But Independence Day is more than a remembrance of struggle. It is a celebration of how far India has come—from a fledgling post-colonial state to a vibrant democracy and a rising global power.

This year’s celebration holds special significance. India is not only the world’s largest democracy but also its fastest-growing major economy. Its influence spans space exploration, digital innovation, global diplomacy, and soft power through culture and values. And the Indian diaspora, particularly Indian-Americans, has played a pivotal role in elevating India’s voice on the global stage.

Let us delve into the rich history of India’s independence struggle, highlight key achievements over nearly eight decades, and examine the significant contributions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014, a period marked by accelerated growth and increased global recognition.

The Dawn of a Nation: India’s Independence Struggle (Pre-1947)

The history of India’s independence struggle is a saga of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering determination. While the formal British rule began in 1858 after the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 (often considered the First War of Indian Independence), the seeds of resistance were sown much earlier. The British East India Company’s exploitative policies and cultural subjugation fueled simmering discontent, leading to numerous local uprisings.

The late 19th century witnessed the emergence of organized nationalism. The Indian National Congress (INC), founded in 1885, initially sought greater representation and administrative reforms but gradually evolved into a powerful mass movement advocating for complete self-rule. The seven decades following independence were a period of nation-building, marked by remarkable achievements against daunting odds:

• Democratic Resilience and Stability: Despite predictions of its fragmentation, India sustained itself as the world’s largest democracy. Regular elections, peaceful transfers of power, and a vibrant multi-party system became hallmarks of its political landscape. This commitment to democratic values, even through challenging periods, earned global respect.
• Green Revolution and Food Security: From a state of chronic food shortages and reliance on foreign aid, India achieved self-sufficiency in food grain production by the 1970s through the Green Revolution. This transformation, driven by high-yielding varieties of seeds, improved irrigation, and modern agricultural practices, was critical in averting widespread famine and ensuring food security for its burgeoning population.
• Foundations of Space and Nuclear Prowess: India embarked on ambitious scientific endeavors. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), established in 1969, laid the groundwork for a robust space program. India also developed indigenous nuclear technology, demonstrating its scientific prowess with peaceful nuclear explosions (like Pokhran-I in 1974), establishing a credible minimum deterrence capability.

In the last decade, India has made tremendous strides in space exploration and defense, proving its capability as a rising global power—not just in economics and diplomacy, but also in science, technology, and national security.

Following the remarkable success of Operation Sindoor, India’s strategic defense capabilities have entered a new era. This bold military rescue mission not only showcased India’s tactical brilliance but also reinforced its rapid-response capabilities and global reach. The operation was executed using Made-in-India military hardware, including indigenous aircraft, surveillance drones, and communication systems—all developed under the ambitious Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. From the Tejas fighter jet to the Arjun battle tank and Astra missiles, India is now manufacturing advanced defense equipment that rivals global counterparts.

On the space front, India continues to make headlines. After the celebrated Chandrayaan-3 lunar landing, the Gaganyaan mission—India’s first crewed space flight—is set to launch soon, placing Indian astronauts in orbit. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has also ramped up international collaborations, launching satellites for dozens of countries while expanding its own constellation of Earth observation and navigation satellites.

Together, these achievements reflect a confident, capable India, rooted in indigenous innovation and global ambition. For Indian-Americans, watching India emerge as a leader in space and defense isn’t just a matter of national pride—it’s a sign that the motherland is securing its rightful place among the world’s superpowers, with strength in both vision and action.

Digital India and Make in India: Building a Self-Reliant Future

Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has undergone a digital and manufacturing revolution that has transformed the daily lives of over a billion citizens and inspired global admiration. Two flagship initiatives—Digital India and Make in India—have reshaped India’s economic and technological landscape.

At the heart of Digital India lies the success of UPI (Unified Payments Interface), which has revolutionized how Indians transact. From small tea vendors in remote villages to major retail chains in urban cities, UPI has become the de facto digital payment standard. With over 10 billion transactions monthly, UPI is not only used across India but is now being adopted in countries like Nepal, Bhutan, the UAE, Singapore, and France. This seamless, real-time payment system—developed in India—is now a model for financial inclusion worldwide.

Meanwhile, the Make in India movement has boosted domestic production across sectors—defense, electronics, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and more. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when global supply chains collapsed, India surprised the world by producing its own vaccines (Covaxin and Covishield) and becoming the pharmacy of the world, supplying doses to over 100 countries.

From mobile phones to medical equipment, India is now manufacturing goods at scale, creating jobs, reducing imports, and building export strength. For Indian-Americans, these achievements symbolize a resurgent, self-reliant India—an India that doesn’t just dream big but builds, innovates, and leads on the global stage.

Prime Minister Modi’s Unique Leadership Status:

Beyond policy achievements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership itself has garnered notable recognition. He has become the second longest-serving Prime Minister of India as of July 2025 (surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru’s uninterrupted tenure from 1947 to 1964, with Indira Gandhi holding the longest cumulative tenure). Furthermore, he has consistently maintained one of the highest approval ratings among world leaders, according to surveys by international firms like US-based Morning Consult. This sustained high approval rating, observed over several years, reflects significant domestic popularity and a strong mandate. His diplomatic engagements and presence on the global stage have also contributed to India’s enhanced international profile.

Diplomatic Emergence: From Non-Alignment to Leadership

India has transitioned from a passive player to a strategic influencer in global politics. As a member of the G20, BRICS, the Quad, and the United Nations Security Council (as a rotating member), India’s voice carries increasing weight.

India is also a first responder in humanitarian crises, a leader in pharmaceutical exports, and a pioneer in digital diplomacy. In 2023, India hosted the G20 summit with a focus on “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” echoing the ancient Vedic mantra Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

India’s foreign policy now reflects confidence, cooperation, and cultural pride—a model admired by emerging economies and respected by superpowers.

The Power of the Indian Diaspora:

A significant, though often understated, contributor to India’s growing global stature and economic strength is its vast diaspora. Numbering over 32 million people worldwide, the Indian diaspora maintains strong ties to their homeland. 

A remarkable testament to the strength of the Indian diaspora, especially Indian‑Americans, is the record-breaking amount of money sent back home. In fiscal year 2024–25, overseas Indians remitted a staggering $135.46 billion, marking a 14% increase from the previous year and the highest ever recorded. Indian‑Americans—who account for nearly 28% of India’s remittance inflows—have been a key driver of this surge, helping to support families, finance education, launch businesses, and fuel development projects across India. These personal transfers now rival and even exceed India’s foreign direct investment receipts, offering a stable and powerful source of external financing. For Indian‑Americans, sending money home is more than remittance—it’s a bridge of empathy, investment, and shared progress.

The Tricolor Across Oceans

As the Tiranga (tricolor) flutters from the Red Fort in Delhi to city halls and community centers in Atlanta, Chicago, and San Jose, it reminds us that freedom is not a finish line—it is a living flame.

India@78 is more than a milestone. It is a mirror to the past, a celebration of the present, and a launchpad for the future.

Global Indians, Global Citizens

As we celebrate India@78, it’s clear that the story of India is also the story of its people—within the nation and across its vast diaspora. Independence gave India political freedom, but it also launched a spiritual and civilizational journey of self-discovery, reinvention, and global service.

India’s Potential as a Vishva Guru: A Teacher to the World

As India celebrates 78 years of independence, a powerful idea is gaining momentum—India as “Vishva Guru,” or Teacher to the World. This ancient concept, rooted in India’s civilizational wisdom, envisions the nation not merely as a political or economic power, but as a moral and spiritual guide for the modern world.

India has always offered more than material wealth. It has given the world timeless philosophies: Ahimsa (non-violence), Dharma (righteous living), Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family), and Yoga—ideas that address humanity’s deepest needs in an age of conflict, division, and unrest.

In a world seeking inner peace and sustainability, India’s teachings of balance, non-attachment, mindfulness, and universal harmony are more relevant than ever. From the Bhagavad Gita to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, from Ayurveda to Vedic math, India’s contributions span mind, body, and spirit.

On May 4, 2025, over 100 Hindu Americans gathered at Bayfront Park in Miami, Florida, to peacefully protest the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir.

Organized by members of the local Hindu community, the demonstration sought justice for the innocent lives lost and called on global leaders to designate Pakistan as a state sponsor of terrorism. Protesters carried powerful placards with messages like “Silence is not peace; silence is surrender” and “Dharma protects those who protect it,” voicing their collective outrage against the targeted violence.

The rally stood as a strong, united front against terrorism and highlighted the continued persecution of Hindus in the region. Community leaders emphasized the urgent need for global solidarity in defending human rights and holding those responsible accountable. The event concluded with a solemn yet hopeful call for lasting peace, justice for the victims, and an end to terror-driven atrocities.

Raj Shah of Desh-Videsh Media Group spoke with several local leaders during the event. Here’s what they had to say:

A respected Hindu leader, Dr. Vinod Patel, founding trustee of the South Florida Hindu Temple, delivered a powerful message:

“Namaste. I’m Vinod Patel. As a proud and committed Hindu, I believe the time has come for our community to rise, stop remaining in the shadows, and boldly speak out against violence. We must no longer remain silent.”

Dr. Chander Shayker, also a founding trustee of the South Florida Hindu Temple and a native of Kashmir, offered a heartfelt reflection:

“Our suffering spans over 2,500 years, marked by relentless waves of forced conversions. What we are witnessing today is not just a crime against Hindus—it is a crime against humanity. Innocent people were brutally tortured, tormented, and massacred for one simple reason: they were Hindus.”

He further emphasized:

“Terrorism is a global threat. It knows no boundaries—no nationality, no religion. The entire world must unite to reject it completely. There can be no justification for terror—anywhere, anytime, under any circumstance. Humanity must stand together against this evil.”

Dr. Piyush C. Agrawal, National Past President of the Association of Indians in America (AIA), former United Nations expert, and retired Superintendent of Schools, issued a strong condemnation of the horrific terrorist attack:

“This is an unprecedented and deeply troubling event. The Government of India must take decisive action and hold Pakistan accountable for fostering such acts of terror. A peaceful and just society cannot coexist with state-sponsored violence.”

He further added:
“It is deeply concerning when extremist interpretations of religion are used to justify violence against others. Misguided ideologies that promote hatred under the guise of faith are dangerous and must be universally rejected. No religion should be misused to promote terrorism or division. It is time for the global community to recognize and confront this threat to peace and humanity.”

Deepak Ganju, founder of the Kashmir Hindu Foundation, stated:
“This is not merely an act of terrorism — this is a systematic genocide of Hindus that began in 1989 and continues to this day. The government of Pakistan bears direct responsibility, as it continues to support and fuel terrorism in Kashmir.

Another key community leader and one of the organizers of the peace rally was Hemant Patel.

Sharing his thoughts, he said,
“I’m a former Chairman of the Asian American Hotel Owners Association and a longtime resident of Miami. As one of the organizers of this rally, my message is simple and urgent—this violence must stop, and it must

 stop now. To the people of Pakistan, I ask: how can you continue to live under a regime that offers only despair, breeds hostility, and brings turmoil to your neighbors?

There is hope among the ordinary people of Pakistan, but that hope will only be realized when they stand up against the radical elements within their military—those responsible for exporting cross-border terrorism into Kashmir. This cycle of violence cannot continue. It’s time for action. The world deserves peace, but we must confront those who live and breathe terror. Kashmir has suffered for far too long.”

He added:
“We stand firmly with Prime Minister Modi in this fight against terrorism. We also thank President Trump for his strong statement of solidarity with India and appreciate all nations and individuals who support us at this crucial time.”

In conversations with other protesters, there was a unified condemnation of Pakistan for sheltering and supporting terrorist networks. Many attendees emphasized that the Pahalgam attack deliberately targeted the victims because of their Hindu identity. They called on the global community to take meaningful steps to dismantle terror infrastructure and confront radical ideologies.

The rally mourned the innocent lives lost and served as a powerful platform demanding justice, accountability, and international action. It concluded with a solemn prayer and a one-minute silence to offer moksha—liberation—for the departed souls.

Hussain’s fame was not merely a thing of awards. His reputation as a tabla player was iconic, as The Guardian described him as the most recognizable exponent of the tabla. The New York Times compared the speed of the fingers to the wings of a hummingbird, highlighting that he played with precision fluidity. His performances were not simply concerts but rhythmic journeys in the Indian genre of classical music, blending in with smooth jazz and world music, rendering a universal appeal.

One of the most important chapters in Hussain’s career was with the world music supergroup Tabla Beat Science, which he founded along with Bill Laswell. He infused Indian classical music with diverse global genres, revitalizing the traditional rhythms and extending his influence far beyond India. His musical explorations extended beyond the realm of world music. He has worked as an associate music director for the Merchant Ivory film Heat and Dust, released in 1983, to name but a few.

Beyond performing, Hussain was a devoted teacher and a passionate advocate for the preservation of Indian classical music. He taught at distinguished institutions such as Princeton and Stanford universities, sharing his passion and knowledge with the next generation of musicians. In recognition of his contributions to music education, the University of Mumbai awarded him an honorary Doctor of Law degree in 2022.

Hussain’s personal life was as culturally rich as his work. He married Antonia Minnecola, a Kathak dancer and teacher, who also handled his career. They have two daughters, Anisa and Isabella, who have pursued creative careers. Anisa is a filmmaker, and Isabella is a dancer in Manhattan. His brothers, Taufiq and Fazal Qureshi, are also accomplished percussionists who continue the family legacy of musical excellence.

The quality of his instruments spoke well of Hussain’s dedication to his craft. His tablas were handcrafted by master tabla maker Haridas Vhatkar, whom he had worked with for more than 18 years. He refrained from performing at private gatherings or corporate events, preferring to focus solely on the music.

Hussain collaborated with artists from around the world, cutting across genres and continents. He frequently performed at the International Jazz Day concerts, including the one in 2016 held by President Obama. He collaborated with artists such as Béla Fleck and Edgar Meyer, pushing the limits of what the tabla could do by incorporating traditional rhythms into jazz, bluegrass, and other genres.

In 2024, Hussain won three Grammy Awards for his work with the fusion band Shakti for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. This was just one of the many triumphs in a career spanning decades and influencing musicians across genres.

Hussain’s legacy also lies not just in the various awards he received but also in the fact that he took Indian classical music out into the world arena, so much so that John McLaughlin called him “the King, whose hands rhythm became magic,” while Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed him as “the true genius who changed and transformed the world of Indian classical music.”

Zakir Hussain died on December 15, 2024, at the age of 73, but still, his legacy inspires music makers all over the globe. His influence persists, ensuring that his mastery of the tabla and significant contributions to music worldwide will endure.

In 2013,  a little-known research analyst at Morgan Stanley coined the term “Fragile Five” in reference to the emerging market economies of India along with other four countries. As usual the New York Times without consulting any other economists was quick to report that India has become too dependent on foreign investment to finance their growth ambitions.

But in 2014, something unusual happened. Indian voters overwhelmingly supported the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Narendra Modi, giving them a landslide victory. History was scripted in the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan on the evening of May 26, 2014, as Narendra Modi took oath as the Prime Minister of India after receiving a historic mandate from the people of India.

In Narendra Modi, the people of India see a dynamic, decisive, and development-oriented leader who has emerged as a ray of hope for the dreams and aspirations of a billion Indians. His focus on development, attention to detail, and efforts to bring a qualitative difference in the lives of the poorest of the poor have made Narendra Modi a popular and respected leader across the length and breadth of India.

Fast forward to 2024,  Prime Minister Modi delivered what he promised in 2014 to the people of India. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has undergone a significant metamorphosis. This transformation has positioned India as an economic model of hope and opportunity. Over the past decade, the country has evolved from being one of the “Fragile Five” economies to becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing economic powerhouses.

India is setting its sights high with a clear and strategic plan that combines economic reforms, technological advancements, and social programs. This comprehensive approach aims to propel the country to developed nation status by 2047, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of its independence. The ambitious goal is bolstered by India’s current status as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with projections suggesting it will rank among the top three economic powers by 2030. The nation’s robust democratic system and strong international partnerships are considered key factors contributing to this anticipated success.

The significant economic growth observed in the first quarter of the financial year 2023 played a pivotal role in elevating India to the position of the world’s fifth-largest economy. This remarkable progress follows a robust recovery from the economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. India’s nominal GDP, calculated at current market prices, is expected to reach US$ 3.52 trillion in 2023-24, compared to US$ 3.23 trillion recorded in the revised estimates for 2022-23.

Several factors are credited with driving this economic expansion. Strong domestic demand for both consumption and investment goods is a significant contributor, alongside the Indian government’s continued focus on capital expenditure. Data from the first half of FY24 highlight these factors as key drivers of GDP growth. During the January-March 2024 period, India’s exports reached US$ 119.10 billion, with engineering goods, petroleum products, and organic and inorganic chemicals leading as the top three export commodities. Additionally, rising employment opportunities and increasing private consumption, fueled by positive consumer sentiment, are expected to further support GDP growth in the coming months.

The Indian government’s future investments in infrastructure and asset-building projects are expected to be facilitated by several factors. These include tax buoyancy, a streamlined tax system with lower rates, a thorough review and rationalization of the tariff structure, and the digitization of the tax filing process. In the medium term, this increased capital spending is projected to act as a multiplier, further accelerating economic growth. The contact-based services sector, which has shown promise in terms of pent-up demand, is also seen as a potential growth engine. 

The current period of global uncertainty and volatility has only strengthened India’s appeal as an attractive investment destination. The record-breaking amounts of capital raised by India-focused funds in 2022 stand as a testament to the strong investor confidence in India’s “Invest in India” narrative. This growing faith in the Indian economy serves as a powerful tailwind propelling the country towards its ambitious goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

Ten years ago, India’s economic path was fraught with uncertainty. The nation faced several weaknesses in its economic structure and was highly susceptible to external economic pressures. However, under the astute guidance of PM Modi’s leadership, India has embarked on a remarkable economic journey. Between 2014 and 2022, India’s GDP has grown at an impressive compound annual growth rate of 5.6%, surpassing the growth rates of many other economies.

This growth has been achieved despite numerous global economic challenges. India has emerged as a beacon of stability and progress, attracting international investment and creating a favorable environment for businesses to expand their operations.

India’s economic engine is primarily driven by domestic demand, with consumption and investments contributing a significant 70% of overall economic activity. 

According to the following  economic indicators, India’s economy is rapidly growing and will soon be the third biggest in the world.

Economic Indicators

GDP per Capita: The average income per person in India is estimated to be 2.85 thousand US dollars.

Share of Global GDP: Based on purchasing power parity, India is set to account for 7.75% of the world’s GDP in 2024.

Real GDP Growth: According to the IMF, India’s economy, hailed as “the world’s fastest-growing major economy,” is projected to grow by 7% in 2024, which is an increase from the previous projection of 6.8%.

GDP per Capita in Purchasing Power: When considering purchasing power, the per capita income is projected to be an impressive 9.89 thousand international dollars.

GDP at Current Prices: The Indian economy is expected to reach a record high of 4.11 trillion US dollars.

Inflation Rate: Inflation in India is expected to remain moderate, around 4.6%.

End-of-Period Inflation Rate: By the end of 2024, Indian consumers can anticipate an inflation rate of 4.4%.

Current Account Balance: The current account deficit is narrowing and is expected to be -74.174 billion US dollars.

Business activity booming: A recent survey shows India’s business activity at a 14-year high, driven by strong demand, rising employment, and lower input costs. 

Strong foreign exchange reserves: India boasts healthy foreign exchange reserves exceeding US$643 billion as of April 2024.

PE-VC investment on the rise: India attracted a significant US$49.8 billion in private equity and venture capital investments in 2023.

Exports on an upward trend: Merchandise exports reached US$41.68 billion in March 2024, contributing to a total of US$437 billion for the financial year ending March 2024.

Science publication powerhouse: India ranks 3rd worldwide in the number of scientific publications.

GST revenue surges: India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection hit the second-highest ever in March 2024, at US$21.35 billion.

FDI inflows remain strong: Foreign direct investment  into India has steadily grown, reaching a cumulative total of US$971.52 billion by December 2023.

Industrial production maintains momentum: India’s industrial sector continues to see growth, with the February 2024 Index of Industrial Production (IIP) reaching 147.2.

Inflation under control: Consumer Price Index inflation remained moderate at 5.69% in December 2023.

Foreign and domestic investors: Foreign investors injected nearly US$9.67 billion between April and July 2023-24, while domestic investors offloaded US$540.56 million during the same period.

ROAD AHEAD

The Indian economy maintained its positive momentum in the first half of the financial year 2023-24 (FY24). This positive outlook is supported by several factors:

Sustained Growth: The economic growth momentum from the first quarter continued into the second quarter. Additionally, high-frequency indicators continued to perform well in July and August of 2023.

Strong External Sector: India’s position in the external sector is comparatively strong, reflecting a positive outlook for economic growth and rising employment rates. This strength is further bolstered by India’s ranking as the 5th largest recipient of foreign direct investment among developed and developing nations in the first quarter of 2022.

Increased Government Investment: The Indian government’s unwavering support for capital expenditure played a key role in the economic story of the first half of FY24. Capital expenditure in 2023-24 witnessed a significant increase of 37.4% compared to the same period in the previous year. This increase was driven by a steep rise in the capital expenditure outlay allocated in the 2023-24 budget. The budget saw a 37.4% increase in capital expenditure outlay, reaching Rs. 10 lakh crore (US$ 120.12 billion) compared to Rs. 7.28 lakh crore (US$ 87.45 billion) in the previous year’s revised estimate.

Shift Towards Higher-Quality Spending: There was a clear shift towards higher-quality spending in the current year. This is reflected in the ratio of revenue expenditure to capital outlay, which decreased by 1.2%. This decrease indicates a prioritization of capital expenditure over revenue expenditure.

Rising Capital Spending: The rise in capital spending can also be attributed to stronger revenue generation. This improved revenue generation stemmed from factors including better tax compliance, increased profitability of companies, and rising economic activity. In February 2024, the Finance Ministry announced the total expenditure for the Interim 2024-25 budget, estimated at US$ 571.64 billion, with US$ 133.27 billion allocated for capital expenditure.

Resilient Growth and Export Performance: India’s economic growth has shown resilience despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic. This resilience is further accentuated by the country’s strong export performance. As of April 2023, India’s merchandise exports witnessed the second-highest YoY growth rate of 8.39%, while service exports saw an even more impressive growth of 29.82%. Additionally, with a reduction in port congestion, supply networks are being restored.

Inflationary Pressures on the Decline: The reduction in CPI-C inflation observed since June 2022 reflects the positive impact of various measures. By September 2023 (provisional data), CPI-C inflation had fallen to 5.02%, down from 7.01% in June 2022. This decline in inflation can be attributed to a combination of factors, including proactive government actions, flexible monetary policy, and a softening of global commodity prices and supply-chain bottlenecks. Overall, inflationary pressures in India appear to be on a downward trend.

It’s time for Morgan Stanley to revise their 2013 economic prediction and elevate the Indian economy from the “fragile five” to “the top five”. I am not holding my breath for the New York time to report this positive change in India’s economy.

Economic Growth and Development

One of India’s most significant achievements is its economic growth. In 1947, India’s economy was primarily agrarian, with limited industrialization. Today, India is the world’s fifth-largest economy by nominal GDP and the third-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). This remarkable metamorphosis, driven by the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, has established India as a leading example of economic hope and opportunity.

Through a strategic combination of economic reforms, cutting-edge technological advancements, and social initiatives, India is meticulously planning a path towards achieving the status of a developed economy by the year 2047, a significant milestone coinciding with the centenary of its independence.

The following economic indicators clearly show that nothing is going to stop India from becoming a developed economy by the year 2047, the world’s third largest economy well before 2030, and the second largest by 2050.

The economic liberalization of 1991 marked a turning point for India. The government implemented structural reforms, reducing trade barriers and encouraging foreign direct investment (FDI). India has made significant strides in technology and industrialization. The country is now a global hub for information technology (IT) services, with cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad becoming renowned IT centers. In 2023, more than 190 countries participated in the celebrations, including mass yoga sessions, educational events, and other activities to promote the benefits of yoga. The day’s goal is to raise awareness of yoga’s holistic benefits and promote its practice globally.

Infrastructure Development

“Infrastructure development has been a key focus for India. The construction of a vast network of roads, highways, and expressways has improved connectivity across the country. The Golden Quadrilateral and Bharatmala projects have enhanced road infrastructure, facilitating trade and commerce.”

The expansion of the railway network, including the introduction of high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat Express, has revolutionized transportation. • “India has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to national security by being the sole country to ban TikTok and other Chinese applications deemed a threat to its sovereignty, showcasing a prioritization of domestic interests.”
• To safeguard its citizens from oil shortages and long queues, similar to those experienced by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, India has strategically purchased Russian oil at discounted prices. While domestic fuel prices have been relatively high, they have remained stable for over two years.
• India’s decision to acquire Rafale fighter jets from France instead of the US-made F-35s has resulted in significant cost savings and the acquisition of superior technology aligned with India’s specific needs. This choice was influenced by the US’s unreliability as a technology transfer partner and its history of prioritizing domestic interests (America First policy). A prime example is the US’s refusal to share GPS technology with India during the 1999 Kargil War while providing it to Pakistan.
• India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has emerged as a formidable global diplomat, consistently delivering strong and effective responses to any criticism or allegations leveled against India. His exceptional performance has solidified his position as one of the world’s most capable and admired foreign ministers.
• India has taken decisive action against Pakistan by conducting surgical strikes in Uri in 2016 and Balakot in 2019. The terrorist attacks on Indian army personnel in the Uri and Pulwama regions, respectively, prompted these military operations.
• India launched a counteroffensive in retaliation for the Chinese military incursion into the Galwan Valley in Ladakh, which claimed the lives of 20 Indian soldiers. Estimates suggest that at least 50 Chinese soldiers perished.

Environmental Initiatives

The 2024 T20 World Cup began on a high note for India. Their opening match against Ireland, played on June 5th at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, resulted in a convincing eight-wicket victory.

Ireland, who chose to bat first, were restricted to a meager total of 96 runs. This was primarily due to a dominant performance by the Indian fast bowling attack. Hardik Pandya emerged as the wrecker-in-chief, claiming three wickets in his bowling spell. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh provided excellent support, picking up two wickets each.

Chasing a relatively modest target of 97 runs, India secured a swift victory within 12.2 overs. The batting duo of Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant played instrumental roles in this win. Sharma struck a well-paced 52 runs off 37 balls, while Pant provided a quickfire knock of 36 runs from just 26 deliveries. Their aggressive batting ensured India chased down the target with minimal difficulty

Pakistan

In a tense and low-scoring encounter dominated by the bowling attacks, the Indian cricket team led by Rohit Sharma emerged victorious against their arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9th in New York.

Pakistan called the coin toss correctly and opted to field first. Their decision seemed justified as the Indian batsmen struggled against the Pakistani pace attack. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, both young and fiery quicks, ran through the Indian batting order, taking three wickets each. The only resistance for India came from the in-form wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant, who managed a fighting 42 runs off 31 balls. With the rest of the batting lineup failing to get going, India were bundled out for a meager 119 runs.

Despite the low score on the board, the Indian bowlers did a commendable job in defending the total. The initial overs were a tight affair, with Pakistan batting cautiously and the Indian pacers struggling to find breakthroughs. However, the tide turned in the latter half of the innings. Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh, India’s pace spearheads, rose to the occasion. Bumrah delivered a lethal spell, picking up 3 wickets for just 14 runs. Pandya and Arshdeep chipped in with crucial wickets as well, taking 2 and 1 wickets respectively. Left-arm spinner Axar Patel also played his part, claiming a wicket for just 11 runs. With some disciplined bowling and a collective effort, the Indian bowlers restricted Pakistan to 113 runs, falling short of the target by a narrow margin of 6 runs.

USA

The Indian cricket team secured a dominant victory against the USA, one of the co-hosts of the tournament, by a margin of seven wickets. The match took place on June 12th at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.

Arshdeep Singh’s bowling performance was a key factor in India’s win. He delivered an exceptional spell, taking a staggering four wickets while conceding only nine runs in his four overs. This stellar bowling effort restricted the USA team to a modest total of 110 runs on the board, with only eight wickets remaining after their 20 overs.

The Indian batting innings started with a slight hiccup. Saurabh Netravalkar, the USA bowler, posed a significant challenge by dismissing both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two of India’s most experienced batsmen, within the third over of the chase. However, the Indian batting line-up displayed resilience. Suryakumar Yadav played a crucial role in stabilizing the innings, scoring a well-paced fifty off just 49 balls. Shivam Dube also provided valuable support with a knock of 31 runs in 35 balls. These vital contributions from Yadav and Dube ensured India reached the target comfortably, with ten balls remaining in their innings.

This victory came after India’s previous match against Canada was abandoned due to rain. Despite the washout, India’s performance throughout the group stage was commendable. They finished at the top of Group A in the tournament, accumulating a total of seven points from their four completed matches. This win against the USA secured their qualification for the Super Eights stage of the competition.

Afghanistan

The T20 World Cup moved from the United States to the beautiful Caribbean islands for the Super Eights stage. India kicked off their campaign on June 20th, facing Afghanistan in the opening match of Group 1. The venue for this clash was the historic Kensington Oval in Barbados.

India’s batting performance was powered by a spectacular innings from Suryakumar Yadav. He blazed his way to a score of 53 runs in just 28 balls, showcasing his explosive batting style. Valuable contributions also came from Hardik Pandya (32 runs in 24 balls) and Axar Patel (12 runs in a quickfire 6 balls). Thanks to this collective effort, India set a challenging target of 181 runs for Afghanistan to chase.

Unfortunately for Afghanistan, their chase never really got going. The Indian bowling attack was disciplined and effective.
