Editorial February 2017

Dear Readers,

February is always a fun month for us (I realize I say this every month!). Like last year, we are proud to highlight the NRIs across the Indian diaspora, particularly those from our own communities in the United States. The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards and Padma awards (Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri), announced every January, recognize awardees for their excellence and hard work in a variety of fields.

In this issue, we highlight six NRIs living in the US who were awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman. Readers can also take a look at the full list of 2017 Padma awardees. A prestigious honor, NRIs have been fortunate over the years to be recognized for their community involvement and accomplishments.

Moving on to younger generations, we are pleased to feature interviews with two up and coming Indian Americans making waves in their respective fields. Amruta Houde, a public health advocate, and Niraj Antani, an Ohio Representative, are pursuing their passions, while also making an impact on their communities. We look forward to seeing what the future has in store for these two impressive individuals.

For Floridians, February is also Hindu Heritage Month. This month’s must-read books is a listing of prominent titles about Hinduism, written by scholars and Swamis alike. While by no means exhaustive, these books are a great start for anyone looking to learn more. Have you read a good book recently? Email your suggestions to info@deshvidesh.com.

We are also excited to announce our next two MyShadi Bridal Expos! Come visit us in Tampa at the Tampa Convention Center on April 16 and in Ft. Lauderdale at the Bonaventure Resort & Spa on April 30. As always, the Expo will feature vendors showcasing the latest in wedding and event trends. Don’t miss attending the free show and the chance to win a free trip to India – you can register to attend online at www.myshadibridalexpo.com.

Until next time, happy reading!
