Rosanna Barsati and Christopher Fontana, both attorneys, met at a local restaurant in South Florida. A belly dancer by night, Rosanna was performing at Cedars restaurant where Christopher was helping a friend in the kitchen. Christopher asked his friend about Rosanna, the two went on a date, and the rest was history!

After dating for about five months, the couple planned a trip to Sicily, Italy, with Christopher’s parents. Rosanna and Christopher drove to the top of Mount Etna, the world’s most active volcano. While taking in the awe-inspiring scenery, Chris nonchalantly asked Rosanna to marry him. It took a few moments and the drive back down the mountain for it to sink in, but Rosanna knew she was an engaged woman!

Wedding festivities began with a mehndi celebration at Rosanna’s mother’s home. Rosanna’s mom and family decorated the home while tassa drum and hit music created a festive atmosphere.

Given the couple is from the Orlando area, they chose the Henry P. Leu Gardens to be their wedding venue. Rosanna’s favorite flower is the rose, so it was only fitting they married in the venue’s Rose Garden! Decor was kept simple as the garden was so picturesque with handmade touches to the arch by Rosanna’s mother and friends. Rosanna’s father was the officiant for the wedding ceremony adding a meaningful and personal touch to the occasion.

The dinner and reception were held at the place where it all began – Cedars Restaurant! Rosanna’s mom and friends created beautiful centerpieces of pink and white roses. The bride and groom danced to the classic Frank Sinatra song “Fly Me to the Moon.” Guests celebrated into the night to a medley of Arabic, top 40s Reggaeton, and Indian Chutney music.

Rosanna and Christopher assure couples planning a wedding quickly that it can be done, so don’t stress when planning the wedding of your dreams!

Year in Review

The wedding industry’s top vendors are part of the show giving attendees a chance to meet with vendors who specialize in South Asian weddings. From event planners to photographers and banquet halls to decorator’s, the MyShadi Bridal Expo offers brides and grooms access to nearly every vendor needed to plan a wedding. Beautifully designed mandaps with gorgeous floral arrangements and intricate reception table settings are just some of the wedding components attendees get to see in person. MyShadi Bridal Expo is the place to be to feel inspired and come up with a unique wedding vision. When it comes to bridal and formal wear fashion, the exclusive designer fashion shows provide a stunning look at the latest styles. Whether a wedding guest or the bride, the designer clothing and jewelry boutiques attending the show allow attendees to purchase items on site. Many couples are now planning destination weddings, and the MyShadi Bridal Expo makes it even easier to do. Some of the best love stories are the tales of childhood sweethearts, like Anita and Chirag Patel. Friends since the 8th grade, the two saw each other grow up and were finally engaged after 10 years. Chirag planned his proposal for six months, between picking the perfect spot at the park and choosing a beautiful ring. Anita was nervous and didn’t know what Chirag was trying to ask, but was so excited to begin planning the wedding and share the rest of her life with him after she said “yes.”

For the Garba night, they chose a Moroccan theme with bright jewel toned tablecloths, cushions, and curtains. Their guests were entertained by several game stations, including corn hold, cards and Carom boards, and had the option of sitting at tables or standing at high boys.

The ceremony followed a more traditional theme, with a gold, red, and green indoor mandap and a large Ganesha table at the ballroom entrance. The aisle had rose petal adorned design, with columns along the side, large floral pieces and chandeliers. For the reception, the mandap was opened and the drapes and flowers were changed to match the new gold and blue color scheme. Lighting was installed along the perimeter of the room, and the couple included several unique touches, such as a large engagement photo near the entrance, a bird cage in the reception hall and puzzle pieces on the sign-in table instead of a traditional book. Food was set up in the foyer for their 600 guests, and the DJ booth was lit up as the dancing and entertainment began. Anita and Chirag’s families did a surprise dance and video depicting the couple’s decade-long relationship, and it was the highlight of the night. Anita as relieved that the entire event went off without a hitch, and even though it was just one day in the scope of her long and happy life with Chirag, it was the most important day they have ever shared.

Most experts agree that style is the most important consideration when narrowing your list of top photographers. With Facebook and Instagram feeds full of images from friends’ and families’ engagement photo shoots and weddings, chances are you are already drawn to a certain look and feel. Peter Nguyen of Peter Nguyen Photography believes, “style is the most important factor couples should consider … I highly recommend couples take time to look through the photographer’s recent works. Create a private Pinterest board for wedding photo samples and inspirations, and share it with your photographer.”

From the style of photography to the nitty-gritty details of budgets, proofs, and prints, choosing a photographer can seem like a daunting task. No one wants to look through their wedding album years from now and be disappointed with the images. Though you may “ooh” and “aah” over artistic images and creative, out-of-this-world poses, there are many factors to consider (both practical and your own wants and needs) as well as questions to ask potential photographers.

Factors to Consider

Moments from your wedding events will be cherished not only today and tomorrow, but also for many years to come so the task of choosing a photographer may feel like a weighty decision. Personality, budget, experience, and photography styles rank among the most important factors to consider when choosing a wedding photographer. Niulka and Luis LaBoy of NSPG Media believe that “ultimately, it all depends on the couple’s wants, needs and desires coupled with a budget. Also consider their quality of work, personality, and experience. No matter how much you love someone’s work make sure your personalities click and that they have experience in the type of wedding you’ll be having.”

Personality

Most photographers agree, it comes down to personality, personality, personality! Stephana Ferrell of Sona Photography stresses, “You have a vision for your day, and you’ll need someone behind the lens that can capture it for you the way you want it. Just as there are painters with different techniques to paint the same media/subject, your photographer and cinematographer will have a unique way of “seeing” your event. Likewise, personalities need to click as this will be a day with some hiccups and time management concerns- make sure all of your vendors will support you through your day and not add to the stress.

For some couples, you may need to experience the photographer in action, so consider using your Engagement Photo Session as a trial run. Soham Patel of Soham Photography adds that doing an Engagement Photo Shoot help the photographer to “understand the bride and groom and their personality.” Your photographer is one vendor who is truly going to be with you every step of the way, so the connection you feel with him or her is not one to be taken lightly.

Budget

Budget is always an important consideration for any vendor that you choose. Most photographers agree though, that budget alone should not influence your choice until you have narrowed down your list. Factor in the photographer’s ability to capture stunning images in the style you want. Also, be sure to compare apples to apples; in other words, prices do not always reflect the same time commitment or printing/album choices.

Experience

Photographers with many years of experience have not only fine-tuned their skills, they have also developed relationships with other vendors and are familiar with most venues. Seema Samji of Zamana Lifestyles adds, “Photographers who have been in the game for a while will be more comfortable with the shoot, rather than be overwhelmed with the size and complexity of the Indian weddings!” Being fully prepared also comes with experience as noted by Altaf Khan of Shennai Art Studio. “We don’t want to miss any key moments, so we bring multiple cameras, and use as many as five cameras.”

Wedding Photography Styles

Your chosen photographer should reflect the style you envision for your wedding memories. Traditional or classic photographers will work from a shot list you provide and are more comfortable with formal, posed shots. Photographers who embrace a candid or photojournalistic style are more likely to step back and capture moments as they happen. Some photographers place more emphasis on an artistic or creative style. These images tend to feature unique poses, incorporate different angles and scenery, and focus on details like clothing and décor. Most modern wedding photographers use a blend of styles, so looking through portfolios is an important way of gauging where a photographer’s style falls. Ashok Pancholi of Digital Dream Studio emphasizes the importance of looking at portfolios and asks clients “to really look through past work in detail.” Portfolios will reflect how a photographer maintains their creative and professional integrity while also capturing the shots clients want.

Prepare for Your First Meeting

Once the list of photographers has been narrowed, focus on gathering the right information at each of your meetings. Kimberly Romano of Kimberly Photography reminds couples to approach their first meeting with an “open mind. Come prepared with what you want to know from your photographer. Let us walk you through the process and ask questions, even if you’re unsure about the question.”
In addition to technical questions about the contract, fees, and equipment, here are a few more to keep in mind during the first meeting:

• What style do you specialize in? (Styles discussed in the section above.)
• How would you describe your working style? (Do you want your photographer to orchestrate moments or capture candid shots?)
• Who will be photographing my wedding? (Be sure to meet with not only the owner, but also anyone who will be a part of your team.)
• Have you shot at my venue(s) before? (Understanding the lighting and knowing great spots for photos is a huge advantage.)
• Have you ever worked alongside any of my vendors? (Most wedding vendors develop strong relationships, which makes for seamless flow throughout all your events.)
• Are you shooting in digital or film format or both? (Most photographers shoot digital now, but always good to ask!)
• Can I give you a list of specific shots we would like? (Some photographers prefer to stay true to creativity, while others understand you need some posed photos.)
• How many pictures do you take? (Most photographers take 500 pictures.)
• Will the photos be retouched and color balanced? (Will this be done before you see the proofs?)
• How long after the wedding do we get to see the photos?

In reflecting on the role of a photographer, Amish Thakkar of Fine Art Productions states, “We don’t simply click and process pictures, we preserve the exact emotion you had during your wedding, and pack it into one beautiful remembrance of a wedding portrait.” So as you narrow your choices, consider how your first meetings went. Did you feel at ease with the photographer? Was there a connection, and did he/she understand your expectations? Will your emotions be captured to live on in beautiful portraits? Listening to your own intuition is just as important as considering budget and style.

Making sure everything starts on time, being in front of all your family and friends. Once it’s over, you see the stress go away and couples are in complete love and bliss.

Niulka and Luis (NSPG Media): My favorite moment of a wedding is the reception. It’s like the finale to a fireworks show saving all of the sparkle and excitement until the end!

PGP: My style is editorial, which combines the best of the photojournalism, fashion, beauty, and creative use of lighting. My images are typically suitable for fashion magazine covers and large billboard displays. I not only aim to document an event with my images, but also do it in a way that has emotional impacts. It’s aesthetically beautiful and fashion forward. DV: How do you work with clients to ensure you capture all their desired moments and images while also maintaining your creativity and professional integrity?
PGP: By taking the time to learn about my clients’, their stories, and incorporate them into the photographs. I work with my clients closely on their wedding timeline plan and often consult them on how much time is needed for photography from getting ready, family photos, couple photo shoots in between events, etc.

DV: What has been your favorite wedding moment that stands out to you and why?
PGP: The first time the groom sees the bride on her wedding dress on their wedding day. I’ve photographed over 200 weddings and none of groom’s look was the same.

DV: What suggestions do you have for couples planning their wedding?

PGP: Choose your photographer based on style and images, not budget. Take the time to get to know your photographer and also share your stories with him/her. Share your inspirations and images that you love. Consult your photographer when you put your wedding timeline together.

IF: When walking into my boutique I can guarantee people will be in awe of my collection and my sense of fashion. I pick and choose each and every outfit that I have, and therefore constantly check the quality of fabric and design in each outfit that I have in my boutique.

DV: What has been your favorite wedding moment that stands out to you and why?
IF: Cherishing that moment with all your family and friends! Being the show stopper and the one that awes the crowd – those memories will last a lifetime!

DV: What suggestions do you have for couples planning their wedding?
IF: Invest, Invest, INVEST! I’m a recent bride and I know that every outfit that I have purchased for my wedding I can wear again and enjoy that bride-like moment! Do your best not to make price the only factor of whether you buy an outfit or not, but rather look at the design and work that is going into your outfit. Take the time to research different types of fabrics, etc.

DV: How do you work with clients to ensure their wedding vision comes to life?
PT: I first meet with the couple for a complimentary consultation so we get to know each other, this will be one of the most important days in their lives and I want to ensure a sense of trust and connection. From here we explore and discuss their dreams, vision and expectations. Once I have gathered all the details I match them with the perfect destination property and seamlessly fulfill their vision.

DV: What suggestions do you have for couples planning a destination wedding and/or honeymoon?
PT: Find and work with a professional destination wedding planner who will have vast knowledge of the destination, properties and vendors. And even consider hiring the planner to be on site during the wedding events; language barriers and lack of knowledge can be a real stumbling block. Couple’s shouldn’t have to be worrying about the logistics of the event and whether or not they have chosen a good vendor or if they will even turn up; leave this to the professionals, sit back, relax and enjoy the journey.

DV: What has been your favorite wedding moment that stands out to you and why?
PT: For every wedding it is always the same moment, it is that moment when you look at the couples face and it is lite up with happiness that their dream wedding has come true. It is when the couple and their families come to you, hug you and tell you that they do not have the words to express how grateful they are. It is at that moment that I can affirm that I love what I do and that my passion once again has made a difference in someone else’s life.

Shadman and Farah may have been introduced to one another through mutual friends, but the bond they developed thereafter made them inseparable. One and a half years after they first met, an engagement followed.

With about six months to plan the wedding, Farah decided to manage without a professional consultant. It seemed easy at first, but as the wedding date drew closer, the pace picked up and Shadman and their friends were asked to provide additional help.

The Hilton Atlanta was large enough to accommodate the entire wedding party, and so the venue was the first choice. Celebrations began with the mehndi (rasm-e-henna) ceremony. Decorative lanterns atop tables, colorful tablecloths and shimmering gold, green, purple and pink accents on the canopy and stage added a vibrant splash of glamour.

The wedding ceremony began in the morning and was held at the local mosque. It was a simple, traditional affair, but not without the characteristic beauty of a wedding. Whites and golds in the ensembles, with bold red highlights from floral garlands made for perfect wedding pictures.

At the reception, guests were welcomed to the dazzling sight of gold, red and white. Floral centerpieces, dangling crystals, and ornate pillars made for a grand sight. An elaborate stage, complete with large golden doors and uplights were breathtaking. Handmade programs and a smartphone app allowed all guests to capture and upload their favorite moments truly making the occasion a standout.

He also managed to allow for all poses and moments that Farah explained she wanted. Noorface built tastefully on Farah’s existing beauty, and ensured she was every bit the resplendent bride.

No wedding comes without anxiety and sleeplessness.
