Indra Nooyi Each year, the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) presents the Ellis Island Medal of Honor to native-born and naturalized US citizens who “embody the spirit of America in their celebration of patriotism, tolerance, brotherhood and diversity.” Awarded to a select group of individuals, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor acknowledges the immigrant experience and recognizes the accomplishments made by these individuals across fields. This year is no different than previous years in that several prominent South Asian received the prestigious award.

Dr. Adil H. Haider, MD, MPH, FACS: Dr. Haider is a trauma surgeon, public health researcher, and the Kessler Director of Center for Surgery and Public Health at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Indra Nooyi: PepsiCo CEO since 2006 and chairman since 2007, Nooyi has since become a champion for diversity and women’s rights.

Dr Annapoorna S Kini: Dr. Kini is a cardiologist and Professor of Cardiology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

Dinesh Paliwal: Paliwal has served as the president and CEO at Harman International Industries since July 2007 and later became the chairman in 2008.
