Indian-origin corporate leader Shankh Mitra has emerged as one of the highest-paid executives in the world, securing the second position globally in CEO compensation rankings, just behind Tesla chief Elon Musk. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, Mitra’s total pay package for 2025 reached an extraordinary value of approximately $821 million, marking one of the most significant executive earnings in recent years.

Mitra’s journey to global corporate leadership began in India, where he studied engineering at Jadavpur University, specializing in Instrumentation and Electronics. He later moved to the United States to pursue an MBA in Applied Value Investing from Columbia Business School, laying the foundation for his career in finance and investment management.

He started his professional path at PwC, where he gained early experience in consulting before transitioning into investment roles. In 2009, he joined Fidelity Investments as an analyst and later worked with major hedge funds, including Citadel and Millennium Management, focusing on real estate securities and portfolio strategy.

In 2016, Mitra joined Welltower, a major S&P 500-listed real estate investment trust specializing in senior housing and healthcare infrastructure. His leadership abilities quickly advanced him through the organization, as he became Chief Investment Officer in 2018 before being appointed Chief Executive Officer two years later. Under his leadership, the company strengthened its investment strategy and expanded its market position.

A significant portion of Mitra’s compensation is tied to long-term stock performance. Reports indicate that nearly 99% of his pay package is based on equity awards, including a major stock grant valued at around $789 million, which later appreciated significantly. The payout structure is designed to reward sustained company growth and long-term value creation, with additional performance conditions extending into 2031.

The Wall Street Journal report also highlighted a broader surge in executive compensation across major companies, with several CEOs earning over $100 million in 2025. Among them, Mitra stood out as one of the most prominent names, reinforcing the growing influence of Indian-origin leaders in global corporate markets. Another Indian-origin executive, Nikesh Arora, also appeared in the top 10 highest-paid CEOs list, further underscoring this trend.

Indian-origin physicians and long-time North Carolina residents Dr. Rakesh Gupta and Dr. Vinita Gupta have contributed $500,000 to the Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine, strengthening financial support for future medical students. The donation is aimed at expanding access to education through scholarships and academic enrichment programs.

According to the university, $100,000 from the total amount will be immediately allocated as merit-based scholarships for students enrolling in the 2026 and 2027 academic sessions. The remaining $400,000 will be placed into an endowed fund dedicated to Enrichment Scholarships, which will support students after completing their first year of medical education. The initiative is expected to provide long-term financial assistance to aspiring doctors.

The Guptas, who have lived in Fayetteville for several decades, are well known for their contributions to both healthcare and community service. Dr. Rakesh Gupta, a gastroenterologist, played an important role in conceptualizing the university’s medical school and previously served on its Board of Trustees alongside his wife.

In a statement shared by the university, the couple expressed gratitude for the opportunity to give back, describing their journey as fulfilling and enriched by strong community relationships and meaningful service experiences.

University President Stanley T. Wearden acknowledged their consistent generosity, noting that the couple has made significant contributions over the years, including major scholarship support for the medical school. He also described them as deeply compassionate and welcoming individuals whose efforts have positively impacted the institution.

The university recently honored Dr. Rakesh Gupta with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award and Dr. Vinita Gupta with the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award, recognizing their outstanding service and commitment to community welfare.

Both physicians built distinguished careers in medicine before retirement. Dr. Vinita Gupta served as a pediatrician in the U.S. Army for 25 years at Womack Army Medical Center, while Dr. Rakesh Gupta practiced gastroenterology in Fayetteville for decades. The couple originally met while studying medicine in Belgaum, India, before settling permanently in the United States.

Beyond medicine, they have remained active in community service, including helping establish a local Hindu temple and supporting various civic initiatives, while their two sons continue to work in the healthcare field.

Indian American student Riddhi Chauhan is turning leadership into action as the Battalion Commanding Officer of the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School. Responsible for leading nearly 300 cadets, she has earned recognition for her commitment to discipline, mentorship, and community service while working toward her goal of becoming a U.S. Naval Officer.

The NJROTC program is designed to prepare high school students with leadership, teamwork, and citizenship skills through military-inspired training. In her leadership position, Chauhan oversees cadet activities, supports training programs, organizes academic and STEM initiatives, and mentors younger students. She believes the experience has strengthened her confidence while teaching valuable lessons that extend beyond school.

Her journey began with a desire to improve her leadership abilities and contribute to her community. As she advanced through different leadership roles, she discovered that true leadership is about helping others succeed rather than simply holding authority. That realization motivated her to pursue a career dedicated to public service.

Balancing academics with leadership responsibilities requires careful planning and dedication. Chauhan starts many days with early morning drill practice before attending classes, followed by mentoring sessions, staff meetings, and planning activities. Weekends are often devoted to community service, competitions, leadership training, and other battalion events.

Over the years, she has served in multiple leadership positions, including Academic Commander, STEM Commander, Platoon Leader, and Inspection Commander. She has guided academic competition teams, supported robotics projects, and mentored more than 200 cadets, helping them develop confidence and leadership skills.

Looking back, Chauhan says leadership has taught her that making a positive impact on others is more important than rank. She also credits discipline, resilience, and a willingness to embrace challenges for preparing her to attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School, where she will continue pursuing her dream of joining the United States Naval Academy and serving her country.

As New Jersey heads toward a closely watched Democratic primary, 28-year-old former White House official Jay Vaingankar is positioning himself as a candidate of generational change, aiming to bring younger leadership into American politics. He is also seeking to make history by becoming both the first Gen Z and the first Indian American representative from New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District.

The open seat became available after long-serving Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman announced her retirement, drawing a competitive field of Democratic contenders. With the primary just days away, the race has gained attention not only for its crowded lineup but also for the possibility of reshaping representation in a district that includes a significant Indian American population.

Vaingankar has centered his campaign on the idea that voters are increasingly disillusioned with traditional political structures and are seeking leaders who better reflect present-day community concerns. He has argued that Washington needs a generational shift, emphasizing responsiveness and accountability to local issues.

He explained that his decision to enter the race was influenced by conversations with residents following the retirement announcement. Many, he said, expressed frustration with repeated election of long-established politicians and the perception that leadership change is overdue. He believes voters want representatives who are actively engaged with everyday concerns rather than relying on political tradition or seniority.

A key focus of his campaign is affordability, particularly the rising cost of living. Drawing from his experience working in the Department of Energy during his time in the White House, Vaingankar said he witnessed firsthand how economic pressures affect families. He highlighted frequent price increases in essential goods, along with growing concerns over property taxes and household expenses.

He argued that while the cost of living continues to rise, the quality of services and goods has not necessarily improved, creating additional strain on working families. This issue, he said, remains the most common concern he hears from voters across the district.

Vaingankar is also advocating strongly for clean energy expansion. He believes renewable sources such as solar, wind, and nuclear power can simultaneously reduce costs, create jobs, and address climate challenges. He rejected what he described as a false choice between affordability and sustainability, arguing that both goals can be achieved together.

The Democratic primary is expected to be highly competitive, with more than ten candidates in the race. Vaingankar noted that vote splitting could allow a candidate to win with a relatively small share of support, potentially as low as 15%. Despite the crowded field, he remains optimistic that younger voters and diverse communities will play a decisive role.

He also highlighted increasing political participation within the Indian American community, noting that thousands have registered to vote in response to the campaign. He emphasized that greater representation for South Asian Americans could have broader national significance.

Born in Trenton to immigrant parents from Mumbai, Vaingankar grew up in East Windsor and Hightstown before studying at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He later worked in the Biden administration before returning to New Jersey to launch his congressional campaign.

With the primary approaching, the contest is being closely watched as a potential turning point for both generational and cultural representation in the district’s political landscape.

Their presence underscored the importance of collaboration between research institutions and industry stakeholders in driving innovation.

The newly established centre is intended to act as a hub for deep-tech development, startup incubation, and partnerships between academia and industry. It forms part of the broader Wadhwani Innovation Network, an initiative aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and technology-driven growth through strategic investments and institutional collaboration.

In addition to the innovation centre, IISc also launched a new startup accelerator named InQubate. This platform is specifically designed to support early-stage startups working in the quantum technology domain. It will function within IISc’s broader quantum ecosystem, which includes the Quantum Research Park, the Wadhwani-IISc Innovation Centre, FQCI, and INUP.
