He catapulted to fame when Michelle Obama wore his design on an official visit to India in 2015. The New York-based designer from Rourkela in Odisha launched Bibhu Mohapatra – Purple Label in 2009. He has helped traditional weavers of Odisha by designing a collection of hand woven silks. He has a namesake fur collection and a fine jewelry collection.
