Triumph of Light

By Daksh Parikh

Nine nights unfold in joyous hues,
Navaratri begins with sacred muse.
The air is alive with Raas and Garba beats,
Devotees circle, where faith and fervor meet.

In rhythmic steps, we honor the Divine,
Durga Maa’s strength in every line.
Dressed in colors bright and bold,
We dance the stories that ancestors told

With every swirl, with every spin,
We celebrate the power within.
The Goddess rides on lion’s grace,
Vanquishing darkness, lighting space.

But as the ninth night draws its close,
Another tale of triumph grows.
Dussehra dawns, the sky alight,
Rama stands, prepared to fight.

The demon Ravana falls that day,
Evil bows, swept away.
Good prevails, as arrows fly,
A promise kept beneath the sky.

In Garba’s joy and Rama’s might,
We celebrate the victory of light.
Navaratri and Dussehra remind us still,
That good will conquer, it always will.

About the Poet

Daksh Parikh, a 12-year-old prodigious talent hailing from Orlando, Florida, is not your ordinary tween. While many kids his age are engrossed in video games or outdoor sports, Aryan finds solace and expression through the art of poetry. He began penning verses at the tender age of 8 and, since then, has cultivated a passion that goes beyond his years.

In the heart of the night, a spark is born,
A flame that dances, bright as the dawn.
Diwali comes with a radiant glow,
A festival of lights where shadows bow.

From ancient times, the story is told,
Of Ram’s return, of courage bold.
The triumph of good, the fall of the night,
Evil succumbs to truth’s pure light.

Lamps of hope in every hand,
Flicker and shine across the land.
A path of peace, a prayer of grace,
The light of love on every face.

Bursting skies with colors fly,
As joy and laughter reach the sky.
Homes adorned with candles bright,
Banishing the dark, inviting light.

O festival grand, O night divine,
You remind us all that we must shine.
For in each heart a lamp can burn,
Guiding the way, as we return.

To kindness, truth, and love’s embrace,
To unity, transcending race.
On Diwali’s night, we all are one,
In the victory of light, the day is won.

Evil falls, and good prevails,
As light upon the earth regales.
May every Diwali fill the air,
With peace, prosperity, and love to share

About the Poet

Born in the bustling city of Miami in 2013, Aditi Rao is a radiant 10-year-old with a passion that belies her young age. While most kids her age are engrossed in games and cartoons, Ananya is often found nestled in a corner, pen and notebook in hand, crafting poems that reflect her observations, dreams, and emotions.

Seasons Slow and Tame

By Tanvi Bhide

In nature’s grand ballet, where colors dance and play,
The seasons tell their stories, in a gentle, endless sway.
From spring’s colorful blossoms to winter’s quiet sleep,
A cycle of renewal, where life and time upkeep.

Spring bursts with life, in shades bright and true,
Summer’s golden sunlight, a warm and endless hue.
Autumn’s leaves fall, in a cascade of red and gold,
Winter’s breath is silent, a stillness draped in cold.

In Florida though, the seasons gently blend,
A timeless, warm continuum, where summer doesn’t end.
The spring is just a whisper, the autumn barely calls,
Winter’s fleeting presence, behind summer’s sunny walls.

Palm trees sway in rhythm, beneath a constant sun,
A land of endless beaches, where seasons meld as one.
The days are bright and balmy, a tropical refrain,
In Florida’s gentle seasons, change is slow and tame.

She wrote this poem because she finds it fascinating how the concept of seasons in Florida differs from other places. Unlike the visual transitions seen elsewhere, Florida experiences seasonal changes more as an assertion, with little to no visual verification. Through this poem, she aimed to capture that irony while still celebrating Florida’s beauty. Aside from writing poetry, I competitively dance in various styles, ranging from classical Indian dance to more Western styles, in her free time.

No sign of her

she is tired and sleepy
Staying up late
In the dark, it’s creepy

looking at a girl
she looks lost in its view
She wrote this poem because she feels that it relates to real life very well. This poem shows that we should take some time to slow down and truly focus on what’s important. Outside of school, she competitively dances in many styles varying from Indian to Western dancing. She likes acting and singing and has performed in many plays.

On January 30, 2024, we remember and pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary. Mahatma Gandhi, also known as the “Father of the Nation” in India, was a prominent leader in the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule. He was known for his principles of non-violence (Ahimsa) and civil disobedience, which he used as powerful tools to advocate for freedom, justice, and equality.

Gandhi’s life and teachings continue to inspire people worldwide. His commitment to truth, peace, and social justice left an indelible mark on the world. On this day, it is essential to reflect on his legacy and the values he stood for, such as non-violence, tolerance, and unity.

In commemorating Gandhi’s death anniversary, we can honor his memory by promoting peace, harmony, and social justice in our own lives and communities. His message of non-violence and his relentless pursuit of a more just and equitable world continue to be relevant and serve as a guiding light for humanity.

Mahatma’s soul, forever spread By Arjun Desai

Spin of charkha, soul unstilled,
Bending giants, iron-willed.
Sandals tread, salt burns bright,
Truth his weapon, shining light.

From ashram wall to nation’s cry,
“Satyagraha,” Love’s reply.
Freedom woven, thread by thread,
Mahatma’s soul, forever spread.

Mahatma Gandhi, we adore
By Nirali Shah

In India’s land of vibrant hues,
A soul arose, in quiet muse.
With wisdom deep and heart so pure,
Mahatma Gandhi, we adore.

He walked a path of truth and peace,
In struggle, suffering would cease.
With nonviolence, he fought the fight,
Guiding India toward the light.

Satyagraha, his weapon strong,
Injustice couldn’t stand for long.
The Father of the Nation’s grace,
Inspires us all in every place.

His legacy, forever strong,
Teaches us right from wrong.
In Gandhi’s name, let’s strive to be,
The change we wish in history.

About Poets

With ink in their veins and fire in their souls, Nirali and Arjun Shah, Indian teens aged 14 and 12, weave magic with words, especially when it comes to the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. Nirali’s verses paint Gandhi’s unwavering courage with strokes of saffron and emerald, each line a silent protest against tyranny. Arjun crafts intricate poems; his words are like polished pebbles, deep and contemplative. He delves into the Mahatma’s quiet strength, the echoes of his wisdom reverberating through lines that shimmer like moonlight on the Yamuna. In their poems, Gandhi is not just a historical figure but a living ember, his ideals a torch they carry with unwavering determination. They dream of a world painted with the colors of his non-violent revolution, a world where their words become bricks paving the path to a just and equitable future.

By Manya Harsha

In the world of dreams and wishes so bright,
A brand new year arrives, oh what a sight!
I’m just a kid of ten, but I can see,
The magic of the future, it’s for you and me.

Fireworks light up the midnight sky,
As the old year says a sweet goodbye.
I stay up late, with eyes so wide,
To welcome the new year with arms open wide.

With resolutions, I’ll fill my list,
To be a better friend, not to be missed.
To learn and grow, to laugh and play,
In the coming year, come what may.

I’ll chase my dreams with all my might,
And never give up, even in the darkest night.
For in this new year, I’ll surely find,
A world of adventure of every kind.

I’ll make new friends and keep the old,
In my heart, they’ll never grow cold.
With each passing day, I’ll spread some cheer,
In this brand new, bright and shiny year.

So here’s to the future, the unknown ahead,
With hope in our hearts, we’ll forge ahead.
Happy New Year to you, my dear friend,
May this year’s adventures never end!

By Aditi Rao

Diwali, the festival of light,
A time of joy and delight.
With candles and diyas aglow,
We banish the darkness and make our hearts glow. From the bustling streets to the quiet homes,
Diwali’s magic everywhere roams.
The air is filled with the sweet smell of sweets,
And the sound of laughter echoes through the streets. We gather with loved ones near and far,
To celebrate this auspicious affair.
We exchange gifts, share stories, and feast,
On delicious food that’s simply the best.Diwali is a time to reflect and renew,
To let go of the old and embrace the new.
To light the lamp of hope within our hearts,
And start anew, fresh from the start.

So let us celebrate Diwali with cheer,
And spread the light of love far and near.
May this festival bring us all happiness and peace,
And may our lives forever be blessed.

Happy Diwali!

Diwali, a sight to be seen

By Daksh Parikh

In the heart of India’s lore, under moon’s soft silver sheen,
Comes a festival of lights, Diwali, a sight to be seen.
A tapestry of twinkling stars, spread across the earthly plane,
A symphony of lamps and candles, singing in joyous refrain.

Fires of hope and new beginnings, chasing away the dark,
A victory of good over evil, igniting a collective spark.
Homes adorned in colorful rangolis, patterns intricate and bright,
Doorways lined with marigolds, basking in golden light.

The sound of laughter fills the air, as families unite,
Sharing stories, sweets, and love, a heartwarming sight.
Fireworks explode in the sky, painting it with hues,
Of crimson, azure, emerald, and myriad other clues.

Ganesha and Lakshmi are worshiped, blessings to bestow,
For prosperity, wisdom, and wealth, in life’s ebb and flow.
Golden diyas float on rivers, carrying whispered prayers,
To the heavens above, in hope someone there hears.

The taste of sweet ladoos, and savory samosas near,
Delighting the palate, spreading festive cheer.
Gifts exchanged, hands clasped tight,
Grateful hearts, shining bright.

Diwali, a beacon in the endless night,
Reminding us all of love’s infinite might.
So, light a lamp, let its glow softly spill,
And let Diwali’s magic, your spirit fulfill.

Some of you may know that Aruna and I visited India early this year. I have written in my editorial column about celebrating Jan 26 – India republic day at Gujarat VidyaPeeth, institute founded by Mahatma Gandhi, visited Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad on Jan 30th, Gandhi ji death anniversary, hosted fashion show at one of the local colleges with the theme of Indian traditional outfits.

In this article let me talk about one more very interesting thing we did while we were in India. Desh-Videsh Media Group hosted a Poetry Contest at one of the high schools. The subject was Prime Minister Modi.

The rules of this contest were as follows,

The format of the poetry must be a quatrain, which consists of four lines in each stanza. The rhyme scheme of this poem will be AABB, meaning that the first and second lines of each stanza rhyme with each other, as do the third and fourth lines.

Only submit ONE poem, ONE time. Submitting multiple poems will cause disqualification. Only one poem per student will be accepted.

Poem must adhere to basic rules of capitalization.

Do not type poem in all capital letters.

Do not capitalize the first letter of every word.

Only capitalize words that are proper (i.e. names and places).

The first word of each line may be capitalized.

Do not use “texting” lingo. Properly spell out all words.

Poems containing language that is vulgar, offensive, or wholly inappropriate will not be accepted.

Instead of Announcing First, second and third winners, we decided to announce the top 15 winners and each will get Rs 1000 as a prize.

A Man of Humble Beginnings

In the land of India, there rose a leader bold
A man of humble beginnings, yet with a heart of gold
His name was Narendra Modi, a man of great renown
And make corruption pay its toll.

No more shall bribe or greed hold sway,
For Modi leads the righteous way,
With laws that bind and justice fair,
He builds a future free from despair.

The people trust his every move,
For he has shown he will improve
A leader strong, with heart and mind,
He fights for truth, for all mankind.

So let us raise our voice in praise,
For Modi’s bold and fearless ways.
A beacon bright, a shining star,
He leads us on to worlds afar.

Providing Equal Rites To Every Religion

In the land of many religions,
Where diverse beliefs abound,
There was a leader named Modi,
With equality in his sound.

He sought to bring together,
All faiths under one roof,
To end religious divides,
And provide equal proof.

No longer would one be favored,
Over the other in sight,
For Modi knew that unity,
Could only come from what’s right.

With open arms he welcomed
Each religion with respect,
And pledged to treat them equally,
Without any neglect.

For he believed that differences,
Should not create strife,
But instead be celebrated,
And enhance every life.

And so he worked tirelessly,
To build a nation of trust,
Where every religion could flourish,
Without any bias or lust.

For Modi knew that in diversity,
Lies the beauty of a nation,
And providing equal rights to all,
Was his greatest aspiration.

The Tirukkuṟaḷ also called the Kural, is a classic Tamil language text consisting of 1,330 short couplets of seven words each. The text is divided into three books with teachings on virtue, wealth and love. Considered one of the greatest works on ethics and morality, it is known for its universality and secular nature. Originally written by Valluvar, also known as Thiruvalluvar around 300 BCE in Tamil language.

The text came to print for the first time in 1812, it has been translated into at least 41 Indian and non-Indian languages, making it one of the most translated non-religious works. As of 2014, the English language alone had about 57 versions available, which is estimated to have crossed 100 by 2020. The Kural has been widely admired by scholars like Ilango Adigal, Kambar, Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Schweitzer, Constantius Joseph Beschi, Karl Graul, George Uglow Pope, Alexander Piatigorsky, and Yu Hsi which has made The Kural very popular in the ethical, social, political, economical, religious, philosophical, and spiritual spheres.

We are very thankful to Kanan, a farmer, founder of Seer7 Timeless Solutions, a doting father, a self-professed Tamil poet, bilingual blogger, translator who has given us a permission to reprint his poetic translation of The Tirukkuṟaḷ. The following love poems comes from the third book of The Tirukkuṟaḷ called Love.

We published nine poems in the September 2021 wedding issue of Desh-Videsh. It is my pleasure to present to you another twelve poems. I hope you like them.
