Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, Arjun Kapoor, Zoya Akhtar kick-start the 10th year celebrations Indian Film Festival of Melbourne!
On August 8, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne kickstarted their tenth-year celebrations with a grand opening press conference that took place this morning at Melbourne’s Central Business District. The award winning film festival, considered amongst the largest Indian festivals in the world in the presence of Bollywood’s who’s who, amidst much frenzy and fanfare. Taking charge of the event, Mitu Bhowmick Lange, director of the festival introduced the programs of the festival. Given that the list includes names like SRK, Karan Johar, and Tabu, none of who require an introduction, the excitement in the air was palpable. Martin Foley, Minister for Creative Industries for the Victorian Legislative Assembly, was present at the do.

Shah Rukh Khan, the guest of honour at the festival was received with great love by the audience. The superstar, who has earlier shot Chak De India (one of his career’s most memorable film) eloquently spoke about how much the city means to him. In his trademark charm, he quipped, “Many years ago in 2006-07, I came here when I was a rising superstar giving hit films after hit films. And now I am back here again, still, a rising superstar not making as many hit films (chuckles), as much as I would want to do so. I thank everyone for the opportunity to speak here. When I was shooting for Chak De in the city, I used to play Trivial (a game) with crew members on set. Because of being an Indian film actor, we often feel localized. It’s thus heartening that because of the Indian diaspora – the second generation of Indians here (people like Mitu) Indian cinema is getting noticed. It’s extremely gratifying and makes every Indian proud. I speak for everyone on the dais today that we are happy to be here.”
Witty and sharp as always, SRK’s energy was matched by long-time collaborator and dear friend, Karan. As their wisecracks entertained audiences, they also spoke about the overarching theme of courage. Karan said, “I have to start by thanking Mitu who has been such a strong force right through the festival. It’s not the films but the people behind the festival who make it what it is. When I see this fantastic panel and we say the theme is courage, I say the panel is reflective of the glorious courage of our films and changing the face of Indian cinema. It represents three feature films that have changed the way we look at Indian cinema and how it has travelled across the globe and will continue to do so. There is Super Deluxe, Andhadhun and Gully Boy. All of these have appealed not only to the diaspora but to international audiences across the globe, making Indian cinema so proud. And what to say about Shah Rukh Khan, he fully represents superstardom. I firmly believe, in the era, we belonged to, the term is understood because of him. It’s not just about his large heart but his tremendous presence and aura. The fact that he is an outstanding actor is hugest icing on the cake. I look forward to my time here and all the selection of movies is on point and resonant with the theme of courage.”
Also in attendance were Zoya Akhtar, Rima Das, Thiagarajan Kumararaja, Vijay Sethupathi, Arjun Kapoor, Tabu, Gayathrie Shankar and filmmaker Sriram Raghavan. Mitu says, “It’s been 10 wonderful years of the festival. I’m so grateful for all the guests who have come here year on year and been part of the festival. I’m extremely humbled and excited to have Shah Rukh Khan here as our chief guest and to have the friend of our festival and one of the best film directors of India, Karan Johar. And the esteemed panel of guests. We take immense pride in the diversity and inclusion we represent at the festival and this year we’re celebrating the courage and who better to display courage than these amazing filmmakers like Zoya, Thiagarajan, Sriram, Rima.”
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will go on from the 8th of August to the 15th of August in Melbourne, Australia. The festival will screen over 60 films from all across India and the subcontinent in over 22 languages. Film aficionados will get the opportunity to interact with their favorite artists and filmmakers at the festival in the event, pose questions at Panel Discussions and Q&A sessions post each screening. UN endorses Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s film on Rituparno Ghosh
Filmmaker Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s film A tribute to Rituparno Ghosh: Season’s Greetings has become the first film endorsed by the United Nation’s Free and Equal campaign that aims at raising awareness against homophobic and transphobic violence and discrimination. Reportedly, Ram Kamal Mukherjee said that the film started out with the intention of acquainting the audience with Rituparno’s work. However, the issues faced by the LGBTQIA community gradually became a part of the film.

The historic verdict on Section 377 was made a few days ahead of the shoot of the film began. Since Rituparno was always vocal about the community’s rights, the director only found it appropriate to incorporate it.

Mukherjee took the film to the UN on the insistence of the leading ladies of the film, Celina Jaitly and Lillete Dubey. The director was unsure of this as he thought the UN will be unable to relate to it as it is set in India. However, he was proved wrong. The film also marks the debut of transgender actor Shree Ghatak.
UN Official Rikke Hennum said that films like these can play a critical role in starting and sustaining conversations to help raise awareness of some of the issues the film touches upon. The film deals with issues of acceptance of same-sex relationships to the lives of LGBTQIA people in India.
Exclusive: Kiara Advani, Alia Bhatt, Sara Ali Khan, Shraddha Kapoor are out of the race for Rohit Shetty and Farah Khan’s Satte Pe Satta!
As Rohit Shetty and Farah Khan are on the brink of finalizing their project, the remake of the 1982 blockbuster Satte Pe Satta with Hrithik Roshan, the race for the lead actress is getting hotter and narrower, with some of today’s top actresses being ruled out because they are too young to play the role. There has been talk of almost every actress being approached to play Hema Malini’s role (Indu) for the movie – from Kriti Sanon to Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif but fact is, none of them have been approached.

Says a trade source, “Rohit Shetty’s Satte Pe Satta remake, directed by Farah Khan, is one of the hottest projects in Bollywood today with some of the top actresses falling over each other trying to bag the female lead. Many young and mature actresses have sent feelers to Farah that they are interested in the movie. Once Hrithik gives the nod to the project, it will be the hottest announcement this year and which actress won’t want to be a part of it? But the makers are sure that they are not making De De Pyaar De where Ajay Devgn was older than his girlfriend. They need somebody closer to Hrithik’s age. Which also rules out Rohit Shetty’s Simmba heroine, Sara Ali Khan. Also, the lead actress in Satte Pe Satta needs to be mature and have the personality to play Hema Malini’s role. Indu was as important as Ravi Anand (Amitabh Bachchan) as she trains her six brothers-in-law from hooligans to more stylish men. The remake needs an actress-performer who can match Hrithik’s fine histrionics.”
The source adds that now the race seems to have narrowed down to Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif. “Apparently, Katrina is Farah’s choice while Rohit prefers Deepika. There were feelers sent to Farah and Rohit from Kiara Advani, Shraddha Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s camp, to play the female lead opposite Hrithik but they were told that they were too young to play Hema Malini’s role. Most actresses are very close to Farah, including Sonam Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Huma Qureshi, Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone. Kareena Kapoor Khan would have been great for the role – being a fabulous actress and having the emotional depths to portray such a role but she and Hrithik may not work together.”
The movie was about seven brothers (orphans), living on a farmhouse like hooligans without etiquette and manners, led by their oldest brother Ravi Anand (Amitabh Bachchan). They are taught the social niceties by a nurse Indu (Hema Malini) who falls in love with Ravi. But everything becomes chaotic when Ravi’s lookalike and impersonator, Babu, turns up, kidnaps Ravi and turns everything in the Anand family upside down.
The remake Satte Pe Satta is a much-coveted script with many stars vying it. Apart from Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, Satte Pe Satta (1982) featured Sachin Pilgaonkar, Shakti Kapoor, Paintal, Sudhir, Inderjeet and Vikram Sahu as the rest of the six Anand brothers and Amjad Khan, Ranjeeta Kaur, Sarika, Kanwaljit Singh, Prema Narayan, Mac Mohan and Kalpana Iyer in other roles. The movie is an adaptation of the American musical film Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The original Satte Pe Satta (1982) was produced by Romu Sippy and directed by Raj N Sippy and the remake rights are said to be with Rajesh Vasani, of movie marketing firm, Paras Publicity Services.
Taapsee Pannu speaks up on criticism against Akshay Kumar who is prominently featuring on Mission Mangal posters
After the tales of heroism like Airlift, Rustom and Kesari, Akshay Kumar’s next, Mission Mangal, celebrates the power of women scientists and their achievements who were responsible for the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM). The film features Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Kirti Kulhari and Nithya Menen. While the film celebrates the achievements of these women, it also received criticism since Akshay has been prominently featured on the posters.

When asked about Akshay Kumar receiving the spotlight while the film is about the women, Taapsee Pannu said that one can’t deny the fact that Akshay’s face on the poster will result in huge footfalls. She said that they can’t escape the fact that it is a commercial requirement since it is a big-budget film. She added that five women put together won’t be able to add up to the opening figures that Akshay can get singlehandedly. Taapsee further said that if the women in the film weren’t there, the film will still open with big numbers since Akshay is attached to the film. She said that their absence would have reduced the star quotient but wouldn’t have made much difference.
Taapsee further said that those who are raging about the posters wait for reviews to come out if the film is women-centric. They wait for the weekend and reviews before they watch it. She said that Akshay is taking all of them for promotions and standing up for them. She mentioned that during Delhi promotions, he was made to sit separately but he made sure to sit with them. She said that they are on their way to become equal.
Mission Mangal is directed by Jagan Shakti. Presented by Fox Star Studios, Produced by Cape of Good Films, Hope Productions and Fox Star Studios, the film releases on 15th August 2019.

When contacted, the musical duo Ajay – Atul had this to say – “It’s an honour for us to be associated with an iconic show like Kaun Banega Crorepati. When we were approached for the KBC tune, the question for us was not what we can do with it, but how much leap we can take with a melody that has already been etched in the minds of millions. But we are happy with the new flavour that we have managed to infuse in the tune – it has an orchestral symphony that makes the original melody sound more epic and magnificent. We hope that this composition strikes a chord with the audience just like the original one.”
Salman Khan imposes mobile ban on sets of Dabangg 3
Salman Khan commenced work on Dabangg 3 a few weeks ago. While the film production is underway, we hear that the actor has imposed a strict mobile ban on sets of the film. For those of you wondering why Salman went ahead and recommended a mobile ban, let us tell you that it is an attempt to keep not just Salman but also Mahesh Manjrekar’s daughter Saiee’s look under wraps.

Commenting on the same, a source from the sets says, “Salman Khan will be seen playing two different avatars in the film, one being himself and the other a younger version of his character. And Saiee has been roped in to feature opposite Khan’s second avatar. Now, this no mobile phones on sets rule is an attempt to keep her look under wraps for as long as possible.” Further the source adds, “In fact, Salman Khan himself personally asked for a ban of mobile phones to ensure compliance.”
As for the film, Dabangg 3 is being directed by Prabhu Dheva and is said to be a prequel to the previous two films. While Salman will be seen at two different ages, Saiee Manjrekar’s role is that of Chulbul Pandey’s love interest in his younger days. Besides them the film will also see Sonakshi Sinha and Arbaaz Khan reprising their roles from the previous films.
