The Oscars of Bollywood: Fashion Extravaganza at IIFA 2017

The Indian Oscars is one of the world’s most-watched entertainment shows, with audiences around totalling over 8 million people worldwide. The green carpet is very much a part of what makes IIFA special. Celebrities love to save their best looks for their IIFA appearances.

Here are some well known labels found at this year’s IIFA.

Famous Bollywood actresses such as Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin, Aditi Rao Hydari, Bipasha Basu and Dia Mirza who have attended an IIFA ceremony are sure to wear a Sabya outfit at least once.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee is an Indian fashion designer from Kolkata. Since 1999, he has sold designer merchandise using the label Sabyasachi. Mukherjee is an Associate Designer Member of the Fashion Design Council of India and the youngest board member of the National Museum of Indian Cinema. He has designed costumes for Bollywood films such as Guzaarish, Baabul, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Raavan, and English Vinglish.

Gauri and Nainika Karan launched their label Gauri & Nainika in January 2002 in New Delhi. An evening wear brand with styles ranging from cocktail dresses to elaborate bespoke gowns, the label offers glamorous, elegant and chic clothing for women. Sonakshi Sinha, Kajal Aggarwal, Yami Gautam and Anushka Sharma are just a few of the bollywood stars who have graced Gauri and Nainika ‘s creations on the IIFA green carpet.

Inspired by European fashion history, art, music, books, personalities, theatre, old Hollywood, red carpet glamour and pictures of their mother from the 70s, the brand has always had an extremely feminine and romantic design philosophy with styles that are luxurious yet understated. With a strong emphasis on fabric, cut & color, the designs focus on shape and flattering silhouettes. By combining tailoring with drapery, the garments are meticulously crafted and have a timeless appeal where old world charm, fantasy and elegance are brought bang up to date. Gauri & Nainika Karan grew up in New Delhi. Though originally students of economics, they were always inclined towards fashion and the creative arts. After studying at The National Institute of Fashion Technology, they launched their ready-to-wear label Gauri & Nainika. They grew up inspired by the classics and the romantic look of old Hollywood heroines such as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly whose timeless elegance has been incorporated in their designs.

Their creative bent of mind and entrepreneurial streak has placed Shantanu Mehra and Nikhil Mehra in the global fashion circuit with their label Shantanu and Nikhil that was launched in 1999.

Shantanu and Nikhil creations cater to youthfulness and a person who wishes to be stylish and trendy with its vivacious colors and graceful silhouettes. The brand targets people with varied tastes from the effervescent, to the classy and chic. Shantanu and Nikhil have made a mark with their haute couture for both men and women ranging from traditional and casual chic, to power dressing line of clothing for the urban populace that desire a perfect blend of conservative and contemporary styles.

Designer duo Shantanu and Nikhil have long been popular with the glitterati, and the IIFA green carpet sees both male and female celebrities sport the label. From the draped bandhgala worn by Riteish Deshmukh and Shilpa Shetty’s cutaway gown at IIFA Rocks 2016, to the voluminous forest-green concoction preferred by Aditi Rao Hydari and Bhumi Pednekar’s lavender dream — the variety of looks that the label affords its starry clientele is perhaps one of the reasons why it’s so popular. Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, this twosome is famously known as “the boys” in the fashion circuit. They are the most favored designers of the Bachchan family.

At IIFA 2016, Sonakshi Sinha and Bipasha Basu caught fashion-watchers’ eyes by wearing Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla designer outfits. The two are considered first among those who made their way to success, attention, fame and hype. The Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla label has made its mark internationally, beginning with a range of exclusive shawls that sold under the Shakira Caine name at Harvey Nichols and Harrods in London, Neiman Marcus, Bergdof Goodman in New York, and Knightsbridge, UK on the designer floor.

In December 2003, Abu-Sandeep were presented with the National award for best costumes in Devdas where they designed costumes for the pivotal characters of Madhuri Dixit, Shahrukh Khan and Jackie Shroff. In 2005, Abu-Sandeep were the creative directors for the show “Lakme Fashion House” on Star One. They were the creative directors for the show.

Manish Malhotra

From his work with Hindi cinema’s influential leading-ladies to launching his eponymous label in 2005, Manish Malhotra tells design stories in a language profuse with elegance, ultra-femininity and unapologetic glamour. 2015 was a milestone year for Manish Malhotra as it marked 25 years of his association with Hindi cinema as a designer and stylist and 10 years since the creation of the eponymous label.

Priyanka Chopra, Madhuri Dixit, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Shriya Saran, Sridevi are just a few of the ladies who have all sported Manish Malhotra’s creations on the IIFA green carpet.

In 2013, Manish Malhotra was the first designer to have opened the largest, Indian single-brand couture store sprawled over 9,000 sq.ft in Delhi. The following year, the label marked a turnover of over 1 billion Indian Rupee making it one of the first Indian luxury fashion houses to achieve this milestone.

Manish Malhotra started his career as a model, while studying at the Elphinstone College in Mumbai. Though he did not have formal fashion design training, Manish’s love for sketching, passion for cinema and penchant for clothes, saw him veer towards costume styling.

Anamika Khanna
Anamika KhannaAnamika Khanna, born in Jodhpur, July 19, 1971, is an Indian fashion designer with her own label.

Even though Anamika Khanna is Sonam Kapoor’s favourite designer, stars Sonakshi Sinha and Neha Dhupia have also rocked her designs at IIFA Awards in the past.

She has been covered by the Business of Fashion magazine as an Indian designer who has blended traditional Indian textiles and techniques with Western silhouette and tailoring. She is the first Indian designer to have an international label: Ana mika. She is also the first female Indian fashion designer to display her collections during Paris Fashion Week held in 2007. Anamika was offered an exclusive contract by British Retail Giant Harrod’s after her participation in London Fashion Week, 2010. Her philanthropist side was evident when she helped raise large amounts for the Tata cancer hospitals children’s wing and for the Akshay Patra Foundation with a show in London. Anamika Khanna was one of three designers who presented their collections in Khadi at a fashion show held by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) in coordination with Gujarat State Khadi and Village Industries for Narendra Modi’s made in India project. She is among the first Indian fashion designers to present their collections in Pakistan as part of the Bridal Asia event. She collaborated with the brand Bvlgari to launch them in New Delhi and did a private event with them in Singapore.

Anamika Khanna has been instrumental towards the modernization of Indian craft through her modern wear made from Indian textiles. She has reinterpreted the Maharashtrian nine-yard sari to create dhoti-pants.They are actually dhoti style saris and have become her signature creations. They have been worn by leading Bollywood superstars like Sonam Kapoor on multiple occasions. Anamika Khanna has set a new trend through her draped saris, and is well-known for introducing the tulip drape, the wavy drape, and the two-pallu-in-dhoti drape.

Anamika Khanna has designed collections for a number of Bollywood movies like Mausam, Fashion, Aisha, and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. She will be creating the design for the lead actress of the movie Prem Ratan Dhan Payo scheduled for release in the year 2015.

Her collections featuring Trousseau, Prêt and Couture have been worn by Bollywood superstars. She operates from her studio situated in Kolkata. Anamika Khanna’s creations are sold in stores across India.
