Stretching before an exercise is too often misunderstood. Be careful not to confuse warming up with static stretching. Static stretching involves holding a stretch for 20-30 seconds; however stretching cold muscles can lead to injury. There has been much debate about the benefits of stretching before exercise due to varying factors in the available studies. No definitive, strong conclusions have been made, however it is true that an “active warm up” is greatly beneficial for the body. Say you want to go for a run – before you begin, it’s critical to increase the body’s overall temperature and warm up the muscles. The best way to approach this is through “active” stretching. So before running, it’s ideal to focus on a low impact move like brisk walking. This is not only a great warm up, but also activates those same muscle groups that will be utilized during running. In this way, active, or dynamic stretching, aids the body by increasing the range of motion and blood flow to the muscles. This increases synovial fluid in the joints, arouses neural connections between mind and muscle, and sparks the body’s metabolic shift. You are prepping your body for moderate to intense activity, decreasing the chance of injury later.

I usually eat 3 big meals; should I be eating several smaller meals a day?

The idea of eating all day long in smaller portions is often referred to as “grazing.” Grazing has its benefits, which include controlling one’s appetite, feeling energized, and increasing the variety of nutrients consumed. Of course, benefits are user-dependent and everyone responds differently. But when the practice of eating less and more frequently is applied properly, the improvements can make a world of a difference. When eating fewer meals, be sure to watch the caloric intake – eating more meals does NOT constitute as eating more calories! It is best to break up the larger meals into smaller portions throughout your day. You want to keep or decrease your overall total caloric consumption (depending on your individual goals). Research shows eating more frequently can give the body more opportunity to sit down and overeat. This can lead to serious issues. The trick is to eat when you’re actually in need, but not so ravenous that you overeat. Ask yourself if you are truly hungry or just bored. Keep fruits, veggies and healthy snacks on hand when feeling low on energy. This helps increase levels of satiety. It may be difficult at first, but practicing this technique over time can form a powerful new habit. You will find yourself less hungry and full of energy, lowering the intensity of post-meal crashes (we’ve all felt that 3 o’clock crash!). And remember, always balance your eating habits with the practice of daily exercise.

What’s the best thing to eat before working out?
A question I have been asked by many! Before a workout, it’s best to maintain a good balance of carbs and protein. Feel free to modify as you deem delicious! Keep in mind you want to eat about 30 – 60 minutes in advance to give your body the chance to digest and absorb.

Ask the Expert

The new year is fully upon us. It’s a new chance to progress with our goals – and for many of us, one of those goals is better health. So while you load up on protein shakes and extra daal, buy those new running shoes, and sign up for that spin class, don’t forget about your vision health. Asians (notably South & East Asians) are genetically and environmentally susceptible to poor vision. Be it from our genes or from the excessive hours spent in front of computer screens and textbooks, our vulnerability must be combated with proper precautionary habits.

Take time to be good to your eyes. Eat well, stay hydrated, and rest often. We must take care of our vision now, so we may continue to see the new years ahead.

What kinds of foods are important for vision health?
All of us have heard our moms tell us to eat carrots because it’s “good for your eyes.” It’s true; they’re packed with beta-carotene, a type of Vitamin A. The best way to reap the benefits is to balance it out with leafy greens such as spinach or kale, and eggs. All of these contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidants that act as natural sunblock. They also slow down macular degeneration and cataract formation. If you eat fish, salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon aids in prevention of age-related macular degeneration and relieves severe eye dryness. Not a fan of fish? Try incorporating olive oil into your cooking, free of trans fat and low in saturated fat. Other foods you can try include nuts, corn, and dark berries.

A lot of my work involves a computer screen. What can I do for my eyes?
Unfortunately there’s not much we can do about the nature of our tasks at work or school. However, you can practice eye exercises that can relieve the eye strain that comes with reading in poor light and staring at screens. Every 20 minutes, close your eyes for 20 seconds. This can help with rewetting the corneal surface and bring moisture to your eyes. Be aware that as we concentrate on a screen or book, we tend to blink less often, increasing dryness and irritation. Take frequent eye breaks from your work and focus on an object in the distance, blinking often. To help relieve muscular tension behind the eyes, at bedtime quietly look up, down, and side to side holding for about 10 seconds each position.

I wear a lot of makeup, is this okay?
Whether over long wedding weekends, at social outings, or at work, many of us wear makeup. There is nothing wrong with this, as long as we take steps to remove it all at the end of the day. Be sure to do some research before venturing to the makeup store. Find brands that are organic, chemical-free, or just hypoallergenic. Replace your mascara and eyeliner every 2-3 months. Bacteria will deposit and grow after frequent use of the applicator, so wash your brushes every so often. If you wear contacts, remove your contacts, then remove your eye makeup using a quality makeup remover or warm water and soap. Remember to take “days-off”! Go makeup free, and treat your eyes to warm compresses. Ophthalmologists often recommend a drop of baby shampoo to clean the eyelids and eyelashes 1-2 times a week.

I want to preserve the health of my eyes and prevent damage. What else can I do?
Simple. Be good to your eyes! Pamper them like you pamper your hair and nails. Your eyes are working every second of the day, even at night during your deeper sleep cycles. So don’t miss annual vision check-ups – you and your doctor need to stay on top of any signs of premature degeneration. It also helps to buy a pair of quality sunglasses. Excessive UV light from the sun can damage the tissues in the eyelids and the lens, leading to cataracts and certain cancers. Be sure to get enough rest. Lack of sleep can actually make worse a modern condition termed Computer Vision Syndrome, which includes dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, neck and back pain. Head massages with essential oils can help alleviate these symptoms and promote wakefulness.

Recent college graduates have different financial goals than couples in their 40s. A newly married couple may be interested in purchasing a new home, whereas an older couple wants to maintain financial security well into retirement. Whatever the situation, a financial advisor or planner can assist with major financial decisions.

While some choose the do-it-yourself approach to securing their financial future, others seek the assistance of financial professionals. Many even procrastinate when it comes to making crucial financial decisions simply because the process is too daunting. Seema Ramroop, CRPS, Senior Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch, works with her clients “… at different stages of their growth and to help [them] seek their preferred lifestyles through a one-on-one relationship.” A financial advisor is able to answer the many confusing and complicated questions you may have related to investments, insurance, inheritance, college funding, retirement funds, and more.

The prospect of choosing and working with a financial adviser is overwhelming, and the process of selecting a financial advisor may seem like no easy feat. How do you choose an individual who understands your needs (and those of your family) as well as your financial goals for the future? Whether you are buying a business, saving for college, or funding your retirement, your main goal is to find someone you not only trust, but also formulates the right strategy for securing your financial future. Finding the right financial planner is the first step to securing your family’s financial future and ensuring all your financial goals are met.

Factors to Consider

When researching financial advisors, remember that not all financial professionals are the same. Stockbrokers, accountants, and insurance agents provide specialized services like buying stocks and mutual funds or tax-related assistance. Financial planners, on the other hand, provide guidance about investments and insurance as well as about major financial decisions like buying a house or business, retirement, and college funding.

During the process of researching and meeting with potential financial planners, keep your financial goals front and center. Samant Sharma, CFP, Wealth Management Advisor, advises clients to “look at their goals and needs, and ask questions regarding the planning process as it relates to achieving those goals.” In addition to keeping a list of goals, consider the following factors when choosing a financial planner:

Credentials: Look for someone who is licensed and has gone through rigorous testing and training. A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) goes through training on regulations and ethics and must commit to ongoing education to retain their license, so check that their credentials are current.

Experience: How experienced is the advisor? Has the financial planner weathered economic slumps? Are they familiar with types of financial goals you hope to achieve? Review their qualifications and do research on their website.

References: As with any major decision, ask family and friends for recommendations. Does the individual have a good track record? Do they make appropriate recommendations and maintain periodic check-ins?

Reports: Will you receive quarterly and annual reports? Does the advisor check-in periodically to gauge progress and make adjustments when needed? A good financial planner will not disappear once the checks have been written, but rather maintain a strong working relationship.

Compensation: Some financial planners are paid by flat fee by the hour while others rely solely on commissions based on your investments. Commission-based planners may be motivated to sell you certain products, so it is best search for a fiduciary that has pledged to keep the client’s best interest in mind. When making payments, checks should always be written to a brokerage, insurance or financial services firm – not to the individual.

Prepare for Your First Meeting

Once a financial advisor has been selected, what next? Ramroop advises clients to first begin “by asking themselves what is it they are trying to achieve financially.” Whether you want to buy a house or ensure you have enough saved for retirement, your goals will frame the meeting. Sharma adds that clients should “gather financial information, assets and liabilities, to allow the Advisor to better provide possible solutions for you to consider.”

When sitting down with your financial planner, keep a list of questions ready so all concerns are addressed. Questions to ask during the initial meeting may include:

How do I know if I have enough savings to fund my goals?

How can I afford to keep up with rising healthcare costs?

What would happen to my family if we lost one or both of our incomes?

Do I have enough cash flows from my business and what are other sources of liquidity?

What strategies should I use to create a family legacy and be tax efficient?

What strategies can I use to plan for retirement?

What is the best way to leave money with a charity?

Tips from the Experts

The experts share their advice for those beginning the process of financial planning.

Seema Ramroop: It is a robust process, and it can be very easy to become overwhelmed by it initially … Your advisor’s role is to be a guide and to provide clarity for all the minutia.

Samant Sharma: … Consistency of two-way communication is key. Updating your Financial Advisor as your life evolves will help match what your money is doing with what your life is doing.

Tax time is here! What changed, and how will it impact your tax return?

Don’t you feel Income Taxes are the hardest subject in the world to understand? That is exactly what Albert Einstein said way back when: “The hardest thing in the world to understand is income taxes.” Taxes have gotten more complicated since then – most are dazed and confused when it comes to their tax returns. insight on 2015 IRS Tax code and provide a quick reference guide for tax preparation.

General Tax Updates

Tax Bracket Adjustment: The 2015 tax bracket has been updated to reflect 1.6% increase factoring inflation. The top 1% of high income earners including individuals with over $413K in Taxable income will be paying out 39.6% income tax on their Gross Taxable Income.

Changes to Standard Deduction – The standard deduction amount has increased from prior year:

$6,300 for Single/Married Filing Separate

$12,600 for Married Filing Jointly

$9,250 for Head of Household

Alternative Minimum Tax – The alternative minimum tax was set to limit tax breaks for Americans looking to reduce their overall tax bill. As of 2015, the AMT income exemption for taking this tax break is set for individuals who earn over $53,600 and married filing jointly couples at $83,400 in taxable income.

Healthcare Tax Updates

Affordable Care Act (ACA) Penalty – The ACA penalty has increased in 2015. The fee for not having health coverage in 2015 is the greater of:

2 percent of your yearly household income. (Only the amount of income above the tax filing threshold, about $10,150 for an individual, is used to calculate the penalty.) Or,

$325 per person, ($162.50 per child under 18). The maximum penalty per family using this method is $975.

Health Expense Account (HSAs & FSAs) – Individuals who have a Health Savings Account (HSA) in 2015, the contribution limit has been raised to $3,350 for the single plan and $6,650 for the family plan.

In addition, the Health Savings Account (HSA) has three major tax savings:

Contributions are tax deductible

Growth of the HSA (outside of contributions) are tax-free

Withdrawals are tax-free if used to pay for medical expenses

On the other side, for those individuals who opted to use a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you will also receive an increase in the total contributions limit to equate to $2,550, up $50 from 2014 that is required to be spent in the 2015 plan year.

Retirement Plan Updates

401(K) Contribution Limits – In 2015, employees can now contribute up to $18,000, which is up from the $17,500 limit imposed in 2014. In addition to the increase in 401(k) contributions, there is also the increase in catch-up contributions for individuals who are age 50 or over at the end of the calendar year. For 2015, the total catch-up contributions equate to $6,000 per person and are allowed under a 401(k), 403(b), SARSEP, and governmental 457(b) plans.

Limitation on IRA rollovers – As of 2015, you are limited to one indirect rollover from your IRA account to another IRA account per year. With an indirect rollover, a plan participant is allowed to withdraw (through a distribution) all of their retirement balance without taking on a penalty if they decide to enroll the balance into a new IRA account. Due to the 2015 change, indirect rollovers are now only allowed to be performed once a year.

However, if you want to transfer your IRA balances through a direct rollover, i.e., trustee to trustee, then there are no limitations on how many times this can occur. As long as your retirement balance stays out of your hands during the transfer (i.e., direct rollover), you can perform this process as many times as you like.

The Saver’s Credit (Retirement Savings Contributions Credit) – Low and moderate income workers are provided an additional tax credit to help them save for retirement. According to the IRS, the saver’s credit helps offset part of the first $2,000 workers voluntarily contribute to IRAs and 401(k) plans and similar workplace retirement programs.

In 2015, the saver’s credit increased by $1,000 for married-filing-jointly couples who make less than $61,000. The credit was also increased by $500 for individual taxpayers with incomes less than $30,500.

Other 2015 Tax Changes

The personal exemption for Tax Year 2015 rises to $4,000.

The 2015 maximum Earned Income Credit amount is $6,242 for taxpayers filing jointly who have three or more qualifying children, up from a total of $6,143 for Tax Year 2014.

Estates of decedents who die during 2015 have a basic exclusion amount of $5,430,000, up from a total of $5,340,000 for estates of decedents who died in 2014.

Under the small business healthcare tax credit, the maximum credit is phased out based on the employer’s number of full-time equivalent employees in excess of 10 and the employer’s average annual wages in excess of $25,800 for Tax Year 2015, up from $25,400 for 2014.

Foreign Bank Account Reporting (FBAR)

FBAR was created as part of a US initiative to uncover hidden monies in offshore accounts. The IRS is forcing those with money in overseas bank accounts to disclose those accounts if balances exceed the threshold. Keep in mind that those filing FBAR aren’t taxed on the balance of the accounts or anything of the sort—it’s truly just a reporting requirement so the IRS knows what money lies overseas.

Any US person with a foreign account balance of $10,000 or more at any point during the tax year will need to file. The threshold is also an aggregate amount—meaning, if you have multiple accounts, it’s the total balance of all of your accounts that trigger a filing requirement. So, if you are thinking that keeping $3,500 in one account and $7,500 in another will enable you to avoid filing, you are incorrect. This also applies to those who simply have signing authority over an overseas account. That’s an important thing to remember, as the account doesn’t have to be YOUR account. To explain further, signature or authority means the authority of an individual to control the disposition of money, funds or other assets held in a financial account by direct communication to the person with whom the financial account is maintained.

Along with your bank account balances you also need to report Foreign stock or securities held in a financial account at a foreign financial institution. The account itself must be reported but the contents of the account do not need to be reported separately, Financial account held at a foreign branch of a US bank, Foreign mutual funds and Foreign-issued life insurance or annuity contract with a cash-value.

FBAR is filed separately to the Department of the Treasury. You have to submit it electronically through the BSA e-filing site. This form is also necessary if you hold joint accounts. Your spouse would sign this form to allow you to file on their behalf. Keep in mind that if your spouse has other accounts you are not on that he/she needs to file (i.e. individual accounts), they must file their FBAR separately (including the FBAR for your joint account). The filing deadline is June 30th each year and unlike your Federal Tax Return, no extensions are available.

For those whose lack of filing was non-willful (meaning you truly didn’t know about your reporting obligation), the fine can be $10,000 per violation. If it is determined that you purposely avoided filing, the fine can be $100,000 or 50% of the balance of the account at the time of the violation (whichever is greater).

The IRS has created two amnesty programs to help you get caught up. The program most helpful to expats is the Streamlined Filing Procedures. This program is available to US citizens living in both the US and abroad and all who have failed to file due to lack of knowledge are eligible. To file under this program, you will file the last 3 years of Federal Tax Returns (if you haven’t already done so) as well as the last 6 years of FBARs. The FBAR filings will be done electronically, just as they would if you filed on time. It is extremely important that you get caught up if you are behind in your filings.

Some say a bride’s wedding day, is the most important day of her life. A special moment, when two people commit to loving and caring for each other through the highs and lows of life. And on that special day, a bride wants to look and feel her best. Her makeup should enhance all of the features that made her groom fall in love with her, and that she loves about herself.

And for the best bridal beauty, there are a few key things a bride should take into consideration:

1. A makeup & hair trial to go through wedding and wedding event looks. Waiting until the wedding day, will most certainly lead to delays, confusion, feeling overwhelmed by having to make beauty decisions at the last minute or disaster!
Having recently earned the Anokhi Excellence in Design 2015 award in Toronto, Canada, Mumbai-born designer Archana Kochhar continues to mesmerize the fashion circuit as she has done for more than a decade. A commerce and business management student, Archana followed her passion for fashion and creativity and has successfully launched her own brand under her name in both national and international arenas. Ranging from bridal wear to mens wear, her designs are adorned by many Bollywood divas like Katrina Kaif, Jaqueline Fernandes, and others all the way through socialite circles. She continues to enthrall her clients via her three pret stores located in Mumbai.

Even without any formal education in design, Archana’s innate sense of style and design aesthetic is evident in her signature creations that enthrall masses across the globe. The fact was established emphatically when she was honored by Galleries L’Fayette, Paris, where her collection was showcased alongside internationally acclaimed fashion brands such as Christian Lacroix, Ungaro, and Kenzo. She has even left a lasting imprint on big name fashion events including India Fashion Week, Lakme Fashion Week, and New York Fashion Week. She is also the brand ambassador of Smile Foundation, a nonprofit focused on education for girls and children in India.

Her creations are lusciously bright and eye catching, and though flamboyant, the clothing is still comfortable and cozy to wear. Inspired by 18th century Indian regalia, her creations often showcase a unique blend of embroideries with nouveau texture techniques across varied fabrics. Be it her structured sarees with distinct embroidered drapes or exquisite and exclusive contemporary bridal wear and silhouettes, Archana has revolutionized the perception of modern fashion aesthetics and style. Currently, she has aligned herself with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Make in India” campaign, and she unveiled her latest collection “Ahimsa Resama” during New York Fashion Week’s Spring Summer 2016 collection. The collection is designed with Ahimsa Silk aka Peace Silk and aims to spread the message globally. This silk is unique in being animal friendly as no silkworms are killed during its cultivation.

What are the Top 3 Allergies in Georgia and what can I do to prepare myself for Allergy Season?

The top 3 fall allergies in Georgia are Ragweed, Outdoor Molds, and Goldenrod. Ragweed grows abundantly throughout the South, North, and Midwest, and its lightweight pollen grains can travel up to 400 miles in the wind. Outdoor molds are another cause of fall allergies. They first appear in early spring, but thrive until the first frost. They are common in soil, compost piles, and in the leaves that cover the ground during the fall. Goldenrod blooms at the same time that ragweed does and does bring on many allergy symptoms: itchy eyes, joint pain, stuffiness, etc.

Some allergy precautions you can take are:

Use a face mask when you are outside, especially between 5 and 10 a.m. and on windy days.

Remove pollen from your skin and hair by showering frequently.

Keep your windows closed and turn on the air conditioner.

Eat a diet high in green vegetables.

Take an Antioxidant vitamin and 1,000 iu of Vitamin C daily.

Build up your immune system with a monthly Nutritional IV Infusion.

If you rake leaves in the fall, wear a face mask.

When you first turn on your car air conditioner, leave your windows open and avoid breathing the air for several minutes until mold spores can disperse.

Most importantly, get tested for allergies with a simple scratch test. If you have allergies, immunotherapy can be created to rid your allergies. Most insurance plans cover testing and creation of the immunotherapy. Call my office to learn more.

What is the best way to Detox?

I recommend the 2 day Arden’s Garden juice detox. It contains fresh grapefruit, orange, and lemon juices. I recommend to do this detox once monthly. They have a few locations in Georgia and also are sold in most Whole Foods stores.

Can Resistant starches be reheated to be able to digest as a fiber?

Yes, new studies suggest that resistant starches may be reheated after cooled for at least 30 minutes.

What are the biggest signs of a Gluten Intolerance?

The biggest signs of gluten intolerance are: joint pain, auto-immune conditions like Hashimoto, Hypothyroid, Lupus, and Rheumatoid Arthritis, gas/bloating, constipation, and eczema. Intolerances can be tested through blood and is offered in our office. Please call my office if you are interested in scheduling a blood test.

What are substitutes for Sodas and Coffee?

Some substitutes for sodas and coffee are: Le Croix sparkling water, green tea, other flavored herbal teas, matcha powder with coconut milk, fresh squeezed green juices.

Author by Dr. Shilpa P. Saxena

What exactly is integrative medicine? How do I know if it is the right approach for me?
The Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine defines it as “the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.”

Much of what is practiced in doctors’ offices today is based on disease diagnosis and treatment and symptom control. If you suffer from a long term symptom or chronic disease and desire an approach that looks into the cause(s), especially those rooted in nutrition, exercise, stress management and sleep, integrative medicine would be an appropriate avenue to take.

I hear a lot about maintaining “gut health” and the importance of probiotics. How can my digestive system be the key to good health?

In many Eastern modalities of healing, it has been well known that the gastrointestinal (GI) system is central to the health of the entire body. Beyond the basic biology functions we all know, like digestion, absorption and elimination, the GI system houses the majority of your immune system and is ‘the second brain’ with its close marriage to your brain and neurological systems. More and more, the latest in modern medical research reaffirms these timeless scientific truths by rediscovering the relationship between our beneficial bacteria (AKA the human microbiome) and our genes. One simple way to begin a total body health regimen is to take pure, potent and targeted probiotics (i.e. good bacteria) which can re-establish or maintain a balanced, healthy GI system.

What kinds of steps do I need to take to maintain a healthy gut?

The best way to promote a healthy gut is to feed it a variety of whole, unprocessed foods- mostly fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds and hormone/antibiotic-free protein sources. Couple that with adequate water intake and daily physical activity and you have the makings of a healthy gut foundation. Unfortunately, most Americans eat processed foods, drink sugary drinks, and don’t exercise regularly, and this severely threatens the health of your gut.

Beyond the basics, trained functional and integrative physicians can further re-establish a healthy GI system with a variety of therapies that range from elimination diets to glutamine supplementation. An individualized evaluation and treatment plan is essential to address patients with more significant disease.

I suffer from nasal allergies and dread taking medications. Is there anything I can do this spring to avoid medications, but get some relief?

Allergies can be a seasonal or year-round issue for many patients. In keeping with our timeless traditions, the neti pot is a very effective way to avoid taking antihistamines and other allergy medications. By rinsing the nasal cavity daily or twice daily with the right solution, you are able to rinse away mucous discharge, as well as remove the allergic trigger from the nasal lining. By removing both, you can stop the inflammatory (ie allergic) response from continuing to persist. Neti pot has been shown to be as effective as pharmaceutical medication in the treatment of allergies.

Quercetin and stinging nettles have also been shown to exert an anti-inflammatory function that can help reduce the symptoms of allergies any time of the year.

Two of my New Year’s resolutions included eating better and exercising regularly. I was doing great until last week. Now, I find myself making excuses … it’s too cold outside or I don’t want to make different meals for each family member. Any advice on how to stay on track?

They say that change is the only thing that doesn’t change in this world. Prochaska’s famous transtheoretical model of change teaches us there are discrete stages of change, and each one has a different motivational approach. If we want to improve, we must be aware of what stage we are in, and work to make it to the next level. Here are the stages with a hint to bump up to the next:

Pre-contemplation: Not even thinking about change here. Usually some external force (e.g. the death of a loved one or a big hospital bill) will cause a shift to the next stage.

Contemplation: Thinking about it, but you are stuck in the thought phase. Commit a 30 minute appointment with yourself to outline the first 1-3 steps it will take to start making the change.

Preparation: You are getting ready for the big day. Do the 1-3 things that got you out of the contemplation phase.

Action: You are doing it! Way to go! Create a support system and an environment for success to let it sustain as long as possible. This stage may be 1-3 months long.

Maintenance: The new habit doesn’t seem so new, and it seems more like who you are. It’s not so much effort to keep it going, but you do have moments of weakness or fleeting thoughts of ‘cheating.’ Remind yourself daily what you have gained from maintaining this new change so you don’t take it for granted and revert back.

Termination: The voices no longer try to convince you to go back. You are done with the stages of change! The best example- brushing your teeth. You hopefully brush your teeth every day, don’t need to be reminded, and can’t fathom going a day without doing it!

Positive change is rarely a straight line from what you are not today to exactly what you want to be tomorrow! It involves time, a process, plenty of forgiveness, and a constant self-awareness that keeps you aligned daily (even minute by minute, really) with what you want out of your best life!

South Asian women are known for their beautiful, thick, long hair. In fact, the best hair extensions boast on the packaging that the product is made from 100% Indian hair. Hair extensions are expensive, so South Asian women are lucky to have such luxurious hair for free!

Keep your locks long, healthy and luscious. Try my top hair products to keep your hair looking like a million bucks!

Matrix Total Results Sleek Shampoo
This shampoo is a great find because it not only moisturizes dry hair, but also helps to repair all types of hair. Smooth’s out frizz and is formulated with an all-day anti humidity protection secret weapon.

Matrix Total Results Moisturizing Conditioner
Helps your hair become soft and manageable, and creates a beautiful glossy sheen even after styling. This conditioner adds plenty of moisture to your hair and helps to revitalize limp, dry strands.

Vidal Sassoon V01 Hot Oil Treatment
This affordable treatment is a powerful conditioner. Be sure to rinse it out at least twice. I personally use the oil once every two weeks, and I have to rinse thoroughly so my hair doesn’t look greasy. When used properly, your hair will look luxurious.

Moroccan Oil
I love this product! One of the first hair oils available on the market, it is often copied, but never duplicated. Just like any conditioner, use it very sparingly. If you have thin or fine hair, Moroccon Oil makes a light treatment better suited for you. Use a small amount of product, warm it in your hands, and then use a brush to distribute the product evenly.

Baby Bliss Blow Dryer
Blow-drying can be a pain – literally! This blow dryer dries your hair in no time at all – it literally has the motor of a Ferrari car inside. Though expensive, the time you save pays for itself. One warning – make sure you don’t have anything else plugged into the socket. It is so powerful, the dryer might blow a fuse if the outlet is overloaded. I love this blow dryer and I would never use anything else!

Ceramic Round Brush
Use this brush to give your hair a smooth and luxurious finish when blow-drying. Create soft curls or add shade to straight hair. The ceramic barrel heats up faster and is also less damaging to your hair.

Mason Pearson Brush
The Mason Pearson hairbrush is the ultimate grooming tool. The boar hair bristles are gentle on the hair and scalp and brushing with this hair brush is the best way to distribute your natural hair oils while exfoliating the scalp. The cushions conform to the contours of the scalp, optimizing brushing with minimal effort.

GHD Flat Iron
GHD stands for good hair day and that is exactly what you get with this flat iron. The GHD has a microchip sensor in its iron that senses your hair texture. The temperature sets according to your hair type ensuring you never burn your hair with this flat iron. The plates are ceramic to give you a smooth finish every time. Though expensive, if anything goes wrong, the iron has a warranty. I have used my GHD for over five years and has never once given me trouble.

Hot Tools Curling Iron
I use the one inch for bridal curls, and the one and a half inch for Kim Kardashian locks. Be sure to hairs pray the hair sparingly before you put your hair on the iron to help the curls stay. Or use this iron as a wand instead by wrapping the hair around the barrel (instead of inside of the clip) to create beachy waves.

Sam Villa Heat Resistant Comb
This comb is a must-have especially when paired with the GHD flat iron. This comb will not melt or deform as it is made out of graphite, has silicon resistance, and has superpowers!

Kenra Hairspray
This is by far the best finishing spray that I have ever used. It sprays on light but has strong hold. This is not the old school aqua net, this is the real deal! Smells great and gives the hair a long lasting hold without giving you helmet hair.

Coconut Oil
A time-honored Indian tradition, coconut oil helps with shine and can combat dandruff. Compared to other natural oils, coconut oil is the only one that actually penetrates the hair, making hair look thicker. Read the label before purchasing to be sure it is pure coconut oil without any added ingredients. Warm the coconut oil in your hands or in the microwave to liquefy for easier use. Given the price, coconut oil is the best product you will find for the least amount of money.
