Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has been honored with the 2023 Public Officials Award by the Water Environment Federation (WEF) for his remarkable contributions to clean water legislation and advocacy for water safety. The award recognizes his documented and significant efforts in these areas, leading to improvements in the water environment.

Krishnamoorthi’s advocacy work includes supporting crucial legislation such as the Great Lakes Restoration Act, the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) Action Act, and various local water projects outlined in the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. His commitment to water safety and legislative initiatives has earned him this prestigious recognition.

Expressing gratitude for the award, Krishnamoorthi thanked the Water Environment Federation for the honor and acknowledged their ongoing efforts to enhance water quality nationwide. He emphasized the importance of clean water in society and highlighted WEF’s dedication since 1928 to train professionals in ensuring healthy and safe water for all.

The Public Officials Award is presented to elected or appointed public officials who have made notable contributions in fields such as clean water legislation, public policy, government service, or other areas of public prominence, ultimately leading to advancements in the water environment. Krishnamoorthi’s leadership and advocacy have significantly contributed to this cause.

 Elected to Congress in 2016, Krishnamoorthi represents Illinois’ 8th District, encompassing Chicago’s west and northwest suburbs and the 41st ward of the city. He serves as the Ranking Member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, making history as the first South Asian American to lead a Congressional Committee.

 In addition to his role on the Select Committee, Krishnamoorthi serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the Committee on Oversight and Accountability. His diverse background, including degrees in mechanical engineering and law, coupled with his experience as a federal clerk and attorney, enriches his contributions to legislative matters and public service.
