Dear Readers

The beginning of the New Year always brings new hope, excite-ment, and also challenges. For me, the month of January gives me triple the excitement! Three of my family members, two grandsons and one daughter-in-law celebrate their birthdays during this month. Recently, Aruna and I went to Washington, DC for a triple birthday celebration. Yes, in the freezing cold, but believe me it was worth every minute. During the birth-day celebration, I had the opportunity to meet many young parents and their children. What I was really pleased to see was that every parent, and especially the moms, exhibited the traits of a “conscious parent.” As second generation Indians, these parents have done a good job in raising their children.

I mentioned that I was reading the book, The Conscious Parent by Dr. Shefali Tsabary to one of these young parents. When I told the parents we were going to do a review of this book in the next issue of Desh-Videsh, each one of them got so excited and wanted to learn more. In my opinion, this excitement and desire to learn more alone makes them truly conscious parents.

In her book, Dr. Shefali Tsabary has done wonderful job in providing step-by-step guidance on how to raise a child in a changing environment. She has made a difficult job easy. One of her reviewers, Cynthia, writes, “If you’re seeking quick and easy ways to change your children’s behavior, or get them to do what you say, this book is not for you. Becoming a conscious parent requires looking deeply and honestly with-in oneself, delving into one’s own fears and shortcomings.“ Since Dr. Tsabary ‘s approach of raising children involves compassion and spiritual development, it is of no surprise that His Holiness, the Dalai Lama wrote this book’s Preface.

Speaking of passionate matters, February is Healthy Heart month. If you want to live a long and happy life as a parent, you need to be healthy and take care of your body, especially your heart. Paromita Chatterjee shares with us easy ways to cook and eat healthy. Many of our readers are great cooks, but after reading this article, you will know whether your cooking is healthy or not!

Last but not least, I would like to announce our new proj-ects. After successful bridal shows in Florida, we are happy to announce the next My Shadi Bridal Expo in At-lanta. I would like to thank all of you who already have registered to be an exhibitor, and all the brides, grooms and their family members who have registered to attend.

Next, we will be doing a special wedding edition for the Wash-ington DC, Virginia, and Maryland area. Given the interest and success of wedding issues in the Florida and Georgia market, we believe readers in the metro-DC area will be equally thrilled.
Finally, Desh-Videsh will now be available in popular book-stores, such as Barnes and Noble and Borders. I look forward to receiving your continued support for all of our endeavors.
