Meditation doesn’t have to be a mountain to climb; in fact, Raja Yoga is often called ‘Easy Raja Yoga’ for a reason. While finding that inner hush might seem daunting at first, getting started is simply a matter of knowing the way. By following this straightforward five-step process, you’ll soon find that reaching a state of calm doesn’t require a long journey—“eventually, a single, focused thought is all it takes to arrive at total stillness.”

Relaxation

Relaxation is about letting go of tension and stress and bringing the mind and body into a state of calm and peace …

Concentration

Concentration allows me to use my time productively, once I have relaxed: I focus on the thoughts I choose to have …

Contemplation

Contemplation is reflecting deeply on myself, my inner world and my values…

Realisation

Realisation is when my understanding and feelings combine and I experience a more profound, more meaningful reality within…

Meditation

Meditation is focusing on a thought and remembering my eternal identity, and re-awakening a wonderful state of well-being …

Where to Meditate

Life already feels full – filled with activities and responsibilities, so where can we put in the activity of meditation? That’s the beauty of Raja Yoga; you can fit it in anywhere.

At home

You don’t need a special room or allocated space, any quiet corner or comfortable chair will do. Make a regular appointment to meet up with your innermost self. In time, you’ll probably find a particular place that you’re drawn to, where the vibrations of your own stillness and reflective practice create a little place of peace. Visit whenever you like. Visit often.

In your workplace

Wherever you work, a little creative thought can suggest a place for meditation: quietly holding the phone to your ear for a moment or two while listening to the silence within, instead of a voice on the phone. Or walking down a corridor with a file can give you a few minutes of peacefulness away from your desk. Your colleagues won’t notice you meditating, but they may notice your new calmness.

While travelling

The time you spend going from one place to another, on foot, travelling by bus or train can be used to visit your internal space of stillness. The open-eyed method of Raja Yoga meditation makes this inner journey possible and practical.

Outside or inside

The whole world offers itself to you to select your own special place to connect with yourself and the One. On a sunlit beach or in a supermarket queue, a serene riverbank or a dentist’s waiting room, a bench in a city square or a patch of grass somewhere. Everywhere is a fine place to become still and silent. Pick your own place of peace.

Quiet among crowds

As you learn how to create a quiet room within yourself, you’ll find that you can slip into it at any time. When there are people around you, or when the world is noisy or challenging, step into the quietest place on the planet – the silent space of the soul.

Alone or in company

The most beautiful experiences of meditation can occur when you’re just on your own, only in the company of the One. There are also places and times when you might choose to meditate with others. All around the world there are Brahma Kumaris centres and quiet places of peacefulness where anyone can visit to share moments of calm. In some places these are called ‘Inner Space’.

There are particular times, too, when like-minded people choose to meditate in unison around the world, with the understanding that sharing positive thoughts at the same moment can increase the power and reach of their good wishes.

World Meditation Hour

The tradition of creating one hour of peace around the world began in 1978 and it takes place on every third Sunday of the month. The aim is to share good vibrations and donate love and peace for the world and all the people on our precious planet. If we remember that this world is, after all, our global home, then together we can shine a ray of hope that will shed a little light to help to heal our world.

Retreats – spaces of calm

Besides creating oases of calm and quiet throughout each day, we might sometimes choose to take time out of our normal routine to go on a spiritual retreat.

Going on any form of retreat can be the first step that we take to re-connect with our inner ‘self’. We may have the thought to get away from things externally, to make some physical changes outside, by taking time out. But what about the true re-treat, where we go deep within to the core of our being? When we work on ourselves, we can return to the space inside where we can re-connect with our own true ‘self’. This is the spiritual ‘self’, that which is at our core, that part of us that does not change.

Taking time out through the process of meditation is a journey in itself. Meditation allows us to come back to a place of inner balance, where our thoughts, feelings, energy and time are used in a way that has value and is worthwhile. “Everything depends on our stage of awareness and an understanding of our true identity. At this point we start to open the door to more positive experiences in life.” We start to value things of a spiritual rather than a material nature. We begin to create a values-based, quality life, where we can afford to be generous and loving. Our thinking becomes clearer and our decision-making power increases.

The real re-treat helps us to re-turn – to get us into a space where we can re-connect to our truth, to understand, to experience and to answer the age old question, “Who am I?” It is only then that we are both at the beginning and the end! This is where this question ends and the experience begins. Enjoy the journey.

Time for Meditation

Most people say they would like to meditate. Most people say they don’t meditate. And why?

Because, they say, they don’t have time. So how and when do busy people, like you, make moments to meditate?

First thing in the morning

The moment you open your eyes and know you are awake is a great time to start meditating. Start by greeting yourself, the powerful positive soul you are. And then greet the One who never sleeps.

At mealtimes

Meditate meal timesBefore you eat, you can sit for a moment, meditating on the good fortune of having food to eat and with the understanding of how our thoughts affect our food, what we think, do and become. Filling our food with powerful thoughts of gratitude and grace means we feed ourselves too, with all good things. [Also of interested: The Mindful Kitchen].

Throughout the day – Traffic Control

We are all drivers on the highway of life, and every now and then it is good to check the direction in which we are travelling. When we drive our car on the road we have to stop at every traffic light, so perhaps we can learn to take advantage of these traffic light moments during the day to practise some meditation. In the same way, by pausing our thoughts from time to time we can check and re-direct them, and create a method to make positive changes that will help to put our mind back into neutral.

Taking short peace breaks for the mind gives us a chance to re-focus our thinking, and helps to put the mind back into the right gear to create a positive flow of thoughts and feelings. By doing this, we will find that our day will run more smoothly and peacefully, because ‘traffic control’ moments allow us to maintain balanced thinking.

At night

Before you sleep is a good time for your final meditation of the day. Book yourself a little time, as part of your bedtime routine, to sit quietly with yourself and reflect on the day – considering what was well done and what could be done differently tomorrow. Deliberately close up the ‘files’ of the day’s activities and put them away in your mind, so you can bring the day to a close and allow yourself to slip into sleep, untroubled and at peace.

Anytime

Whenever you arrive at a moment of anxiety or indecision, uncertain of the way forward, that could be a moment to go ‘within’ and await an answer.

In a moment of gratitude and pleasure, why not share it with the One.

When frustrated, lonely, tired or happy, uplifted, optimistic – all these are moments to find power to deal with negatives and times to enjoy and enrich the positive – anytime is time for a moment of meditation.
The post Meditation Made Simple: Finding Peace in Daily Life first appeared on Desh-Videsh Media reaches 1.5 Millions+ Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshi, and Indo-Caribbeans..

Last month, my wife, Aruna; my cousin, Kashmira; and I had the rare privilege of visiting the Brahma Kumaris Peace Village Learning and Retreat Center nestled in the breathtaking beauty of the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York. Spread across 300 acres of pristine woods, flowing streams, and walking trails, Peace Village is not just a physical space—it is a sanctuary for the soul, a spiritual haven where one feels reconnected to higher consciousness. For us, this experience was deeply moving, spiritually uplifting, and profoundly peaceful.

A Sanctuary of Serenity

The moment we entered the campus, a sense of calm enveloped us. The stillness of the environment, the crisp mountain air, and the naturally serene setting all contributed to a deep inner quietude. The campus comprises six beautifully maintained buildings, each clean, orderly, and filled with an unmistakable spiritual vibration. Of all the spaces, it was the main hall that stood out most to me—its powerful energy field created a sense of “high vibrations” that I could feel in my heart and mind. It was as if the walls had absorbed decades of meditation and selfless service.

A Global Movement Rooted in Inner Peace

BK sister Kala Ji with Aruna, Kashmira and Raj

Peace Village is one of more than 15 retreat centers operated by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual Organization, a global spiritual movement with over one million practitioners across 120 countries. Since 1999, Peace Village has welcomed thousands of guests from all walks of life to its Catskill sanctuary. Administered by volunteers and supported by donations, it is a place designed not for profit but for spiritual growth.

The Brahma Kumaris organization itself was founded in India and has been active in the U.S. since 1975. In fact, it has been a non-governmental organization (NGO) affiliated with the United Nations since the early 1980s, working to promote peace, sustainability, and the inner transformation of individuals and communities through Raj Yoga meditation.

Guided Meditation, Soul Consciousness, and Karma

While we did not attend any formal retreat sessions or meditation courses during our visit, we learned that Peace Village regularly offers a wide range of programs designed to help individuals explore and deepen their spiritual journey. These include guided Raja Yoga meditation sessions and workshops on soul consciousness, the law of karma, stress management, and self-transformation. These teachings are not just philosophical concepts but practical tools for modern living—rooted in ancient wisdom yet fully relevant to today’s fast-paced world. The retreat center’s experienced and compassionate instructors guide participants in understanding the self as a spiritual being—a soul of light, peace, and purity—distinct from the temporary labels of the physical body. These programs also include early morning classes, evening silence walks, and sessions that encourage mindfulness, inner reflection, and harmony with nature. Just being in this spiritually charged environment, even without formally participating, gave us a glimpse of the depth and clarity that these programs aim to cultivate in seekers from all walks of life.

The retreat offered vegetarian meals, high vibrations, and divine company.

Another aspect that made a strong impression on us was the pure, sattvic vegetarian meals served at the retreat. Carefully prepared with love and spiritual vibrations, every meal felt like nourishment for both body and soul. It’s no wonder that food plays such a central role in spiritual development according to the Brahma Kumaris—what we eat directly impacts our thoughts and, ultimately, our destiny.

But above all, it was the people we met who made the experience unforgettable.

Meeting Divine Souls: Kala Didi and Dorothy Didi

We were especially honored to have a one-on-one conversation with Brahma Kumari Kala Didi, the director of Peace Village. A board-certified pediatrician who once cared for the physical health of children, she now dedicates her life to guiding others on the path of spiritual healing. Her calm demeanor, wisdom, and gentle words made a deep impact on both Aruna and me.

Kala Didi’s journey—from medicine to meditation—is a testament to the idea that true service goes beyond physical needs and touches the soul. Since moving to Peace Village in 1999, she has served as both the spiritual and administrative guide of the center, with over 35 years of experience as a spiritual teacher.

We were also privileged to have a delightful sattvic lunch with Kala Didi, during which we discussed meditation, seva (selfless service), and the importance of silence in today’s noisy world.

BK Dorothy Steinfeld Didi with Raj Shah

We also met Brahma Kumari. Dorothy Steinfeld Didi is the director of programs at Peace Village. Dorothy Didi, a spiritual educator with backgrounds in teaching and business, has been part of the Brahma Kumaris since the center’s inception. Over the years, she has cultivated an incredible faculty of teachers and volunteers who carry forward the mission of peace, wisdom, and personal transformation.

Her warm presence and ability to communicate spiritual wisdom in simple, accessible language made a strong impression on us. We could see how her life experience and commitment have helped shape Peace Village into a nurturing spiritual hub.

The Art of Meditation: Monika Didi’s Spiritual Paintings

Another highlight of our retreat was visiting Monika Didi’s art gallery on campus. A trained fashion designer and spiritual artist, Monika Kalra creates profound oil and digital artworks that arise from deep meditative states. Her paintings are not just visual experiences—they radiate spiritual energy, inviting viewers into silent reflection.

Her journey in the arts and her deep connection to the Brahma Kumaris since 2001 have given her a unique ability to channel divine energy into every canvas. We were particularly moved by her “Paint & Meditate” workshops, where she encourages individuals to explore their inner vision and peace through creative expression. Her works, in many ways, serve as a bridge between outer beauty and inner truth.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Waddy Ben

Our heartfelt thanks go to Waddy Ben from the Brahma Kumaris Center in Miami, who graciously made all the arrangements for our visit to Peace Village. I first met Waddy Ben when Sister Shivani visited Miami last year and immediately noticed in her the same inner glow, calmness, and deep satisfaction that I later found in so many Brahma Kumaris brothers and sisters. What touched me most about her presence was the complete absence of ego and arrogance—qualities that are sadly rare but deeply inspiring. Sister Waddy Ben has been studying and teaching Raja Yoga Meditation for over 40 years. Born and raised in Ireland, she came across the Brahma Kumaris in London before moving to the United States to help establish BK meditation centers—first in Tampa and then in Miami, from where she now coordinates the organization’s work throughout the state of Florida. In addition to her local service, Sister Waddy also contributes to global initiatives such as Images and Voices of Hope, an international dialogue on the social impact of public images and storytelling. Her lifelong dedication, grace, and unwavering spiritual focus have been a source of inspiration for us and countless others.

Our special thanks go to Brother Abhishek ji.

Residing at Peace Village for the past several years, they serve as dedicated volunteers and spiritual practitioners.

Brother Abhishek’s humble and welcoming nature made us feel instantly at home, and his insights during our campus tour added much depth to our understanding.

His calm presence reminded us that “true spirituality is not about words but about being—being peaceful, present, and purposeful”.

Lessons That Stay With Us

Baba’s Meditation Room

One of the most striking aspects of our experience—both at Peace Village and earlier at the Brahma Kumaris center in Miami—was the remarkable character of the Brahma Kumaris brothers and sisters we met. Over the years, I have come across and worked with several non-profit and spiritual organizations, but I have never witnessed the kind of inner glow, calmness, and deep satisfaction that radiated from these individuals. What touched me most was their complete absence of ego and arrogance. Whether it was the brothers and sisters living full-time at Peace Village or those serving at the Miami center, each one embodied humility, grace, and a firm commitment to service. Their faces reflected contentment, their words carried kindness, and their actions radiated selflessness. In fact, I knew very little about the Brahma Kumaris organization until Sister Shivani visited Miami last year. That event opened the doors for me to meet several Brahma Kumaris teachers and volunteers, and now at Peace Village, I feel even more connected to their beautiful way of life rooted in simplicity, silence, and soul-consciousness.

As we reflect on our time at Peace Village, several lessons stand out:

Peace is within: The stillness we seek outside is already present inside us. Raja Yoga teaches us how to tap into this inner peace.

Soul consciousness heals: Seeing ourselves and others as souls creates harmony in relationships and eliminates ego-based conflicts.

Service is sacred: Every volunteer at Peace Village serves with joy, reminding us that selfless service is a path to both personal growth and global transformation.

Silence is powerful: Whether it was during the early morning class or evening walks, quiet became our teacher and friend.

Spiritual company uplifts: The vibrations of the place, the teachings of Sister Shivani and Dadi Janki, and the lives of residents like Kala Didi, Dorothy Didi, and Monika Didi inspired us to live with more awareness and intention.

A Place Worth Returning To

Art Gallery of BK sister Monica ji

Peace Village is not just a destination—it’s an experience. The experience endures in the heart, even after you’ve reverted to the daily routines. It’s a reminder that no matter how chaotic the world may become, there’s always a refuge of calm and clarity available to us—if only we look within.

Aruna and I left with full hearts and quiet minds, carrying with us not just memories but a spiritual compass to guide our lives. We are deeply grateful to the Brahma Kumaris for creating and nurturing such a space of transformation, and we encourage anyone seeking peace, clarity, or healing to visit Peace Village at least once in their lifetime.

As Sister Shivani says, “Peace is not something you find outside; it is something you awaken within.”
At Peace Village, we truly awakened a part of ourselves we didn’t even know was sleeping.

Om Shanti

In the world of yoga, few things stir controversy like the words “beer yoga” or “puppy yoga.” For some, these fusions are blasphemous — a dilution of a sacred science. But for me? They’re part of the dance with Māyā — the illusion that both binds us and brings us closer to truth.

In Vedantic philosophy, Māyā is the veil — the temporary, sensory world that distracts us from the Self. But here’s the twist: Māyā isn’t the enemy. It’s the tool. Even the scriptures never tell us to reject the world — only to see through it, to transcend it with awareness. And how do we get there? Often, through the doorway of experience — even if it begins with a yoga pose and a pint in hand.

Someone may come for puppy yoga. They may leave with curiosity about breath. That breath might lead them to meditation. That silence might lead them to themselves. Was the journey less valid because it began with something cute or commercial? I don’t think so. In fact, I think that’s exactly how Māyā works when we choose to use it intelligently.

That’s why, at our events, we mix joy with depth. Amid the playfulness, we offer authentic Vedic teachings — from classical pranayama to traditional asana practices taught with reverence and lineage. The Māyā may draw the crowd, but the shastra (scripture) shapes the experience.

As organizers and cultural torchbearers, especially in the South Asian diaspora, we face a choice: resist how yoga is evolving — or engage with Māyā to guide others inward. I choose the latter. I choose creativity over gatekeeping. Inclusion over indignation. Instead of being offended by how yoga looks on the surface… choose to open the door wider. Meet people where they are. Let them in. And then gently guide them deeper.

Events like International Yoga Day Miami aren’t purist temples. They’re portals — full of color, sound, sometimes even chaos. But within that, there are sacred moments: a child sitting in stillness, an elder chanting a mantra, a first-timer feeling their breath fully for the first time.

Māyā brought them here. Our job is to show them the door beyond it.

Let the puppies play. Let the dance music pulse. Beneath it all, the soul is always listening.

For thousands of years, yogis have held an intriguing belief: You are born with a fixed number of breaths. Spend them quickly, and your life is shorter. Spend them slowly, and you extend your time.

It’s a poetic way of saying something modern science now supports: your breathing rate reflects — and influences — your metabolism, stress response, and rate of cellular aging.

In classical yoga, breath is more than oxygen exchange — it’s prāṇa, the life force. Each inhalation and exhalation is a unit of that life force being used. If you race through your breaths, you “burn through” your prāṇa. If you slow your breath, you conserve it.

This philosophy often comes alive through animal analogies:

Dog – 20–40 breaths per minute, lifespan 10–15 years.

Tortoise – 4–5 breaths per minute, lifespan 100+ years.

For the yogi, slowing the breath isn’t about laziness — it’s about living in a calmer, more energy-efficient state where both body and mind last longer.

From a physiological standpoint, breathing rate links directly to metabolic rate:

Rapid breathing → higher metabolism → more oxidative stress on cells → faster aging.

Slow breathing → lower metabolism → reduced cellular wear and tear → slower aging.

In essence, the “finite breath” theory parallels the idea that each organism has a metabolic budget. Spend it too fast, and you accelerate the clock.

Yoga’s tools — from simple slow breathing to advanced kumbhaka (breath retention) — lower your breaths per minute. Over time, this has cascading effects:

Nervous system shift: From sympathetic “fight-or-flight” dominance to parasympathetic “rest-and-repair.”

Hormonal balance: Reduced cortisol, steadier insulin levels.

Cellular protection: Lower free radical damage through reduced oxidative load.

The result is not just a calmer mind but a body that biologically behaves as if it’s younger.

You don’t need to become a Himalayan ascetic to benefit from the finite breath principle. Even dropping from 15 breaths per minute to 8–10 can improve heart rate variability, oxygen efficiency, and overall calm. With practice, you might approach the yogic ideal of 6 breaths per minute — where longevity benefits start to compound.

In the yogic sense, every breath is a coin from your life’s bank account.
Spend it carelessly, and the account runs dry too soon.
Spend it slowly, and you might just buy yourself more time — and more peace — in this body.

As always, come practice with us at 8pm on Monday nights on Zoom for 5 minutes of pranayama and 5 minutes of meditation!
Yoga, with its holistic approach to fitness, continues to be the preferred method for those looking to tone and nourish their bodies. Despite the myriad of workout options available today, yoga stands out for its ability to address the entire body and promote overall well-being. For many, the quest for a toned midsection leads them to specific yoga asanas designed to target and flatten the belly.

Yoga Asanas for a Toned Tummy

Among the various yoga poses, several are particularly effective in focusing on the abdominal region. These poses not only help in achieving a toned stomach but also address common digestive issues like constipation, indigestion, and bloating. The following asanas are especially suitable for beginners and are known for their ability to strengthen the core and improve overall digestive health.

The Bhujangasana, or Cobra Pose, is a staple in yoga routines aimed at strengthening the abdominal muscles and relieving tension in the lower back. This pose involves lying face down, placing the hands under the shoulders, and lifting the upper body while keeping the lower body grounded.

Similarly, the Dhanurasana, or Bow Pose, may seem simple but provides a rigorous workout for the abs. In this pose, one lies on the stomach, bends the knees, and holds the ankles while lifting both the hands and feet, along with the thighs and chest.

Another powerful pose for burning belly fat is the Kumbhakasana, commonly known as the Plank Pose. This pose involves lying face down and then lifting the body onto straightened arms and toes, holding the position to engage the core muscles.

The Naukasana, or Boat Pose, is excellent for targeting the side and front abdominal muscles. This pose involves lying on the back, lifting the hands and legs simultaneously to create a V-shape, and holding the position while practicing deep breathing.

The Ustrasana, or Camel Pose, is more challenging and should be performed with caution, especially for those with back issues. This pose involves kneeling with knees hip-width apart, arching the back, and reaching back to hold the heels.

Finally, the Eka Pada Adho Mukha Svanasana, or One-Legged Downward-Facing Dog Pose, is great for balance and strengthening the abs. Starting in a downward-facing dog position, one leg is lifted and straightened, then lowered under the abs repeatedly.

Another effective pose is the Vasisthasana, or Side Plank Pose. This variation of the plank pose involves tilting the body to one side while lifting the opposite arm, providing an intense core workout.

Consistency is Key

To see the best results, these yoga poses should be practiced consistently, preferably in the morning. Consistency and dedication to the practice are essential, and incorporating deep breathing techniques will enhance the effectiveness of the asanas. To avoid monotony, alternating between different poses can keep the routine engaging. With regular practice and commitment, these yoga poses can help achieve a toned and healthy belly.
The post Flatten Your Belly with These 6 Transformative Yoga Poses first appeared on Desh-Videsh Media reaches 1.5 Millions+ Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshi, and Indo-Caribbeans..

Our physical bodies are made up of what we feed them – food, water, the air we breathe. Likewise, our minds are made from everything we read, converse about, listen to, and watch.

Today, in the name of knowledge and entertainment we are absorbing negative information through social and print media, cinema and television. This becomes part of our minds, making it difficult to create right thoughts and responses to difficult situations.

Suppose a family member has not returned home from the office until very late at night. Thoughts of an accident or other unpleasant scenes come naturally as we wait. It feels difficult to assume everything is fine. When we fill our minds with news and visuals of violence, accidents, crime and calamities, wrong thoughts are readily created.

We can emotionally detox the mind and empower it through simple everyday practices:

The first few thoughts upon waking are of gratitude. Connect to God and give gratitude in your own way. Thank your mind and body for sustaining you. Then give gratitude to everyone and for everything around you.

Spend three minutes creating affirmations for your tasks, health, relationships, habits or projects. Visualize vividly on the screen of your mind that everything is being executed to perfection. The combined power of affirmation and visualization make it easier to manifest.

Freshen up and meditate for 20 minutes, each morning. Connect to God, take His love and healing energy, and visualize that energy radiating to your mind and body. In this state you will be able to emerge your innate, original qualities of happiness, love and compassion.

Weddings are joyous occasions, but the preparations can sometimes leave brides, grooms, and even their families feeling overwhelmed. Amidst the flurry of planning, pranayama — the ancient art of breath control in yoga — offers a serene oasis. The word Pranayama can break down into “prana” (life force) and “ayama” (expansion/extension) or “prana” and “yama” (control/restraint).

“The breath, our prana, works as a bridge between the body and mind, influencing emotional responses and mental states. Shallow, rapid breathing can be a quick way to recognize that you are stressed and anxious. Deep, slow, purposeful breathing promotes calmness and can put you into a relaxed state.”

When we regulate our breathing patterns through pranayama, we can influence our emotional state and gain control over the mind instead of allowing our mind to control our feelings, mood, and actions and makes us less reactive and more reflective and purposeful with our moves. Here’s how incorporating simple breathing exercises can help alleviate stress as you approach your big day.

Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

This technique is excellent for restoring balance and calming the mind. Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight. Place your right thumb over your right nostril and inhale deeply through the left nostril. At the peak of your inhalation, close off the left nostril with your ring finger, then exhale through the right nostril. Continue this pattern, alternating nostrils after each inhalation. Nadi Shodhana helps harmonize the two hemispheres of the brain, promoting clarity and peace.

Bhramari (Bee Breathing)

Bhramari is known for its immediate soothing effects on the mind, perfect for relieving pre-wedding jitters. Close your eyes and deep breathe in. As you exhale, gently press your fingers onto your ears and make a loud humming sound like a bee. The vibration of the humming can help calm your thoughts and ease anxiety.

Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath)

This energizing breath can be used to clear the mind and invigorate the body when wedding fatigue sets in. Sit with your spine erect and take a few deep breaths. Then, forcefully expel the breath from your lungs using quick contractions of your lower belly. Focus on the exhalation; the inhalation should happen passively. Kapalabhati is great for refreshing your mind and awakening your senses.

By spending just a few minutes each day practicing these pranayama techniques, you can significantly reduce stress levels, enhance your focus, and maintain your calm. Embrace these breaths of peace as you prepare for a memorable day ahead, ensuring you stay present and joyful throughout the celebration and also allow you to help guide others that may be stressed and anxious during this time. Wishing you a beautiful wedding season filled with love, good vibes, and ease!

Some of you may know that Aruna and I visited India early this year. I have written in my editorial column about celebrating Jan 26 – India republic day at Gujarat VidyaPeeth, institute founded by Mahatma Gandhi, visited Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad on Jan 30th, Gandhi ji death anniversary, hosted fashion show at one of the local colleges with the theme of Indian traditional outfits.

In this article let me talk about one more very interesting thing we did while we were in India. Desh-Videsh Media Group hosted a Poetry Contest at one of the high schools. The subject was Prime Minister Modi.

The rules of this contest were as follows,

The format of the poetry must be a quatrain, which consists of four lines in each stanza. The rhyme scheme of this poem will be AABB, meaning that the first and second lines of each stanza rhyme with each other, as do the third and fourth lines.

Only submit ONE poem, ONE time. Submitting multiple poems will cause disqualification. Only one poem per student will be accepted.

Poem must adhere to basic rules of capitalization.

Do not type poem in all capital letters.

Do not capitalize the first letter of every word.

Only capitalize words that are proper (i.e. names and places).

The first word of each line may be capitalized.

Do not use “texting” lingo. Properly spell out all words.

Poems containing language that is vulgar, offensive, or wholly inappropriate will not be accepted.

Instead of Announcing First, second and third winners, we decided to announce the top 15 winners and each will get Rs 1000 as a prize.

A Man of Humble Beginnings

In the land of India, there rose a leader bold
A man of humble beginnings, yet with a heart of gold
His name was Narendra Modi, a man of great renown
Who climbed the ladder of success, from a small town

He served his country with all his might
With a vision in his heart, and a goal in sight
To make India strong, to make it great
To lead it to a brighter, better fate

His words rang true, his actions spoke loud

He built new roads, and he made new bridges
He brought electricity to the farthest reaches
He gave the poor a voice, and the rich a heart
He united the nation, and set it apart

So let us all hail this great leader
And make corruption pay its toll.

No more shall bribe or greed hold sway,
For Modi leads the righteous way,
With laws that bind and justice fair,
He builds a future free from despair.

The people trust his every move,
For he has shown he will improve
A leader strong, with heart and mind,
He fights for truth, for all mankind.

So let us raise our voice in praise,
For Modi’s bold and fearless ways.
A beacon bright, a shining star,
He leads us on to worlds afar.

Providing Equal Rites To Every Religion

In the land of many religions,
Where diverse beliefs abound,
There was a leader named Modi,
With equality in his sound.

He sought to bring together,
All faiths under one roof,
To end religious divides,
And provide equal proof.

No longer would one be favored,
Over the other in sight,
For Modi knew that unity,
Could only come from what’s right.

With open arms he welcomed
Each religion with respect,
And pledged to treat them equally,
Without any neglect.

For he believed that differences,
Should not create strife,
But instead be celebrated,
And enhance every life.

And so he worked tirelessly,
To build a nation of trust,
Where every religion could flourish,
Without any bias or lust.

For Modi knew that in diversity,
Lies the beauty of a nation,
And providing equal rights to all,
Was his greatest aspiration.

Happy August! Since we are in the full swing of the summer season, let’s go through some Ayurvedic tips to brighten your skin, make your hair healthier, and keep you calm and relaxed through this fun time!

Skin Care

Swedana, sweating, is great for opening up the pores and sweating out toxins. You can buy a facial steamer from Amazon, or boil some water in a pot, cover your head with a towel, and hang over the hot water (with the stove off!). The steam works just as well as a facial steamer!

Brides (and grooms) can use sugar to exfoliate the face. Honey and lemon can be used to even out the skin tone and to fade acne scarring. The inside of tomatoes can be used for the same purpose.

Mixing a pinch of turmeric with a scoop of besan (gram powder) and creating a paste with milk, cream, or water can help to clean and purify the skin.

For those that suffer from redness, inflammation, and acne, applying aloe vera can be cooling and can help balance some of those pitta symptoms. It also helps to hydrate the skin and even out the skin tone. You can also make a paste of tulsi leaves for your face – it’s great for those with oily skin since it is great for skin disorders and for acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Drinking CCF (coriander, cumin, fennel) tea daily can help to clear toxins out of your digestive system, thus clearing your complexion. Refer back to my Preven-Tea-Tive article for an exact recipe of how to make it, plus some added benefits!

A daily abhyanga would be amazing for your overall skin as well as your mind. An abhyanga is an oil massage. Depending on your type of skin and your dosha, you can use a specific oil, but refined sesame oil works for anyone! Before a shower (or, if you are prone to dry skin, use after your shower), massage oil into your skin and leave on for a minimum of 15 minutes so that it can be well absorbed. It’s great for your body and you will feel more relaxed through giving yourself a massage.

Hair Care

There are two things that are super important for hair and scalp health.

The first thing for hair is to give yourself a daily head massage.

The second is to put oil on your scalp and hair. The best way? Do them both at the same time! Amla oil is amazing for the scalp and hair. Amla oil and hair massages are known for strengthening the scalp and hair. Amla is also used for reducing graying of the hair. A hair massage stimulates the hair follicles, and just like amla oil, can help increase hair growth. If you have a dry scalp and suffer from dandruff, oiling the scalp helps to rejuvenate the skin. Amla oil can easily be found at your local desi store, Amazon, or I can send you a recipe on how to make it at home yourself!

Mental Balance

Tulsi leaves are usually something that every family has at home. Take a few of these leaves and boil them to make a tea or eat them as they are. Tulsi is known for being a relaxant. In Ayurveda, tulsi is used as a way to regulate hormones which can regulate your mood, and help awaken the neurotransmitters that work to make this happen. You can eat a few tulsi leaves to freshen your breath and to relax. Mint tea can also be taken as a way to relax your nerves.

Some pranayama exercises can definitely help keep you balanced, such as anuloma viloma (alternate nostril breathing) and ujjayi pranayama (victorious breath). Anuloma viloma is practiced by using your right ring finger and thumb to block one nostril at a time. Start by blocking the right nostril and inhaling through the left, close the left nostril, open the right nostril and exhale through the right. Then, inhale through the right, close the right, open the left nostril, and exhale out the left. That is one cycle. Do this for 5-10 minutes and you will see a noticeable shift in your mood.

Doing a few yoga poses can also relax you. It may not be conducive to do adho mukha svanasana (downward facing dog) but just sitting in a meditative pose, vajrasana (thunderbolt/diamond pose), by kneeling and sitting on your heels can help bring peace.

If none of these are feasible, sitting in a chair and even standing with your eyes closed for a few minutes can help to bring relaxation.

I hope these suggestions help you. Remember, these tips and tricks are great for any time of the year. Just keep calm and have fun through the rest of the summer! When in doubt, give yourself a massage!
