in the Indian genre of classical music, blending in with smooth jazz and world music, rendering a universal appeal.

One of the most important chapters in Hussain’s career was with the world music supergroup Tabla Beat Science, which he founded along with Bill Laswell. He infused Indian classical music with diverse global genres, revitalizing the traditional rhythms and extending his influence far beyond India. His musical explorations extended beyond the realm of world music. He has worked as an associate music director for the Merchant Ivory film Heat and Dust, released in 1983, to name but a few.

Beyond performing, Hussain was a devoted teacher and a passionate advocate for the preservation of Indian classical music. He taught at distinguished institutions such as Princeton and Stanford universities, sharing his passion and knowledge with the next generation of musicians. In recognition of his contributions to music education, the University of Mumbai awarded him an honorary Doctor of Law degree in 2022.

Hussain’s personal life was as culturally rich as his work. He married Antonia Minnecola, a Kathak dancer and teacher, who also handled his career. They have two daughters, Anisa and Isabella, who have pursued creative careers. Anisa is a filmmaker, and Isabella is a dancer in Manhattan. His brothers, Taufiq and Fazal Qureshi, are also accomplished percussionists who continue the family legacy of musical excellence.

The quality of his instruments spoke well of Hussain’s dedication to his craft. His tablas were handcrafted by master tabla maker Haridas Vhatkar, whom he had worked with for more than 18 years. He refrained from performing at private gatherings or corporate events, preferring to focus solely on the music.

Hussain collaborated with artists from around the world, cutting across genres and continents. He frequently performed at the International Jazz Day concerts, including the one in 2016 held by President Obama. He collaborated with artists such as Béla Fleck and Edgar Meyer, pushing the limits of what the tabla could do by incorporating traditional rhythms into jazz, bluegrass, and other genres.

In 2024, Hussain won three Grammy Awards for his work with the fusion band Shakti for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. This was just one of the many triumphs in a career spanning decades and influencing musicians across genres.

Hussain’s legacy also lies not just in the various awards he received but also in the fact that he took Indian classical music out into the world arena, so much so that John McLaughlin called him “the King, whose hands rhythm became magic,” while Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed him as “the true genius who changed and transformed the world of Indian classical music.”

Zakir Hussain died on December 15, 2024, at the age of 73, but still, his legacy inspires music makers all over the globe. His influence persists, ensuring that his mastery of the tabla and significant contributions to music worldwide will endure.

In 2013, a little-known research analyst at Morgan Stanley coined the term “Fragile Five” in reference to the emerging market economies of India along with other four countries. As usual the New York Times without consulting any other economists was quick to report that India has become too dependent on foreign investment to finance their growth ambitions.

But in 2014, something unusual happened. Indian voters overwhelmingly supported the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Narendra Modi, giving them a landslide victory. History was scripted in the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan on the evening of May 26, 2014, as Narendra Modi took oath as the Prime Minister of India after receiving a historic mandate from the people of India.

In Narendra Modi, the people of India see a dynamic, decisive, and development-oriented leader who has emerged as a ray of hope for the dreams and aspirations of a billion Indians. His focus on development, attention to detail, and efforts to bring a qualitative difference in the lives of the poorest of the poor have made Narendra Modi a popular and respected leader across the length and breadth of India.

Fast forward to 2024, Prime Minister Modi delivered what he promised in 2014 to the people of India. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has undergone a significant metamorphosis. This transformation has positioned India as an economic model of hope and opportunity. Over the past decade, the country has evolved from being one of the “Fragile Five” economies to becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing economic powerhouses.

India is setting its sights high with a clear and strategic plan that combines economic reforms, technological advancements, and social programs. This comprehensive approach aims to propel the country to developed nation status by 2047, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of its independence. The ambitious goal is bolstered by India’s current status as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with projections suggesting it will rank among the top three economic powers by 2030. The nation’s robust democratic system and strong international partnerships are considered key factors contributing to this anticipated success.

The significant economic growth observed in the first quarter of the financial year 2023 played a pivotal role in elevating India to the position of the world’s fifth-largest economy. This remarkable progress follows a robust recovery from the economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. India’s nominal GDP, calculated at current market prices, is expected to reach US$ 3.52 trillion in 2023-24, compared to US$ 3.23 trillion recorded in the revised estimates for 2022-23.

Several factors are credited with driving this economic expansion. Strong domestic demand for both consumption and investment goods is a significant contributor, alongside the Indian government’s continued focus on capital expenditure. Data from the first half of FY24 highlight these factors as key drivers of GDP growth. During the January-March 2024 period, India’s exports reached US$ 119.10 billion, with engineering goods, petroleum products, and organic and inorganic chemicals leading as the top three export commodities. Additionally, rising employment opportunities and increasing private consumption, fueled by positive consumer sentiment, are expected to further support GDP growth in the coming months.

The Indian government’s future investments in infrastructure and asset-building projects are expected to be facilitated by several factors. These include tax buoyancy, a streamlined tax system with lower rates, a thorough review and rationalization of the tariff structure, and the digitization of the tax filing process. In the medium term, this increased capital spending is projected to act as a multiplier, further accelerating economic growth. The contact-based services sector, which has shown promise in terms of pent-up demand, is also seen as a potential growth engine.

The current period of global uncertainty and volatility has only strengthened India’s appeal as an attractive investment destination. The record-breaking amounts of capital raised by India-focused funds in 2022 stand as a testament to the strong investor confidence in India’s “Invest in India” narrative. This growing faith in the Indian economy serves as a powerful tailwind propelling the country towards its ambitious goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

Ten years ago, India’s economic path was fraught with uncertainty. The nation faced several weaknesses in its economic structure and was highly susceptible to external economic pressures. However, under the astute guidance of PM Modi’s leadership, India has embarked on a remarkable economic journey. Between 2014 and 2022, India’s GDP has grown at an impressive compound annual growth rate of 5.6%, surpassing the growth rates of many other economies.

This growth has been achieved despite numerous global economic challenges. India has emerged as a beacon of stability and progress, attracting international investment and creating a favorable environment for businesses to expand their operations.

FDI inflows remain strong: Foreign direct investment into India has steadily grown, reaching a cumulative total of US$971.52 billion by December 2023.

Industrial production maintains momentum: India’s industrial sector continues to see growth, with the February 2024 Index of Industrial Production (IIP) reaching 147.2.

ROAD AHEAD

The Indian economy maintained its positive momentum in the first half of the financial year 2023-24 (FY24). This positive outlook is supported by several factors:

Sustained Growth: The economic growth momentum from the first quarter continued into the second quarter. Additionally, high-frequency indicators continued to perform well in July and August of 2023.

Strong External Sector: India’s position in the external sector is comparatively strong, reflecting a positive outlook for economic growth and rising employment rates. This strength is further bolstered by India’s ranking as the 5th largest recipient of foreign direct investment among developed and developing nations in the first quarter of 2022.

Increased Government Investment: The Indian government’s unwavering support for capital expenditure played a key role in the economic story of the first half of FY24. Capital expenditure in 2023-24 witnessed a significant increase of 37.4% compared to the same period in the previous year. This increase was driven by a steep rise in the capital expenditure outlay allocated in the 2023-24 budget. The budget saw a 37.4% increase in capital expenditure outlay, reaching Rs. 10 lakh crore (US$ 120.12 billion) compared to Rs. 7.28 lakh crore (US$ 87.45 billion) in the previous year’s revised estimate.

Shift Towards Higher-Quality Spending: There was a clear shift towards higher-quality spending in the current year. This is reflected in the ratio of revenue expenditure to capital outlay, which decreased by 1.2%. This decrease indicates a prioritization of capital expenditure over revenue expenditure.

Rising Capital Spending: The rise in capital spending can also be attributed to stronger revenue generation. This improved revenue generation stemmed from factors including better tax compliance, increased profitability of companies, and rising economic activity. In February 2024, the Finance Ministry announced the total expenditure for the Interim 2024-25 budget, estimated at US$ 571.64 billion, with US$ 133.27 billion allocated for capital expenditure.

Resilient Growth and Export Performance: India’s economic growth has shown resilience despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic. This resilience is further accentuated by the country’s strong export performance. As of April 2023, India’s merchandise exports witnessed the second-highest YoY growth rate of 8.39%, while service exports saw an even more impressive growth of 29.82%. Additionally, with a reduction in port congestion, supply networks are being restored.

Inflationary Pressures on the Decline: The reduction in CPI-C inflation observed since June 2022 reflects the positive impact of various measures. By September 2023 (provisional data), CPI-C inflation had fallen to 5.02%, down from 7.01% in June 2022. This decline in inflation can be attributed to a combination of factors, including proactive government actions, flexible monetary policy, and a softening of global commodity prices and supply-chain bottlenecks. Overall, inflationary pressures in India appear to be on a downward trend.

It’s time for Morgan Stanley to revise their 2013 economic prediction and elevate the Indian economy from the “fragile five” to “the top five”. I am not holding my breath for the New York time to report this positive change in India’s economy.

On August 15, 2024, India will celebrate its 78th year of independence from the shackles of the British evil empire. This milestone is a testament to the nation’s resilience, determination, and progress. Over the past 78 years, India has transformed from a newly independent country struggling with poverty and illiteracy to a global powerhouse in various fields.

From the economy to foreign policy to education, let’s look into India’s success in several spheres.

Economic Growth and Development

One of India’s most significant achievements is its economic growth. In 1947, India’s economy was primarily agrarian, with limited industrialization. Today, India is the world’s fifth-largest economy by nominal GDP and the third-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). This remarkable metamorphosis, driven by the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, has established India as a leading example of economic hope and opportunity.

Through a strategic combination of economic reforms, cutting-edge technological advancements, and social initiatives, India is meticulously planning a path towards achieving the status of a developed economy by the year 2047, a significant milestone coinciding with the centenary of its independence.

The following economic indicators clearly show that nothing is going to stop India from becoming a developed economy by the year 2047, the world’s third largest economy well before 2030, and the second largest by 2050.

Liberalization and Reforms

The economic liberalization of 1991 marked a turning point for India. The government implemented structural reforms, reducing trade barriers and encouraging foreign direct investment (FDI). These reforms unleashed India’s entrepreneurial spirit, leading to rapid economic growth, increased foreign investment, and the rise of a robust private sector.

Technological and industrial advancements

India has made significant strides in technology and industrialization. The country is now a global hub for information technology (IT) services, with cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad becoming renowned IT centers. Indian IT companies such as Infosys, TCS, and Wipro are leaders in the global market. Additionally, India has a burgeoning startup ecosystem, with numerous unicorns emerging in various sectors.

Agricultural Advancements

“Agriculture remains a vital part of India’s economy, and the country has made substantial progress in this sector. The Green Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s introduced high-yielding varieties of seeds, modern irrigation techniques, and improved agricultural practices.”

This revolution transformed India from a food-deficient nation into one of the world’s largest grain producers.

Scientific and Spatial Exploration

India’s achievements in science and space exploration are commendable. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has made significant contributions to space technology. Notable achievements include the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), which made India the first country to successfully reach Mars on its first attempt, and the Chandrayaan missions, which have advanced lunar exploration.

Healthcare

India has made remarkable progress in healthcare since independence. The eradication of smallpox and polio stands as a testament to the country’s commitment to public health. The National Health Mission and the Ayushman Bharat Scheme are significant steps towards providing accessible healthcare to all citizens. Additionally, India is a global leader in the pharmaceutical industry, supplying affordable medicines and vaccines worldwide.

Education and Research

India has made significant strides in education. The literacy rate has increased from around 12% in 1947 to over 74% in 2021. Globally recognized for their excellence, the country boasts a vast network of educational institutions, including prestigious IITs, IIMs, and AIIMS.

The emphasis on research and innovation has led to breakthroughs in various fields, including medicine, biotechnology, and information technology.

Indian scientists and researchers have contributed to global knowledge, earning accolades and recognition worldwide.

Social Progress and Inclusivity

Efforts to promote inclusivity and reduce disparities have marked India’s journey towards social progress. The country has made significant strides in improving gender equality and empowering women. The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign, launched in 2015, aims to address gender imbalances and promote the education and welfare of girls.

Efforts to uplift marginalized communities through affirmative action and welfare schemes have contributed to social justice. The implementation of the Right to Education Act, which guarantees free and compulsory education for children, reflects India’s commitment to inclusive development.

Cultural Renaissance and Global Influence

India’s rich cultural heritage has gained global recognition. Yoga and Ayurveda, ancient practices rooted in Indian tradition, have found acceptance and popularity worldwide.

In 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, following a proposal by Prime Minister Modi.

“Let us use the power of yoga, not only to be healthy and happy, but also to be kind to ourselves and to each other,” Modi told a gathering of yoga devotees seated on yellow mats on the north lawn of the U.N.

Countries worldwide recognize and observe the International Day of Yoga, highlighting India’s cultural diplomacy and soft power. In 2023, more than 190 countries participated in the celebrations, including mass yoga sessions, educational events, and other activities to promote the benefits of yoga. The day’s goal is to raise awareness of yoga’s holistic benefits and promote its practice globally.

Infrastructure Development

“Infrastructure development has been a key focus for India. The construction of a vast network of roads, highways, and expressways has improved connectivity across the country. The Golden Quadrilateral and Bharatmala projects have enhanced road infrastructure, facilitating trade and commerce.”

The expansion of the railway network, including the introduction of high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat Express, has revolutionized transportation. The development of metro rail systems in major cities has addressed urban transportation challenges, providing efficient and eco-friendly solutions.

Political Stability and Democracy

India, the world’s largest democracy, has maintained political stability despite its diversity. The country has successfully conducted numerous free and fair elections, ensuring a smooth transfer of power. The democratic framework has enabled the participation of various political parties and voices, contributing to the nation’s vibrant political discourse.

A New India on the Global Stage

Historically, the world has viewed India through a lens of self-assured rhetoric. However, a transformative shift has occurred. Today, people recognize India not just as a nation with strong convictions but also as a responsible global partner. While steadfastly rooted in its own cultural and philosophical bedrock, India is demonstrating a resolute commitment to its international obligations.

New Delhi’s increasingly proactive stance on the world stage underscores this evolution. The nation is no longer content with merely adhering to established global norms; it aspires to actively shape them. Prime Minister Modi’s dynamic leadership has catalyzed this ambition, propelling India towards a more prominent global role. Indian foreign policy has deftly seized the opportunity presented by the changing geopolitical landscape.

In the past decade, a remarkable metamorphosis has taken place. A nation eager to meaningfully contribute to global governance has replaced the once-perceived “perpetual naysayer.” India’s evolving image is that of a constructive partner, willing to shoulder its share of responsibilities in building a better world.

The list below demonstrates India’s leading position on the international scene and its commitment to putting its own interests first. It also displays India’s foreign policy independence.

India has maintained a resolute and independent stance against Western nations by preserving neutrality in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, despite facing immense pressure from the Western world.

“India has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to national security by being the sole country to ban TikTok and other Chinese applications deemed a threat to its sovereignty, showcasing a prioritization of domestic interests.”

To safeguard its citizens from oil shortages and long queues, similar to those experienced by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, India has strategically purchased Russian oil at discounted prices. While domestic fuel prices have been relatively high, they have remained stable for over two years.

India’s decision to acquire Rafale fighter jets from France instead of the US-made F-35s has resulted in significant cost savings and the acquisition of superior technology aligned with India’s specific needs. This choice was influenced by the US’s unreliability as a technology transfer partner and its history of prioritizing domestic interests (America First policy). A prime example is the US’s refusal to share GPS technology with India during the 1999 Kargil War while providing it to Pakistan.

India’s journey to the T20 World Cup 2024 final was nothing short of remarkable. Let’s relive their path to glory, one match at a time:

Ireland

The 2024 T20 World Cup began on a high note for India. Their opening match against Ireland, played on June 5th at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, resulted in a convincing eight-wicket victory.

Ireland, who chose to bat first, were restricted to a meager total of 96 runs. This was primarily due to a dominant performance by the Indian fast bowling attack. Hardik Pandya emerged as the wrecker-in-chief, claiming three wickets in his bowling spell. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh provided excellent support, picking up two wickets each.

Chasing a relatively modest target of 97 runs, India secured a swift victory within 12.2 overs. The batting duo of Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant played instrumental roles in this win. Sharma struck a well-paced 52 runs off 37 balls, while Pant provided a quickfire knock of 36 runs from just 26 deliveries. Their aggressive batting ensured India chased down the target with minimal difficulty

Pakistan

In a tense and low-scoring encounter dominated by the bowling attacks, the Indian cricket team led by Rohit Sharma emerged victorious against their arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9th in New York.

Pakistan called the coin toss correctly and opted to field first. Their decision seemed justified as the Indian batsmen struggled against the Pakistani pace attack. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, both young and fiery quicks, ran through the Indian batting order, taking three wickets each. The only resistance for India came from the in-form wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant, who managed a fighting 42 runs off 31 balls. With the rest of the batting lineup failing to get going, India were bundled out for a meager 119 runs.

Despite the low score on the board, the Indian bowlers did a commendable job in defending the total. The initial overs were a tight affair, with Pakistan batting cautiously and the Indian pacers struggling to find breakthroughs. However, the tide turned in the latter half of the innings. Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh, India’s pace spearheads, rose to the occasion. Bumrah delivered a lethal spell, picking up 3 wickets for just 14 runs. Pandya and Arshdeep chipped in with crucial wickets as well, taking 2 and 1 wickets respectively. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel also played his part, claiming a wicket for just 11 runs. With some disciplined bowling and a collective effort, the Indian bowlers restricted Pakistan to 113 runs, falling short of the target by a narrow margin of 6 runs.

USA

The Indian cricket team secured a dominant victory against the USA, one of the co-hosts of the tournament, by a margin of seven wickets. The match took place on June 12th at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

Arshdeep Singh’s bowling performance was a key factor in India’s win. He delivered an exceptional spell, taking a staggering four wickets while conceding only nine runs in his four overs. This stellar bowling effort restricted the USA team to a modest total of 110 runs on the board, with only eight wickets remaining after their 20 overs.

The Indian batting innings started with a slight hiccup. Saurabh Netravalkar, the USA bowler, posed a significant challenge by dismissing both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two of India’s most experienced batsmen, within the third over of the chase. However, the Indian batting line-up displayed resilience. Suryakumar Yadav played a crucial role in stabilizing the innings, scoring a well-paced fifty off just 49 balls. Shivam Dube also provided valuable support with a knock of 31 runs in 35 balls. These vital contributions from Yadav and Dube ensured India reached the target comfortably, with ten balls remaining in their innings.

This victory came after India’s previous match against Canada was abandoned due to rain. Despite the washout, India’s performance throughout the group stage was commendable. They finished at the top of Group A in the tournament, accumulating a total of seven points from their four completed matches. This win against the USA secured their qualification for the Super Eights stage of the competition.

Super Eights

Afghanistan

The T20 World Cup moved from the United States to the beautiful Caribbean islands for the Super Eights stage. India kicked off their campaign on June 20th, facing Afghanistan in the opening match of Group 1. The venue for this clash was the historic Kensington Oval in Barbados.

India’s batting performance was powered by a spectacular innings from Suryakumar Yadav. He blazed his way to a score of 53 runs in just 28 balls, showcasing his explosive batting style. Valuable contributions also came from Hardik Pandya (32 runs in 24 balls) and Axar Patel (12 runs in a quickfire 6 balls). Thanks to this collective effort, India set a challenging target of 181 runs for Afghanistan to chase.

Unfortunately for Afghanistan, their chase never really got going. The Indian bowling attack was disciplined and effective. Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah, India’s pace spearheads, shared six wickets between them, taking three wickets each. Kuldeep Yadav, the wily spinner, also chipped in with two wickets. The Afghan batting line-up crumbled under pressure, eventually being dismissed for 134 runs. This resulted in a convincing 47-run victory for India, giving them a strong start in the Super Eights stage.

Bangladesh

The Indian cricket team continued their winning streak in the Super Eights stage of the T20 World Cup with another emphatic victory over Bangladesh on June 22nd at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

Rohit Sharma got India off to a flying start with a quickfire knock of 23 runs from just 11 balls. Virat Kohli (37 runs in 28 balls), Rishabh Pant (36 runs in 24 balls) and Shivam Dube (34 runs in 24 balls) all chipped in with valuable contributions, playing steady innings to build a strong foundation for the later batsmen.

However, it was Hardik Pandya who stole the show with a blistering knock of 50 runs from only 27 balls. His aggressive batting propelled India to a formidable total of 196/5 at the end of their innings.

Bangladesh’s chase for the target never really got going. The Indian bowlers, nicknamed the Men in Blue, were disciplined and restricted their opponents throughout the innings. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming three wickets. Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah also impressed, taking two wickets each. Bangladesh eventually fell short by 50 runs, mustering only 146/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

This win was crucial for India as it put them in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament. They had earlier defeated Ireland, Pakistan, USA, and Afghanistan in the group stage, with their match against Canada being washed out. Bangladesh, on the other hand, suffered their second defeat in the Super Eights stage, having previously lost to Australia.

Australia

In a highly anticipated rematch of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 Final, India turned the tables on Australia, securing a convincing victory and a place in the semi-finals. The match took place at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, where Rohit Sharma stole the show with a blistering knock of 92 runs off just 41 balls. His fiery innings provided the foundation for India’s strong total.

Suryakumar Yadav provided valuable support to Sharma, smashing a quickfire 31 runs off only 16 balls. Together, their aggressive batting display propelled India to a challenging target of 206 runs for the Australian team.

Australia’s chase began brightly, with Travis Head playing a fighting knock of 76 runs in 43 balls. Head’s intent threatened to take the game away from India once again, bringing back memories of Australia’s World Cup victory. However, the Indian bowlers rose to the occasion, with Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav delivering crucial spells. Singh scalped three wickets for 37 runs, while Yadav picked up two wickets for just 24 runs. Their combined efforts restricted the flow of Australian runs and prevented them from building dangerous partnerships.

Ultimately, the Indian bowling attack proved too strong for the Australian batsmen, who fell short of the target by 24 runs. With this win, India not only avenged their World Cup defeat but also booked their spot in the semi-finals, putting them one step closer to potentially clinching the championship title.

England

The 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final was a bitter pill to swallow for Indian fans. England dominated the match, coasting to a comfortable 10-wicket victory. But how the tide turned in 2024! The Indian team exacted sweet revenge at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, completely dismantling the English batting order and securing a convincing 68-run win.

Choosing to bat first, India laid a solid foundation for their total. Rohit Sharma, the experienced opener, anchored the innings with a well-paced 57 runs off 39 balls. Suryakumar Yadav, known for his aggressive batting, provided a quickfire knock of 47 runs from just 36 deliveries. These crucial contributions propelled India to a competitive total of 172 runs.

Defending this target, the Indian spin attack emerged as the heroes of the match. Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel weaved their magic, taking three wickets each and restricting the English batsmen. Jasprit Bumrah, never to be outdone, chipped in with two crucial wickets as well. The English batting line-up crumbled under the pressure, eventually being bowled out for a meager 103 runs in just 16.4 overs.

This victory for India was a complete turnaround from the 2022 defeat. It showcased the team’s resilience and their ability to bounce back stronger. The contributions of Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav at the top of the order, coupled with the exceptional bowling performance by the spinners, sealed the win for India and sent them marching into the finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The year 1983 holds a special place in the hearts of Indian cricket fans. It was a year that defied expectations and etched a new chapter in the nation’s cricket history. Prior to this, India’s performance in the World Cup had been underwhelming, with just a single victory in their previous two attempts. The 1983 tournament featured several cricketing powerhouses, and on paper, India seemed like an underdog.

However, the Indian team, led by the charismatic Kapil Dev, had other plans. They fought their way through the tournament, showcasing moments of exceptional skill and unwavering determination. Against all odds, they managed to overcome stronger opponents and secure a place in the coveted finals, held at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground in England.

They faced the mighty West Indies, a team known for its fearsome batting prowess. Setting a modest target of 183 runs, the Indian team knew they had a monumental task ahead of them. Many expected the West Indies batting line-up, a formidable force, to easily chase down the target.

But the Indian bowlers, fueled by an unyielding spirit, displayed remarkable discipline and control. They kept the West Indies batsman in check, making it difficult for them to score freely. The turning point of the match arrived when Kapil Dev, with a sensational leaping catch, dismissed the dangerous Sir Viv Richards. This crucial moment shifted the momentum in India’s favor.

The West Indies batting line-up crumbled under pressure, eventually falling short of the target by a significant margin. India, the underdogs who had surprised everyone throughout the tournament, pulled off a historic victory. A wave of jubilation swept the nation as they crowned themselves World Champions for the first time.

This win transcended the realm of sport. It ignited a newfound passion for cricket in India, transforming it from a popular pastime into a national obsession. The 1983 World Cup victory became more than just a sporting achievement; it was a symbol of resilience, self-belief, and the ability to achieve the seemingly impossible. It was a victory that cemented India’s place on the world cricket stage and inspired generations of future cricketers.

The 2003 ODI World Cup Final: A Dawning Hope Crushed by Australia’s Might

The 2003 Cricket World Cup final marked a significant turning point for Indian cricket. After a period of inconsistency in previous tournaments, the Indian team, under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly, embarked on a remarkable journey that culminated in their second World Cup final appearance since their historic victory in 1983.

A potent blend of experience and youthful exuberance fueled this journey. Seasoned campaigners like Sachin Tendulkar, who emerged as the tournament’s leading run scorer, provided stability and guidance. Meanwhile, young talents like Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath impressed with their pace bowling, forming a formidable bowling attack alongside Srinath.

Their group stage performance was nothing short of dominant. They steamrolled through their opponents, showcasing a renewed spirit and a hunger for success. However, the ultimate challenge awaited them in the form of Australia, the defending champions, at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

The final itself proved to be a one-sided affair. Australian captain Ricky Ponting stole the show with a magnificent unbeaten knock of 140 runs. His innings formed the backbone of a mammoth Australian total of 359 runs for a loss of just two wickets.

Chasing a seemingly insurmountable target, India’s batting faltered from the very beginning. The loss of the talismanic Sachin Tendulkar in the first over itself was a major blow to their morale. While Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid offered some resistance, the Indian batting lineup never truly recovered from the early setbacks. Their innings eventually folded for 234 runs, handing a comprehensive victory to the Australian juggernaut.

The 2003 World Cup final, though a heartbreaking defeat for India, marked a significant step forward for the team. It served as a springboard for their future success, signaling the dawn of a new era in Indian cricket.

The rise of the young guns: India’s triumph in the 2007 T20 World Cup

The year 2007 witnessed a watershed moment in the cricketing world. The inaugural edition of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, held in South Africa, ushered in a new era for the sport, one characterized by fast-paced action, explosive batting, and innovative bowling strategies. This tournament also proved to be a turning point for Indian cricket.

Just a few months prior, the Indian team had suffered a humiliating exit from the ODI World Cup, failing to progress beyond the group stage. This setback led to a significant overhaul, with many senior players opting out of the T20 format. This decision opened the door for a fresh-faced Indian team led by the relatively inexperienced MS Dhoni, later to be known as “Captain Cool.”

While the squad included established names such as Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, and Ajit Agarkar, the core of the team consisted of exciting young talents. This youthful exuberance translated into an electrifying brand of cricket on the field. The team played with a fearless spirit, displaying remarkable skill and determination throughout the tournament. Their dominant performances propelled them on a remarkable journey, culminating in a place in the grand finale.

The final was a nail-biting encounter against arch-rival Pakistan. India, batting first, set a competitive target of 157 runs on the scoreboard. Openers Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma played crucial roles in this effort. Gambhir anchored the innings with a solid 75 runs, while Sharma provided a vital late flourish with a quickfire cameo.

Pakistan’s chase began brightly, but the Indian bowling attack, spearheaded by Irfan Pathan’s three-wicket haul and RP Singh’s decisive spell, managed to restrict their progress. The experienced Misbah-ul-Haq, however, threatened to snatch victory away from India with his late onslaught of powerful shots. However, the young Joginder Sharma bowled the final over of the match, etching it in cricketing folklore. Sharma held his nerve under immense pressure, dismissing Misbah with the penultimate delivery and securing a thrilling five-run victory for India.

The triumph in the 2007 T20 World Cup marked the beginning of a glorious era for Indian cricket. This young team, led by the composed MS Dhoni, captured the imagination of the nation and laid the foundation for a period of sustained dominance in the shortest format of the game.

The 2011 Cricket World Cup: A Night Etched in Indian Memory

The 2011 Cricket World Cup, jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, was a watershed moment for Indian cricket. With the tournament on home soil, the Indian team, led by the enigmatic MS Dhoni, entered the competition as one of the frontrunners. Throughout the tournament, they lived up to that expectation, displaying remarkable consistency. Key victories against cricketing giants Australia in the quarterfinal and arch-rivals Pakistan in the semi-final propelled them towards the ultimate challenge—the final.

The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai set the stage for the grand finale. Sri Lanka, batting first, put up a formidable total of 274 runs, thanks to a magnificent century by Mahela Jayawardene. Chasing this challenging target, India’s start was far from ideal. Virender Sehwag and the legendary Sachin Tendulkar dismissed the openers cheaply, leaving them with a mountain to climb.

However, the Indian batting lineup displayed immense resilience. Gautam Gambhir stood firm, anchoring the innings with a composed knock of 97 runs. But it was the captain, MS Dhoni, who stole the show. With unwavering courage, he delivered a match-winning innings of 91 runs that remained unbeaten. Every Indian cricket fan will forever remember the final act of the drama: Dhoni launching the final ball of the match for a towering six, sending the crowd and the entire nation into a frenzy.

This victory transcended the sport’s boundaries. It marked the culmination of a 28-year-long wait for India to reclaim the coveted Cricket World Cup trophy. It cemented MS Dhoni’s legacy as one of India’s greatest captains, a leader who could deliver under immense pressure. More importantly, it fulfilled the dreams of millions of passionate Indian fans who had yearned for this moment for nearly three decades. The win also served as a fitting tribute to Sachin Tendulkar, the master batsman who was playing in his last World Cup. Indian cricket history will forever remember the 2011 World Cup victory as a golden chapter.

2014 T20 World Cup: A dominant run ends in heartbreak

The 2014 T20 World Cup, held in Bangladesh, witnessed a remarkable journey for the Indian cricket team. They displayed unparalleled dominance throughout the group stages and knockout rounds, leaving a trail of defeated opponents in their wake. Powerhouses such as Pakistan, the West Indies, Australia, and South Africa all fell victim to the Indian team’s might.

A major factor behind India’s success was the phenomenal form of Virat Kohli. Throughout the tournament, he exhibited sublime batting skills, scoring consistently and playing a pivotal role in securing victories. His consistent contributions were a cornerstone of India’s dominant run.

However, despite entering the finals as clear favorites, the dream run for India was destined for a heartbreaking conclusion. Sri Lanka’s bowlers, led by the legendary Lasith Malinga, had other plans. They displayed exceptional planning and strategic brilliance, effectively shutting down the Indian batting line-up. The Sri Lankan bowling attack, spearheaded by Malinga’s pace and guile, restricted every Indian batsman except Kohli. Notably, Yuvraj Singh, a crucial member of the Indian batting order, struggled to score freely.

The 2023 ODI World Cup: A Tale of Redemption and Heartbreak on Home Soil

The 2023 Cricket World Cup, hosted by India, was a thrilling spectacle that kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout the entire tournament. Team India, led by the ever-reliable Rohit Sharma, displayed unmatched dominance. They cruised through the group stages, dismantling their opponents with clinical precision. The memories of the 2019 World Cup semi-final defeat against New Zealand seemed like a distant echo as India comfortably dispatched the Kiwis once again to book their place in the coveted final.

Meanwhile, Australia endured a shaky start to their campaign. Early losses threatened to derail their World Cup dreams. However, the resilient Aussies displayed remarkable grit and determination. They clawed their way back into contention, winning crucial matches and eventually securing their spot in the final against India at the majestic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

A dream finale—a clash between two cricketing giants—was about to unfold. As millions of passionate fans tuned in from around the world, the atmosphere crackled with anticipation. India, batting first, opted for a cautious approach. While they weren’t able to post a mammoth total, contributions from the top order, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul, ensured a respectable score of 240 runs on the board.

Australia’s chase began in a tense manner. The Indian bowlers struck early, claiming crucial wickets and putting the Aussies under immense pressure. The odds seemed stacked against them. However, this is when the hero of the tournament emerged. Travis Head, with an inning for the ages, defied the Indian attack. He played a scintillating knock, scoring a staggering 137 runs off just 120 deliveries. His single-handed knock shifted the momentum in Australia’s favour and steered them towards a remarkable victory.

Cricketing history will forever mark this match. It was a story of redemption for Australia, who bounced back from a shaky start to claim their sixth ODI World Cup title. For India, it was a heartbreaking end to a dominant tournament. They will rue the missed opportunities and the valiant knock by Travis Head that snatched victory from their grasps.

The match was a tense back-and-forth battle, with momentum shifting rapidly between the two sides. Despite setting a challenging target of 177 runs, the Indian bowlers displayed remarkable composure under pressure. They managed to overcome a fiery spell from Heinrich Klaasen in the middle overs, ultimately defending their total successfully. This triumph not only marks India’s second T20 World Cup victory but also brings an end to their 11-year-long wait for a major ICC trophy.
The post From Underdogs to Champions: India’s World Cup Finals History (1983–2024) first appeared on Desh-Videsh Media reaches 1.5 Millions+ Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshi, and Indo-Caribbeans..

The 29th of June, 2024, will forever be etched in the memories of Indian cricket fans. After 13 long years, India emerged victorious in the World Cup, defeating South Africa in a thrilling final. The celebrations erupted not only in Barbados, where the match took place, but across the entire world.

“India’s journey to the championship was nothing short of remarkable. They started strong in Group A, winning all their matches except for one that was abandoned due to rain. This dominance continued through the Super 8 Stage, where they secured victories against formidable opponents like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Australia.”

The highly anticipated semi-final against England held special significance. In the 2022 World Cup, England had thrashed India by a massive margin. This time, however, India turned the tables completely, registering a resounding 68-run win.

Even before the first ball was bowled, the streets surrounding the stadium overflowed with a sea of blue shirts. Indian fans, along with a few neutrals and a rare South African supporter, painted the town blue, their unwavering faith in their team palpable.

The final against South Africa, marking their first-ever World Cup final appearance, started on a shaky note for India. Captain Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant fell early, followed by Suryakumar Yadav soon after. This left India in a precarious position at 34-3.

Few players get to script a perfect farewell, and Kohli’s was truly legendary. Despite entering the final with a meager 75 runs from the entire tournament, he exploded with a match-winning 76, silencing his critics and proving his worth as a crucial anchor for the team.

Just when things seemed bleak, a masterstroke decision saw Axar Patel join the ever-reliable Virat Kohli at the crease. This duo embarked on a crucial 72-run partnership, reviving India’s hopes and bringing stability to the innings. Kohli, in his signature style, went on to score a magnificent 76 before his dismissal.

Defending their total of 176, India’s bowling attack started strong. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh struck early wickets, putting South Africa on the back foot. However, a crucial partnership between Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs threatened to shift the momentum.

Early wickets for India had the crowd roaring, but South Africa fought back with a strong partnership between Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs. However, Axar Patel’s clever bowling sent Stubbs packing, paving the way for the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen. Klaasen’s brutal hitting brought South Africa back into the game, reducing the target to a manageable 30 runs off 30 balls.

However, Pandya silenced the doubters with a crucial wicket, dismissing the in-form Klaasen, and re-igniting Indian hopes.

Axar Patel broke the crucial partnership, but Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller kept South Africa in the hunt with a quickfire partnership. Just when it seemed South Africa was on course for victory, the tide turned again. Jasprit Bumrah’s economical 16th over and Hardik Pandya’s wicket of Klaasen put India back in control.

The final over was a nail-biter. With David Miller needing just a few runs for victory, Hardik Pandya bowled a full toss. Miller struck it towards the boundary, but a sensational athletic effort by Suryakumar Yadav saved the day. Sprinting from long off, Yadav leaped and plucked the ball in mid-air. Realizing he was going over the boundary, he threw the ball back into play while airborne before completing a stunning catch. This moment of brilliance sealed India’s victory.
