In Indian weddings, the Mehendi ceremony is more than just a pre-wedding ritual—it’s a vibrant celebration of love, tradition, and artistry. With henna-laced laughter, soulful music, and family coming together, the event radiates joy. But what truly steals the spotlight? The intricate swirls of Mehendi on the bride’s hands and feet, each line telling a story of beauty, blessings, and cultural pride.

The Cultural Heart of Henna

For centuries, henna—or Mehendi—has been a cherished part of wedding traditions across South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. It’s believed to bring good luck, protect against evil, and even strengthen the bond between the couple. In Indian weddings, the darker the henna stain, the deeper the love between the bride and groom—at least that’s what the grandmothers say!

Choosing the Perfect Mehendi Design

With so many styles to choose from, selecting the right Mehendi design can feel overwhelming. From traditional Indian motifs with paisleys, peacocks, and bridal figurines to bold Arabic florals and contemporary minimalist patterns, the options are endless.

The key is to find a design that complements your personality and wedding outfit while honouring cultural roots.

Top Tips:

Go bold with fusion: Combine Arabic elegance with Rajasthani detail.

Add personal touches: Initials, important dates, or meaningful symbols make it unique.

Think beyond hands: Consider arm, back, or even foot designs for added flair.

Setting the Scene: Planning Your Mehendi Night

The modern Mehendi night is a beautiful blend of tradition and trend. Think boho décor, pastel drapes, fairy lights, and floral lounges. Add upbeat dhol beats or a curated playlist, and you’ve got a celebration everyone remembers.

Pro Tips:

Book a professional Mehendi artist early, especially during the wedding season.

Use natural henna for safe, rich stains—avoid chemical cones.

Keep lemon-sugar syrup and eucalyptus oil handy for deeper colour.

Mehendi Services: More Than Just Application

Today, professional Mehendi services often include:

Bridal Mehendi packages with pre-bridal consultation

Guest designs for bridesmaids and family

Henna parties with mini-stations, cones, and take-home kits

Aftercare guidance for maintaining and enhancing colour

Some even offer customised bridal stories drawn through Mehendi art—a timeline of love, from first date to wedding vows.

Final Strokes

“Mehendi isn’t just about decoration. It’s a ritual of transformation—turning a bride-to-be into a vision of grace and heritage.” Whether you’re embracing centuries-old customs or adding a modern twist, let your Mehendi ceremony reflect your story, your style, and your celebration.

So, light up the venue, roll the music, and let the Mehendi magic begin!

Mehndi is an art of applying decorative designs on hands, feet, and arms. It is an integral part of Indian traditional weddings so much that the ritual has a dedicated day to its name that is celebrated in its full entirety. Festive music, vibrant dance, lavish decor, and mouth-watering delicacies with great pomp have everyone thoroughly enjoying this beautification ritual. Ladies are usually adorned with mehndi (also known as henna) on many festivities and occasions such as Karva Chauth. The dark amber color of mehndi holds a special significance in both Indian and Muslim traditions and is considered auspicious when the color darkens or retains its hue for a longer time.

History and Background

Mehndi is famed for its medicinal properties and use in body art around the world. The word originates from the Sanskrit word mendhika referring to the plant from which it is derived. References suggest that mehndi had its presence in varied cultures apart from India such as Egypt, Asia Minor, Middle East, and was even used by Cleopatra, pharaohs, and Prophet Muhammad. However, the body of art of mehndi had its roots in ancient India from where it spread to different nooks and corners of the world. Discovery of the henna plant’s cooling properties led to the popularity of use on the skin. The plant has even been used to color wool, silk, animal skin, human hair, and more.

Lawsonia inermis, the botanical name of the mehndi plant, is generally found in tropical climates on the Indian subcontinent. Fresh henna leaves, as opposed to powdered henna, have no odor. The leaves of the plant are used to produce a paste that leaves a dark reddish-orange color after application.

The dried leaves of henna are crushed to produce a powder that is then mixed with water, eucalyptus oil, and lemon juice to create a smooth pastelike texture. The paste is left to rest overnight and then poured into a plastic cone for application.

Application and Design

The tip of the cones are cut according to the desired thickness of the line. Cones are then squeezed lightly to apply uninterrupted designs, all ranging from simple to ornate depending on the individual’s taste or the occasion.

When having mehndi applied, it is best to wear short sleeves to keep the hands and arms exposed. From stunning, intricate designs to checkered and geometric patterns, the design options are endless. For minimalists, Arabic designs are elegant. Having mantras etched is the latest fad. Wedding motifs such as elephants and palanquin are the all-time traditional favorites. The feet are not to be forgotten – mehndi done in a prominent motif in the center is quite popular.

Once applied, the mehndi is left to dry for color blending and uniformity. To enhance the color outcome, a mixture of lemon juice and sugar is applied to the Mehndi. Once dry, the mendhi naturally crumbles and falls off. Using water to remove the mehndi is not common practice as this can make the color lighter.

Mehndi as a Ritual

In South Asian weddings, the mehndi event is a ritual where henna is applied on the bride’s hands and feet in anticipation of the wedding ceremony. Not only limited to the bride, all the bridesmaids and guests have beautiful designs done on their hands and arms from hired professionals. The ritual involves the ceremonial singing of traditional songs to the beat of drums and dholaks. Mehndi designs for the bride are elaborate, intricate, and as part of the tradition, it often includes the name of husband-to-be for him to seek on the wedding night.

For some, weddings are a time for doubt and stress. Anxiety and nervousness might be overwhelming, but given mehndi is scientifically proven to be a cooling property, the art of applying henna is a way to calm the bride’s nerves.

Here are some tips to help you choose a bridal mehndi artist for your wedding.

Past Experience

Bridal mehndi requires more time and precision, so it is best to be sure the artist has previous experience in working with brides. If you have a particular style of mehndi in mind, such as Rajasthani or Arabic design, be sure your selected artist has experience working in the style or with the design you want.

View the Portfolio

Word of mouth references are a great start, but it is also important to have a look for yourself when it comes to bridal mehndi. Before hiring an artist, take a look at their portfolio. Going through their past work will give you an understanding of their style, finesse, and quality of work.

Ask for References

One of the best ways to determine if your chosen mehndi artist will be right for you is to ask for references. Whether it is by reading online reviews, talking with family and friends, or reaching out to past clients, references can answer questions and confirm the artist’s style and quality.

Check Availability

As with all wedding vendors, it is especially important to check availability particularly during peak wedding season. Start with checking dates in advance to lock in your chosen mehndi artist.

Know What You Want

If you are not clear as to the type of design and detail you want, then you might be left disappointed or unimpressed. Do some resea rch to find determine the types of designs your like as well as how detailed you want your mehndi. Instagram and Pinterest are great places to take a look at a wide variety of different bridal designs and shortlisting the ones you like. Having a clear idea in mind will help your mehndi artist understand your expectations.

Request a Trial

Much like with other wedding vendors, such as your makeup artist or hairstylist, it is best to seek a pre-wedding trial from your mehndi artist as well. This will help you gauge their speed and quality as well as be a good opportunity to do a patch test for the ingredients used in their henna paste.

Congratulations to the winner of the 2014 Fort Lauderdale MyShadi Bridal Expo Mehndi Competition, Farah Mansuri! Learn more about Farah, her winning design, and the services her company offers.

For those who are not familiar with you or your work, can you share a bit on the formation of your business?
I have been the owner of Farah’s Mehndi for over 12 years now. The formation of my business really began with friends and family. I am truly appreciative of their support and for giving me the extra push in life I needed to turn my mehndi passion into my own business. Not many people can say they love their work as I can.

How does it feel to be the winner of the MyShadi Bridal Expo Mehndi Competition?
To be honest, I was a bit nervous about being in the competition, but I knew it was an amazing opportunity to be apart of a live mehndi competition. This competition gave me the creative platform to showcase the authenticity of my skills and work. Of course, I felt a bit of pressure of course with all the amazing attendees passing by my booth to watch as I applied my winning design! All in all I feel humbled to be this year’s South Florida winner.

Your passion for this art form is evident. What inspired you to become a professional Mehndi artist?
Mehndi has given me artistic freedom with the endless creative possibilities. Many things have inspired my designs – various styles of jewelry, clothing, nature, fashion, fine art, and other henna pieces. I have been applying mehndi for 12 years, changing my passion of mehndi from a hobby artist to a professional artist. Over the years, I have developed more skills and the word spread about my work. My once hobby, now profession has given me the opportunity to travel to different parts of the United Sates, Caribbean islands, South and Central America to meet thousands of amazing brides and showcase my talent on their hands and feet for their once in a lifetime moment.

What inspired your winning Mehndi design?
I first sketched this design out for my own wedding. This design came from a collaboration of designs I have done in the past. I love the fusion mehndi style of intricate work along with the boldness of floral design. And these types of designs photograph beautifully. I also embellished the designs with jewels to accent what the model was wearing, which can be done for all brides during their sangeet or mehndi evening.

What other wedding related services you offer?
Other wedding-related serves I provide include selling bridal and contemporary jewelry, bridal dressing, and sari dressing for formal events.

What is the biggest lesson you learned your first year in business? What was the biggest lesson you learned in this past year of business?
This is not so much a lesson from my business, but a great lesson learned from my parents. Always be humble in your work and treat everyone as they are family. This is something I follow in my daily life. And, I live by the mantra – “no budget is too little or too large.”

What has been your favorite wedding or moment that stands out to you and why?
There have been many great moments with my brides and their families. One that really stands out is when I received a request to do a destination wedding in Costa Rica. Though I had been a mehndi artist at destination weddings in the past, this time was a bit different. The design chosen by the bride was quite elaborate, and it began at her shoulders moving down to her fingers with her feet done from the knees down. I was astonished to meet someone with the same love and passion for mehndi as me! With such an elaborate design, we naturally spent many hours chatting as I applied her mehndi. We really got along well, and it turned into a great friendship!

The economic climate affected the U.S. wedding industry in a profound way over the past years, including the normally untouchable high-end segment of the market. To what extent did it affect your business?
The economy has affected aspects of life for many, and it has made one more conscious of how they would like to spend their earning. In the elaborate Indian wedding industry, many would say the budgets just become grander consisting of pyrotechnics, grand entrances on elephants/camels/horses, and performances from Bollywood music stars. Invited guests can number in the thousands. Indian weddings seem to be more over the top than American weddings; I can safely say the economy has not burdened my ability to express my art.

In what regions (city, entire state, all over the US), do you provide your services?

I can travel to most locations. Over the years, I have traveled different areas in the US as well many of the Caribbean islands and countries in Central and South America.

What advice do you have for brides planning their wedding?
One very important factor is that brides like the work and personality of the artist applying their mehndi. Remember to also book your mehndi artist 4 to 12months prior to the wedding. Be sure to have your manicure and pedicure done before the application of your mehndi. Any kind of skin exfoliation soon after mehndi application will tarnish the color and your mehndi will remain light. It is best to schedule your bridal mehndi 48 hours before your wedding ceremony to give it time to darken fully. You should only use natural mehndi, so take care as some mehndi pastes now are made with added chemicals. Discuss this with your artist prior to your application. Usually, professional artists have no problems informing you about the ingredients of the paste used for your mehndi. No one in this industry does it for the money; they do it because they are passionate! Find Farah’s Mehndi on Facebook or call 786-208-2277 for more information.

Indian marriages are known for their many rituals. In fact, the beauty of Indian weddings comes forth in the numerous traditions that are associated with a special celebration. Indian weddings are incomplete without dance, music and lots of laughter. Furthermore, Indian weddings are not a one-day ceremony. Pre-wedding ceremonies begin before the wedding and can sometimes be a week-long celebration.

Among the many traditions that are infused into Indian weddings, one of the most prominent is the bridal mehndi ceremony. This is the day when mehndi is applied on the hands and feet of the bride and even the groom. While the bride has a very elaborate pattern done on her hands and feet, the groom usually has just a token design. Mehndi is a very important part of both Hindu and Muslim weddings in India. In fact, applying mehndi designs is a custom during any celebration in India, be it Karva Chauth, Teej, Diwali, Ramadan or any other festival.

Beliefs associated with mehndi

It is a common belief that the darker the color the mehndi leaves on the hands on a bride, the more will she be loved by her husband and mother-in-law. However, the significance of applying Indian mehndi designs during weddings is not restricted just to sentiments and beliefs. Although these beliefs make the application of mehndi a much anticipated and charming tradition, the actual reason is of much deeper significance, which is sometimes forgotten in the present day.

The core significance of Applying Mehndi

Besides lending color to the hands, mehndi is a very powerful medicinal herb. Weddings are stressful, and often, stress causes headaches and fevers. As the wedding day approaches, the excitement mixed with nervous anticipation can take its toll on the bride and groom. Application of mehndi can prevent too much stress because it cools the body and keeps the nerves from becoming tense. This is the reason why mehndi is applied on the hands and feet of the bride, which house nerve endings in the body. Also, being a highly antiseptic agent, mehndi can protect the couple from viral diseases. Such diseases are totally undesirable just before the wedding and this medicinal herb can lend a strong shield. Any small cuts, burns or scratches that the couple might sustain during the course of so many rituals and customs can be healed easily with the application of mehndi. It improves blood circulation in the body and enhances general health. The initial practice of applying mehndi in ancient times began in order to protect the couple and keep them healthy.

Mehndi applied during Indian weddings is not just a plain paste of mehndi powder and water. Eucalyptus oil, a bit of clove oil and a few drops of lemon are added. These oils not only help in darkening the color of mehndi on the body but also enhance the benefits of mehndi and make the paste highly medicinal. The best part is that the smell, the beautiful rich color and the health benefits that mehndi lends act as a powerful aphrodisiac. Also, since the color and smell remain for days, it boosts the romance in the initial days of the wedding.

Islamic belief is also very strong regarding mehndi and its application during weddings is a very significant part of Islamic weddings as well. According to holy Islamic scriptures, the Prophet always administered mehndi application and as a drink to people suffering from diseases. So, it corresponds to the Hindu ideology of using mehndi before weddings. Mehndikirasmis held a couple of days before the nikah ceremony and is celebrated with a lot of pomp and honor.

Mehndi Traditions

Over the centuries, mehndi has become so ingrained in Indian tradition that today the mehndi ceremony is one of the major celebrations before the wedding. A family member, mehndi artist or expert applies mehndi on the palms and feet of the bride. Elaborate designs are applied on the hands with a cone filled with mehndi. While the mehndi is being applied, other members of the family play the traditional dhol and dance to its beats. Every female member of the family gets mehndi done on her hands and feet. The entire mood of a mehndi ceremony is extremely festive.
The mehndi ceremony takes place at the bride’s place and usually, it is held a couple of days prior to the wedding. It is a night ceremony which is accompanied by relatives, music, laughter, food and a lot of fun.

The mehndi ceremony for the groom takes place separately at his home. The bride and groom do not usually get decked up very elaborately at the time of the mehndi application, and their ensembles are very simple. Once the mehndi for the bride is done, the female relatives of the bride, especially her sisters, visit the groom’s ceremony. It is great fun as the would-be sister-in-law’s play pranks on their future brother-in-law and try to get some money from him as a tradition! It is a very happy occasion for both families. Traditional songs and music characterize the ceremony from the beginning to the end.

Present trends in mehndi

Although times have changed and a lot of new inclusions have been made in Indian weddings, the significance of the mehndi ceremony has grown in stature. Many families bring in DJs to play songs and celebrations that go on until late in the night. If something has changed about the ceremony, it is the designs and patterns. While only intricate Indian designs were traditionally applied in the past, brides today are experimenting with Arabic designs and Indo-Arabic designs and mixing shimmer pastes along with the traditional mehndi paste. Semi-precious stones are also embedded in the design. It is traditional to write the name of the groom on the bride’s palm. In some regions, this is also a small ritual after the wedding. The groom is made to search for his name, which is usually smartly written so as not be readily visible.

The mehndi ceremony is a reflection of the rich Indian culture, bringing together the knowledge of medicinal herbs with many lovely sentiments and beliefs. The result is a ceremony filled with fun and joy and the perfect precursor to the auspicious wedding day.

Recently, Desh-Videsh sat down with the winner of the 2012 Fort Lauderdale MyShadi Bridal Expo Mehndi Competition, Amber Emkin. Owner of HennaParty.com, Amber has been a mehndi artist for over eight years. Her background in fine arts lends itself nicely to her creative and elaborate designs. Learn more about Amber and what inspires her creative side.

Desh-Videsh: What inspired your winning design?
Amber: There were several factors that went into the creation of the design. The competition was very specific that the designs were to be “bridal.” That of course can have many meanings as some brides prefer very simple, bold and modern designs and some brides prefer traditional, intricate and detailed designs. As an artist, I have a particular preference when it comes to Bridal mehndi, so that was the specific guiding influence for the competition. This is not always the case when I am working with actual brides, their unique preferences and style become guiding influences when I create their mehndi.

For the competition, I wanted the design to have both classic and modern elements, but to be unmistakably Bridal. The design I created is classic in its coverage and style, the lines are fine and intricate and the design covers the entire forearm. I gave it a modern look through the use of colors, glitter and crystals. By incorporating a “bride” into the design, there is no mistaking that it is Bridal mehndi! The particular colors were chosen to complement the skin tone, dress and jewelry of my model. I do this for all of my brides so the mehndi is coordinated with the bridal look and colors she has chosen. Of course, the colors and crystals can be changed to coordinate with different looks throughout the wedding.

DV: Your passion for this art form is evident. What inspired you to become a Professional Henna Artist?

Amber: I see it (henna) as a true artistic medium with vast creative possibilities. I have an education and background in art and design so seeing the possibilities and potential for beautiful henna designs comes naturally for me. My henna designs are inspired by textiles, jewelry, shapes, stories, rituals, colors, nature, people, patterns, flowers, fashion, fine art, culture, other henna works, etc. I have been a henna artist for eight years now and making the move from hobbyist to professional happened as I developed my skill and word spread about my work. These days, I am invited to do a variety of work in TV, movies, fashion, corporate launches, weddings and cultural events. I enjoy working with people and being of service, so contributing my artistry to joyous milestones like weddings is especially fulfilling for me.

DV: How does it feel to be the winner for the 2012 Fort Lauderdale MyShadi Bridal Expo Mehndi Competition?
Amber: I was nervous about it, but I also felt that it was a wonderful idea. I have had situations in the past where others would take pictures of my work and pass it off as their own. When you have a live competition with everyone watching, there can be no mistake about who created the work. That really appealed to me and I was excited to participate.

I knew the folks at Desh-Videsh would do their part to ensure that the judging was fair and unbiased, so I just focused on giving my best. I am honored that my work received such recognition and I deeply appreciate the opportunity.

DV: Now that you have this award, what’s next?
Amber: I have a vision of where I would like to see this art form go, not just for me, but for my team (of henna artists) at HennaParty.com and for all professional henna artists. That vision includes a high degree of quality in professionalism, artistry, products and service. That is my focus. I am working on some exciting projects and products for this year so stay tuned. There might even be more awards along the way as well!

DV: Do you have any suggestions for brides who are planning their wedding mehndi?
Absolutely! Here are some basic guidelines that I like to share with all my brides:
You should like both the work and the personality of the artist you hire for your wedding mehndi. Weddings can be chaotic and many brides have told me how much they appreciate having a calming personality around them during their weddings. Mehndi should be a relaxing and beautiful experience.

Ensure that quality products will be used and do a consultation well before your wedding to see what kind of color you will get from the henna. Professional artists offer bridal consultations that include a sample henna application just for this purpose.

Reserve your henna artist well in advance. If you have decided on the artist you want for your mehndi, reserve them right away. Between 6-12 months before your wedding is a good general guideline to ensure you get your dates with the artist you have chosen.

Have your manicure and pedicure done before the mehndi. Also ensure that your skin is clean and bare (no oils, lotions, perfumes, etc) for the Mehndi.

Plan to have your mehndi done two full days (48 hours) before your wedding to give it time to darken fully. Natural henna needs this much time to darken and you should require that only premium natural henna is used.
